Even then I wouldn't necessarily try to put the full blame on Cogentco. The bottlenecking is due, at least in part, to how the OTHER ISPs treat Cogentco.

Given that the issue is with Congentco overstepping settlement-free peering agreements..... Yes, I put the full blame on Congentco..... because that is where the blame in fact all is.

I mean, one or two; yeah, maybe some blame to spread around. But when pretty much every other peering company on the planet has the same issue with you it gets pretty clear where the problem is.

So why is Borticus currently working through a long list of fixes that both he and Salami have stated is contributing to the lag?

I was talking about ongoing peering issues with Congentco. Not saying the lag we are seeing now is solely Congentco.

From my experience the lag is not just from one source in the game , if it was just a ISP issue , your lag in game would be consistent to every aspect of the game , but from my experience its not , its certain areas of content that seem to be effected from my experiences .even the devs have come forth to say that certain in game abilities are causing server spikes which effects us players in the form of lag . which there providing fixes for .
the best we can do is give as much info when writing out tickets , does you lag only happen in certain maps , or everywhere , or worse getting the random Dc'd .
i will say that this game doesnt meet its Min requirements which is obvious . hell the game has issues with state of the art Equipment , those in the middle seem to be the most stable but with each new feature more and more players state the have issues as that min req bar raises . IMO.

It took me 10 minutes from the time I started the launcher until I got in game.

4 minutes to load the launcher.

Another 3 minutes to load my characters.
    Another minute for my ship.
And then another 2 minute to load a map.

    This is completely unacceptable.

Yeah, it's getting REALLY bad right now, and until recently I haven't had much trouble with lag. :(

Just to make sure, which address should I do a tracert on?

I'm having problems with the launcher sitting at loading for several minutes. Then when it's done, gibberish.

The problem seems to be that different users have very different experiences. Some experience severe lag which is not on their part (i. e. no outdated hardware, no 18th century dial up connection). Others don't experience it. Occasional (but only very rare) hiccups notwithstanding, I haven't had real problems. I used to have one really bad in the Undine space queue, but since I updated my system (not because of that and I am still not running anything remotely "high end") this is gone. I never had any troubles in fleet defence or other STFs mentioned here.

That is not to say that these problems don't exist. And this is not to say that these problems shouldn't be resolved for those affected. But it is not as clear cut as some seem to think it is. And maybe a different provider would only shift the problem to other players, not eliminate it.

delta sector is the worst..ground so.so,space is pure horror...

I really thinking of unistalling this game, this game is gone to hell,1 year ago.i im St fan but this is pew,pew game, with bad coding, lag spikes...and so on,and on..i have 6 ships or more i dont even fly ,new ships..i dont care about the money, but more and more this seems like a waste of time. One day game is lag free then 4 or 5 days game is unplayable..new season guys i really cant care less..Armadas..yeah you need armadas becouse people running away from this game so nice try,but if you dont fix the gameplay, all this is for nothing..this game is more then 5 years old is not a fail, but now is just one mediocre space game with Star trek label ,nothing more...

yeah i think game is broken beyond repair, ships are not content, chasing dps is stupid like overclocking your video card for 5 % more fps, same thing...

Give players planet to land on,give us story, give us real war,not this iconian misery..
Many mi friend ,long time friend left, for all this reasons, these are not people who came yesterday into this game ,real star trek fanatics, but dps star trek and engine who cant take all this spawning and damage ,are you serious cryptic.

i really like to belive with 10.5 season all this problem will be gone ,but to long you keep as around with empty promises and nothing is really happening.

to new players, game is good not great like before if you can take the lag spikes,dc and other bad stuff.give this game a try.

    cheers..

    Can I haz yer stuff?

I rarely, and I mean very rarely suffer from lag, even on my 5 year old laptop and the fact I'm in the UK. I do get a bit of graphic stalling, which is down to my laptop trying to process more than it can handle (CCA and Borg Disc especially), but other than that, I found that reducing my graphics settings helped greatly. It must be said that what alot of people think is server lag is, in fact, graphics stalling (FPS) that is caused because they have their settings wrong. The game still looks great, even on lower settings. If you're rubber-banding or have UI lag, then that is most certainly an network issue, be it at Cryptic's end, your end or somewhere in between.

On a serious note, I have had lag since the Anniversary event back in March. That lag persisted despite the many "fixes".

Now, on a side note, let us recall how Salami Inferno stated that the lag is a 3 part issue. This did not mean they fix 3 things and done. As a result of them looking and searching they found multiple areas that is causing lag for people. There was a set of issues where some cases it was reducing the FPS of instances. Another where a set of issues was causing skills to literally bog down the servers due to what they were doing and how much they were doing it. And the the last was an admitted network and ping issues. If I recall that is.

They've fixed some FPS issues being caused, still some more left I'd wager.

They've fixed a slew of skills, traits and other things that caused issues. Still metric tons to do yet I'd wage. Some they can do something with, others they can't do squat about. This might require replacing things and deleting the broken code completely to fix...

They've upgraded some of their networking gear. There's still a lot more to do here I'd wage.

I can look at a series of traceroutes I did back to back and guess what occurs. A very solid pattern.

