Probably not useful at all. For one thing, he was an admiral in Star Wars, which was a long time ago, in a galaxy far away. for another, he would not know Starfleet/Romulan/Klingon tech at all so would not be able to command effectivly.

If he was familiar with the tech and the tactics, Thrawn might be a pain in the butt for the Iconians. But he would still need to study Iconian art.

Going by the skirmish war we have. I say he would kick butt and ready to move on. This is not a war at all.

Eh... style of war asside... we're only seeing what our characters are involved in. Not every battle going on. And I wouldn't call the fiasco in Tau Dewa with the Heralds a skirmish. That was a full on Blitzkrieg.

Well first he'd need to familiarize himself with his foes . But then again after reading the Blogs and watching a few hours worth of silent movies of the Heralds, I'm sure he'd go "this is it ???" But then again , that's what you get when your foes are caricatures of villainy.

This. I'm reminded of Mara Jade's speech to Exar Kun in I, Jedi by Michael Stackpole:
MARA JADE: Is that the best you've got? Babies crying and ghosts whispering lies from beyond the grave? The Dark Lord of the Sith I knew would have been ashamed to use such tactics.
EXAR KUN: What? Who dares?
MARA JADE: Who cares, more correctly. Horn here was worked over by the Empire's best and never broke. Isard would've had you digitized, analyzed, and discarded without a second thought, and she wasn't even Force-sensitive. Darth Vader would've found you amusingly quaint, and the Emperor... well... The Emperor succeeded in destroying the Jedi, so he'd see you as the very definition of failure!
I'll take a Skrain Dukat or a Weyoun, or an Admiral Leyton, over any ten of Cryptic's villains.
