i guess i'm still a bit new...and don't quite get what fleets are about. it seems there may be a few things i eventually may need/want to buy from fleet. however, i'm currently a more casual player right now and I like the story line missions and variety of other missions i can find.
so, how do i decide on what fleet to join? thanks.
For the most part, fleets are groups of players who join together for various reasons. From wanting to do group content together, to just chatting while they play. Every fleet is different, some fleets are only for doing high level content, others are only for helping new players. Like Capt said, you should look for a Fleet that has people who you think you would like. if you're lucky it will also be a decent sized fleet that has everything unlocked, but with the new Armada system it should be a little easier to get fleet gear when you need it.
Finding the right fleet for you isnt easy, unless you join a fleet just for the gear access, its going to be hard finding one you'll like since there are so many out there and since you cant get an accurate feel for it unless you join. The only fleet I can talk about is UFP since they're the only fleet I've been in (and still exists.) They're a pretty large fleet with a variety of people, but most are really nice and helpful. Its not a bad fleet to join for a new player, plenty of people who wouldn't mind helping you out and there are no requirements to join. Even if you just want to join for a little while to see what a fleet is about, no one will mind if you join just until you find a fleet thats right for you.

Anyone want to give me a Temporal Heavy Dreadnought pack? I'll be your friend
Thanks for the input...hope I figure this out. a couple of comments of 'group content' - what is that? 'high level content' ? I hear/read about role play...what is it (by example is it) in the context of this game?
Group content at high levels is stuff like team battles vs -insert enemy name here- in space and on the ground with more difficult enemies and special objectives.
Sometimes a certain strategy or actions may be required to complete on higher difficulties
(such as killing alarm bugs and keeping Vanderver alive in Bug Hunt Elite, and Correctly identifying all suspects in Undine infiltration)
Either a debuffing ship or a lot of damage is reccomended for battle of korfez, especially that last boss.
Roleplaying has a pretty similar definition everywhere I think-
its basically a game of lets pretend I'm my character what would I do?
"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."
The right people. Most of the gear can be had from the big fleets granting access anyway, so just being with a good bunch of people is plenty good enough.
You look in a fleet for what you want, if your a lone wolf you look for a fleet were they leave you alone but are there when you need advice or help. If you like RP then look for that. There are so many fleet that you can find a fleet that gives you what you want from a fleet.
Good fleets can help you with advice, game-play, ship-building & after a time friends to play with.
They can tell you how STF's work and help you.
Bad fleets are that tells you how to play, how much you must play/donate.
If they set rules you don't like, its time to look for a other fleet.
Nice people who don't think dps is everything and won't yell at you for "Dragging them down" for doing less dps than they think is "enough" even when said STF was around 5 seconds long and you won.

The story line missions will last you for a couple of months.. nothing more. You should keep that in mind.