Now, it has been accused before, but before you want to accuse my desktop or network issue of being the issue let me assure you that it isn't. Not unless a i7-5820k with 32gb of RAM PCIE SSD (Phoenix blade), and 2x 980GTX SLI graphics cards falls under the minimum requirements for the game. Or if a 60/15 Business class cable is to blame.

I should point out for comparison, that the lag I see is when I run my top maxed out captain decked out with all the goodies and gold. Almost anything I can do with him I see moments of lag.

Now, I switch to a lesser captain, one with pre-DR items. That lag, all but disappears. If there is any in anything I do, it's acceptable hard to see. The only problem I have these days, is most people running DPS builds don't normally want to do enough testing to remove skills, traits, and other setups to switch to a almost virgin Pr-DR build setup. I managed to get some in the early lag days (march-april ish time), and there was a noticeable difference.

Currently lag is not universal. Some may see it build up until it's unbearable. Others may never see it. But it is there, and it is common among certain groups, or under certain conditions. You cannot convince me that it coincidence that a 20 man SB24 can become so laggy with the right setups with all 20 members declaring the lag they see is just one person. While doing the same run with a different type of setup yields a playable instance. There's multiple fronts still. And they need to be addressed.

I have to agree with you, I have not had to deal with Lag (some minor rubberbanding here and their) for a very long while. It kind of makes me wonder if players who are dealing with lag have discussed it help find commonality with their issues. (For example, players in one region all have dial-up, or DSL).

I had a one time rubber band on ESD a few days ago last time I was online but other than that it's been fine mostly.

It's funny how cryptic seemingly sees a game like SWTOR still make a profit after being severely buggy, laggy and unstable and now suddenly so is STO. Granted this game's troubleshooting, etc. hasn't always been perfect, but until recently it has been far more stable and less buggy. It's as if now they realize they can make money peddling clunky junk so they are.

And they even get the dev-wife support of the snotty "it's your puter derp. game good for me derp" crowd like SWTOR.

    Trace complete.

Hop 4 has been a consistent "Request timed out" for over a week, but its not caused me a great deal of issues unless I'm some where like the Voth/Undine battle zone After some digging and prodding of my ISP (virgin media) they've admitted there's a fault in that area with their infrastructure and i quote "should have it repaired by the 24th July 2015"
The timed out request at hop 15 has only been happening for the last few days and has you can see its right before it hits Cryptics servers. So it may simply be something outside of Cryptics control.
Oh, it's not broken? We can soon fix that!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed at the moment and hope that that the latency will end tomorrow when the pre-patching is no more.

This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

Well, last night I was in a gateway to Qo'nos. Lag got so bad nobody even knew what they hell we were doing, with all the jumping around. EVERYONE on the team experienced it, EVERYONE on the team commented about it in chat.

Later - In the cure found, same thing, again, with whole team commenting about it in chat.

I was disconnected several times that/last night, and experienced log in problems, plus severe lag in social zones like ESD.

I hadn't experienced a lot of lag since the "fix", but I'm gonna be "that guy" and throw it back at Cryptic, it's been well documented in posted YOUTUBE videos that lots of people have been experiencing lag en mass in STFs and social zones:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3WuWM0so58 - I love this one :D

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Heaj3omW9U

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSO3ykfsSuM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWc2s5uYhoI

I could go on and on and on.
I can't believe we all are experiencing ISP problems, or using inferior rigs.

Lol... tomorrow the lag will be epic, and you know, "big" updates will make the game unplayable for the entire day, it always happens. And the lag has nothing to do with the pre-patch btw. Most of us ended the prepatch days ago anyways. And everytime they add more content , they lag will be increasing. That is a fact, unfortunately. So, crosse your fingers.. but maybe you should just put a hat.

I was playing through the U.S. proxy and getting nonstop SNR and rubberbanding, multi minute load times for maps, and overall possibly some of the worst lag I've seen.

I switched to be EU proxy and while my ping went to 250-300, the rubberbanding, SNRs, and general cogent fukkery vanished.

Cryptic please replace cogent. I shouldn't have to reroute myself from the Pacific Northwest to Europe and back in order to play the game.

I don't care what it takes but your American customers are getting fed the f up. Fix it.

KSA, Severe lag and rubber banding, almost unplayable

Just came from one of these myself. Was getting close to smashing my keyboard. Figured I better just log off.

    From tomorrows patch notes:
Reduced the server performance impact of several additional types of powers.

    Here's hoping.

    I doubt it.

I'm at the point that I am waiting for an overall meltdown of all Cryptic games going through Cogent. It will ever get so bad that they spend solid days without quit fixing, or they start shutting down.

It is almost at a point where I am ready to start paying a subscription to another game instead of pumping money, into a game I love that I can't play more than a few minutes before lag and SNRs come up.

For me, the lag has been consistent and non-stop since the anniversary event. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but there was something for sure that occurred back then that started it off for me in mass. The first few lag fixes I hoped to see a reduction. In some cases it was noticeable. In most cases however, it seemed to make things worse or change nothing. I have lost faith in seeing some fix in lag that will make the game playable for me.

I hope though that something "clicks" and suddenly I'm able to play through a full week without seeing any lag or rubber banding in any time that I played, to see my skills go through on the first time I click on them, and see everything working without issue. If only for a week, I'd be grateful for that alone and then lag could resume and I would be happy to wait another "X" period of time for another full week of unbroken lagfree play time.
