Who is your favorite 'Trek' composer?

Last week, I attempted to play STO without the built-in music for the first time... instead, opting for a small playlist of Ron Jones' music from "Booby Trap" and "The Best of Both Worlds." And, it was cool! So, it got me thinking... who is your favorite composer? (Yes, you only can pick one!)

    Ron Jones
I'm going to vote for Jones, because his music is so unique.

Goldsmith and Horner are classics, for sure... and I also like Giacchino a lot, but Jones is just so unique.

Oh, dear...this is such a tough contest I can't vote. There are three scores I consider to be the best in Trekdom, in chronological order of release:

    Ron Jones--Best of Both Worlds
    Jerry Goldsmith--First Contact
    Michael Giacchino--Into Darkness

Best of Both Worlds is the best and most memorable score the show ever saw on TV, no contest. We all know exactly how the music sounds at critical moments: "We have engaged the Borg:" "Mr. Worf--FIRE."

Though very different in approach, the First Contact score is also an amazing, creepy accompaniment to the Borg that really contributes to its atmosphere.

Into Darkness...I don't care what you think of the movie. The score is outstanding. "Ode to Harrison," a track that only came out on the limited edition version, would pretty much be my theme music if I could have a personal film score.

Jones. Goldsmith, Giachinno and Horner get honourable mentions, but hands down, Ron Jones was the best composer. He created music specific for the scene. He created the beautiful Romulan theme (oh how I wish we had that continue post season 3. I have a playlist of them on youtube for when I'm playing my Rommie in STO). If I could change 1 thing about TNG, it would be to have Jones continue for the full 7 seasons. Not to take away from the other guys, Chattaway had some fine moments in DS9, but most of the music did become generic once Jones left.

Except for Scorpion. The 8472 battle music was probably the only stand out piece of music from the post Jones era.

If I recall correctly...making the music generic was intentional on the part of the Powers That Be when Ron Jones was dismissed. :(

Although James Horner probably produced the best score with Wrath of Khan, I'm going to a flag up a composer I feel is conspicuously missing from the list:

Cliff Eidelman, who managed to create a suitably ominous and character driven score for Undiscovered Country.

Probably Jerry Goldsmith. The opening theme to First Contact was the definitive Star Trek theme for me on a personal level. It had the familiar pomp and fanfare that started slowly instead of forcing it into my ears which got me hooked, and then the calming melody following it really made me think of the 'exploration' and 'peaceful' aspect of Star Trek (which I know is ironic given what the movie is actually about), but it remains my favorite Star Trek music piece.

I didn't "forget" him... he's just known for one major Trek outing. All the others were used multiple times in Trek history.

Although our wedding party walked to our wedding reception to the theme from Voyager and my wife and I walked in to the TMP opening, Horner is still my favorite.

Indeed it was. Jones was let go because his music was too good, and in the words of Braga (I think it was him, whoever it was that took over from Gene), his music was overpowering the scenes and people were focusing on the music instead of what was happening on the screen. Which is stupid, because it's basically saying he was fired for being too good. Is it any wonder few scenes reached the level of tension in the post Jones era?

I have to go with Jerry Goldsmith. I mean The Next Generation had BY FAR the best theme of all the shows. YES it was just a slightly different version than the " Launch of the Enterprise" theme in Star Trek: TMP but its still AWESOME! James Horner is a VERY close second.

Michael Giacchino. Regardless of what you think of the rebooted movie series, its main theme is a great piece of music, and the score for George Kirk's last stand/Jim Kirk's birth is just beyond description.

Jerry Goldsmith for me. First Contact was what got me into this whole Star Trek thing. Not to mention that First Contact is still the best Star Trek movie of all time for me.

This piece was not actually put in the movie, but it is on the Limited Edition CD for Into Darkness. It's Khan's theme and it REALLY shows (IMO) the difference between this version of the character and the one in the original version. (For me, this one is actually saner than in TWOK and more interesting, despite some missed opportunities Abrams had.)

An incredibly beautiful, moving piece, and this right here is one of the reasons Michael Giacchino is in a triple tie, for me. I re-bought the Into Darkness score when the Limited Edition came out, exactly so I could get my hands on this. I haven't regretted my purchase in the slightest.

I hum the main theme from the new films when I drop out of warp into a mission or queue.

JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Jerry Goldsmith, hearing what would later be the TNG theme playing when the refit Enterprise was unveiled was just breathtaking

I ultimately chose Jerry Goldsmith for his iconic TMP/TNG fanfare, but Michael Giacchino is a close second.

      Other: Sol Kaplan.

TOS generally had great music to accompany the drama (or humor) of every scene. The Doomsday Machine music in particular was just superbly done.

Went for Horner, but it's a very tough call in general on Trek music. Something just seems to inspire Trek composers.
