Suggestion: Support mode for Science Ships.

Hey,

I was thinking it might be interesting if an actual support mode was added to the game for science ships. The mode would take the science ship's weapons offline and apply a group wide accuracy buff and add a chance for all team members weapons to penetrate their target's shields. Both the accuracy buff and penetration chance scale with the science ship's aux power.

Additionally the science ship would be able to use a stacking persistent buff similar to sensor analysis that raises the energy damage output of the friendly target receiving the buff by a set % with a scaling modifier based on the amount of power the science ship's weapons were previously receiving. Base % + small bonus, for balance sake.

The science ship can continue to deal damage or perform support tasks using its aux power.

The idea is for the purpose of promoting other styles of game play, such as support with out compromising the damage requirements in the harder STFs.

Edit:

Just to add a few extra thoughts to this suggestion.

Support mode focus: When a science ship enters support mode,it can focus on exotic particle damage or healing abilities.

Exotic particle focus increases the duration or effect of exotic particle damage abilities. Rifts gain an increased duration, other abilities just gain an extra damage tick that deals comparable damage to the extended rift duration. Your exotic particle abilities will also have a small chance to penetrate the target's shield's. If your ability cannot penetrate a target's shields, it will do extra damage to those shields.

Healing focus reduces the cooldown on healing abilities by 10 seconds and the shared system CD by 5 seconds. Shield heals also add a % change to reflect damage back at targets for several seconds, and hull healing abilities will gain an additional heal that increases hull damage resistance for several seconds.

Capacitors: as your ship continues to function in focused support mode, residual energy is stored after an ability is used. This energy can be consumed at any level of charge.

Healing focus science ships gain a bouncing chain shield and hull heal. The bounce range, healing % and number of targets heals as the charge increases.

Exotic damage focused science ships gain a super rift that drains shields and power levels, holds hostile targets and deals a large amount of penetrating damage. (Exotic damage bypasses shields)

Both capacitor abilities have a very slow build up.

Obviously balance is important so adjustments might be necessary. Not trying to make science ships the gods of anything. If anything should be cut from this suggestion, I'd say the capacitors could easily go. The focused mode could also undergo changes if needed.

I think the idea has merit. It would bring back the idea of team play and place scis as a valuable team member again. I am all for support modes like that.

I support this idea ... or any idea that helps make sci characters and sci ships more compelling.

As long as STO remains in its current state my sci characters and sci ships only come out to play when I get bored. Players should have more reasons to WANT to play science characters and ships ... other than boredom.
In the immortal words of Captain Sisko: "It may not be what you believe, but that doesn't make it wrong."

Don't believe the lies in this forum. I am NOT an ARC user. I play STO on Steam or not at all.

Still I really like the idea. One of my Sci might find it useful but I do know one of my sci will probably never use it if it offlines weapons. :/

We don't want what the Feds have. We want the equivalent. We want fairer treatment. Concern, desire, greed to some extent, and passionate belief that the enough people would buy KDF items to make it worth Cryptic's while.
