Ok. So gold members get 500Z per month.
You don't get any fun ships when you level up, you don't get costume unlocks, all you get is 500Z, which is a complete robbery considering the monthly price.
You can't do anything with 500Z.
So why should I still be a gold member, when I have to buy all the cool ships as much as the non subs are?
It's time you changed this game a bit.
Lockboxes for non subs, for subs you instead have the contents drop like in any other mmo with subs.
You will get far more subs then.
Convince me.

Can we get some more (canon) KDF outfits, an assortment of respectable skirts/dresses, a long jacket (and more clothes in general) that does plain white well, melee weapon and Mk 15 drops, a T6 Nova, and account-wide lockbox/lobi/promo ships & consoles? Oh, and...
When STO first went F2P it was plain as day that the model expected players to shed their subscriptions and go the free method. The expectation is that players are more willing to part with their money, and more of it when they arent tied to a subscription. And since there is a heavy emphasis on the gambling mechanic to make money. Its hard for PWE to cash in when players are more hesitant to spend when theyve already bought in with the sub. The sub remaining in the game was a simple means to keep the older sub holding players feeling as if they werent completely cheated and to still tap into that demographic that was more resistant to particpating in the gambling mechanic.

Forever a STO Veteran-Minion
That's pretty much the only benefit.
If I make a new character, I go Gold for 1 month. I do that to get the bank unlocks and to get the respec tokens while I level. As soon as I pay for the month, I immediately cancel, there is just no reason to stay gold.
Just remember if you drop from Gold to Silver that the Silver EC cap is 10M and you can't have more then that. When you drop to silver, just purchase the account wide EC Cap unlock and you're good to go.
There is honestly no reason to stay Gold month to month.
If you're gold payer but not a lifetimer, you are probably are doing it wrong.
A pity that no one from the staff took the opportunity to market the Gold Account.
I was hoping to see some good news from that angle.
Unfortunately it can take a long time to earn the rewards. 1,000 days is the max and that gets you the veteran ships.
If you can afford it, buy a lifetime subscription. You'll be a gold member for the life of the game AND you get all veteran rewards up front instead of having to wait 3 years.
Staff generally doesn't get involved with general forum topics. Beyond the argument "well that only encourages a certain kind of user to use the platform to seek attention from authority" there've been a few heated discussions over the last few months which I think may have put a bit of a damper on Cryptic's eagerness to jump in on this forum.
But as a sensible person I could probably play devil's advocate here. What the gold gets you is not just the 500zen stipend but a lot of other account bonuses as well. Account bank, inventory, and personal bank space are definitely the highlights and the respect tokens are also mighty useful to new characters.
But its worth considering that the services are permanent unlocks. Play once on a gold account and boom, a few thousand zen worth of improvements for that character and once your subscription ends you still have the perks on every toon you used.
Basically the way to "go gold" is once then maybe a second time once you've built up a new roster of frequently used alts who need more space. Over the long term, you're better off using the F2P model.

This is about the only reason I've picked up timecards.
I'd wait to see how New Dawn plays out before pulling the trigger on a LTS.

Ima let you in on a secret. They dont need your help. They will willingly take your money not because theyre going to go out of business tomorrow without it. But because youve done such a good job convincing yourself that youre not in need of it and they can have it for very little in return.
And playable Talaxian. Forgot about that too. LoL

1: You don't need any of these fancy Gold-quality XIV stuffs. Purple-quality XII weapons are perfectly good, and you can get those from mission rewards if you know where to look.
2: Any lockbox or Lobi ship can be bought on the Exchange, and this is the smart method of acquiring them anyway. If you follow the path of Dollars → Zen → Keys → Lobi, then the 800 Lobi is the same price as four (4) Lifetime subscriptions. If you simply sell the Keys for EC, and then buy the ship on the Exchange, it is equal to about $20.
3: And for that matter, lockboxes are nothing more than a slot machine. I promise you. YOU WILL dump $100 worth of keys into said slot machine, and you will ONLY get duty officer boxes and mining claims. You would be smarter to let the gambling-addicted people take care of the lockboxes for you, and simply buy the ship with EC.
4: And of course, there is also the simple matter of giving money to people who prefer to make new content, instead of fixing the content that is already in the game. There are locations, like Defera, where the bugs have existed SINCE THE BEGINNING. You read correct. A bug that has existed for 5 YEARS. I don't know how much clearer I can say this. Quit focusing on shiny new stuff, and fix what is already in the game.
5: And then, you have ground maps like Bajor, Andoria, the old Risa, that have no reason to exist. At the very least, Bajor has a mission, but map access needs to be restricted to that mission. And the old Risa, and Andoria, those maps need to simply be deleted.
But the simple fact of the matter remains, you should NEVER use real money in video games. Ever. You already paid the retail price to buy the game in the first place. You should never need to buy the game again, just fly (insert fancy ship).
So, should you remain Gold? In one word, no.

Vet rewards are good in my oppion. Also the Equivalent of $10 a month in my case with 500zen back, is a much easier sell to my wife than buying the big expensive LTS.
Also the often forgotten extra dilithium refinement.
The small periodic cost is easier to manage than the large but ultimately less expensive in the long run cost. But hey, Its good to support a game you like.
Upgrading the more important equipment pieces to Mk XIV (or even just Mk XIII) is reasonable, even for casual free-player scrubs like myself, and doing so makes the game a lot more accessible and enjoyable in the long run.
Sorry, I'm really not a fan of cutting content. It'd be nice if someday, they did something with those maps, but for now, they're fine being relatively useless. Maybe people go there to RP from time to time. Who knows?
No really, don't.
I wish I had that much disposable income to waste! You've spent enough for 3 lifetime subs! And you are still ONE payment away from losing it all!
I bought a lifetime way back when it mattered (aka before F2P) and it 'paid for' itself a few months before F2P happened. So now that 500 Zen a month is gravy for me for the last few years. But I'd not even recommend a LTS today. You'd get more use out of that $300 getting 36,300 Zen (if you buy at bonus time) than you would getting a measly 500 a month. Plus, I'd not bet on STO being around for the 6.05 years it'd take for the LTS to 'pay for' itself if you did it now. 11 yrs is a long time for a game to run and I don't see STO having that type of lifespan considering how PWE is running it now. If it wasn't 'Star Trek' it'd probably not be here now.
