Extreme FPS Lag - No reason?

Hey all. I'm having a FPS issue I cannot figure out. STO is running very poorly all of a sudden, 8fps on maximum gfx settings and between 14 and 20 on minimum. I recently got a new PC which is much better than my old one, the old one could run STO nearly maxed with certain settings on low/off at 40+fps.

What happened:
When I logged in to STO this morning (about 8:30am EST) I got the "Graphics settings have been reset to their recommended defaults." message. I hit OK and readjusted them to my preference. Once I loaded into the game after char select however my FPS instantly fell to unplayable levels. No amount of adjusting gfx settings has a real effect and as far as I can tell there are no programs using up system resources enough to mention.

PC Info:
I would also like to mention that this PC can play games like Space Engineers, 7 Days to Die, and Borderlands TPS on their absolute maximum settings without any issues.

Cybertron PC
OS: Windows 10 Home (10.0.10240 Build 10240)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-78LMT
Processor: AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core @3.8GHz
RAM: 20GB
System Type: 64-bit OS, x64 based processor.
GFX Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti (PNY Overclocked)

I use a Sanyo 720p TV via HDMI and a small VGA monitor as display.
All drivers are up to date. I have current versions of Flash, Java, Dx9, and Dx11.

Any help or advice on this would be awesome. Thanks in advance! ~K

Informational Update:
It seems like the issue might be with certain areas in the game. Specifically the game runs fine (45-80fps depending on amount of traffic and how much is going on) in orbit of Earth. Where as in the Delta Quadrant sector space is 30-50fps, and some systems are a consistent and unplayable 3-8 fps. While I could be wrong, I don't think the issue is with my PC. I booted up Star Citizen Arena Commander and it runs flawlessly. I'm totally at a loss for how to fix this.

Interestingly enough I have a very similar issue to this on Windows 10 Pro. Every so often the FPS just drops for no reason, even in areas that had no lag before with Windows 8.1, so I think it's safe to assume that Windows 10 is the culprit. I've also noticed that Bloom effects never show up either.

I believe I have found the issue. For one, I wasn't aware that certain Delta Quadrant systems lag horribly. Also I disabled the Xbox app's streaming/recording ability for STO. (Windows 10 only) Doing these two things my game returned to a playable FPS in most places. Others still lag for no obvious reason. ESD for example has quite low FPS for as little is actually going on there.

Welcome to Lag-o-Central, the STO edition.

Missions, including the Crystalline Entity mission are unplayable for me right now. The game lags so badly that it's like I'm fighting someone else for my ship control, and have extremely severe rubber-banding.

I also get lots of the evil "Server Not Responding (##:##)" messages, and/or outright booted out of the game. Then, it often takes a long time and/or several tries to get back to the character selection screen. Once I pick my character, it often will log me back out, or take a very long time to get logged in. I also get the "account server timed out" messages.

Whatever gremlins got in with the code, PLEASE fix them! Right now, the game is essentially unplayable for me.

Hey crioijouls, I'm playing on a Win 7 machine here same kinds of problems the last 2 days not exactly happy about the lag as I lost a whole day of crystalline runs because of the complete inability to play.

As I'm using a lowly GTS 250 I found that switching to D3D9ex fixed a lot of the lag for me and didn't seem to make it look noticably worse. The Xbox app in Windows 10 won't record or stream anyway as I don't have the required hardware.

    Following Issue i found:

    Win 7 64bit
If is check on SSAO in STO's GFX-Settings my game are laggy as hell because my GFXCard is a bit too slow for this.

If i check SSAO OFF (!!!!!) in STO all my CPU-Cores getting almost at 100% usage.
I think this cannot be correct.

I think I've resolved the issue for me, it still suffers from FPS drops but not as much, by lowering the Anistropic filtering from 16x to 4x and dropping the amount of lights from 5 to 4. The game still looks the same as before but with drastically reduced FPS drops.

That began with S10. Check by New Romulus and Risa. If you experience massive, inexplicable FPS drops there too, you're affected by a glitch that shipped with Season 10 which effectively killed those maps for some users. The best we can tell is that it has something to do with the vegetation (notice the ESD drop is most significant when the planters are in view.) In some cases disabling high-detail objects helps, but only by getting rid of some of the offending plants (it won't help in every case, depending on just what is being removed.)

Thanks duncan. I shall look into that next time I am able to log into STO. (Bloody Login2-3 issues again.) Though last I tried Risa was a bit low, but definitely bearable.

I have noticed FPS issues all of a sudden as well. As far as I can tell, it has to do with the amount of NPC or NPC activity in the map. In Sol sector, FPS seems fine as there is relatively little NPC activity, but on ESD with all the NPC's walking around, FPS is horrible. likewise, Deep Space Encounters are like watching a slide show until no NPC ships are present. Episodes and PvE's also seem to suffer this issue, while PvP's do not. for me this began a couple of days before the last patch.

Yes, been experiencing this since S10 dropped myself, as I've posted on other similar threads that have popped up since that time. Unfortunately, there's absolutely zero word on any sort of fix coming for this issue. There was something that was supposed to help FPS a while back that went live during the summer event...unfortunately, for most of us it did NOTHING. My actual fear with this issues is that the techs at Cryptic believe it to be fixed, when in fact it is not. My hope is that the continued occurrences of threads on this issue may someday get someone's attention. That and the bug reports that people hopefully are continuing to file.

Maybe we'll be able to go back to these maps someday...

If you have had problems with FPS in the Command Center and on Risa, try playing "The New Link" on Tribble -- I'm getting some effects very similar to what we've had since season 10 dropped. I strongly suspect it's the same thing (especially as the hallmark of my GPU usage dropping and my CPU spiking is apparent), but it's probably best to get verification from some other players.

I can't even boot up the game without it crashing. I've already sent a report regarding the Steam version of the Arc Launchers, and the only remedy I could apply without attempting some technical know-how is to run the game in "Safe" mode, which makes an already seemingly unstable game even worse, despite the fact that it would run.

I'm going to compare the different versions of the game to find any technical issues currently in the game. If anyone wants me to test something while I do this, i.e. experimental remedies, application options, etc., let me know, because I'll be doing every possible test I could think of.

There seems to be a coding problem on their end..I dont know. But from what alot of people are saying, there is a complication with the old PhysX library they use and compatibility with AMD/Radeon builds as well.. I use an AMD 8 core processor and R9 280X vid card and do not get more than 10 FPS on Romulus Command and many other space and ground maps. It is not my system as before season 10 launched I was constant 60 FPS everywhere.

The DEVS will not answer anyone when this is brought up :(
