Yet another doom thread. Seriously, I know it's the weekend but between this and few other questionable threads I'm seeing are the Mods on a break or something?
After reading through the post, I think you might have asked the wrong question. It feels more like you want to know "What is most concerning you about STO?" or "Why did you quit spending money?"
That I can answer. It's not really one thing, more a collection of things:
1. Too many buckets to fill, with far too much required to fill them compared to what you earn. Specializations, fleet credits/projects, even some of the specialty ships just seem so far out of reach or dependent entirely on chance that I don't really bother with them. If a D'kora falls into my lap, or I get a new spec point from duty officers, great, but I'm not really going to strive for it.
2. Similarly, "costs" are much too high compared to the value I see in them.
3. Unclear/Unappealing rewards - I have to put the effort/resources into unlocking a ship, weapon, trait, etc. to experiment with before I can really tell if it's something I'll want to keep. In that case, I'd rather simply not spend anything - time, cash, dilithium, ec, whatever - until something comes along I'm sure I want, especially given the "costs".
4. The queue changes (which are hopefully finally reverting).
5. Uninteresting/Hostile player community, with some notable exceptions.
6. Poor quality control. The more bugs, typos, server crashes, etc. there are, the less confidence I have in the company itself.
7. Lack of customer service.
8. Obsoletion, for lack of a better term. The Sheshar, the Jem'Hadar Attack/Strike ship, the T6 Intrepid right after T5U, and so on. None of those personally affected me since I never went for any of them, but seeing the lack of concern for preserving the value of expensive items left me with a trepidation to ever spend much on anything.
9. Oversaturation of one offs. I can only use so many kit modules, or slot so many traits.
10. General disagreement with the ship design system - bridge officer and console slots set arbitrarily. I'd be more amenable to something like Endless Space or Galactic Civilizations where ship contents are limited by hull capacity, maybe with Officer powers dependent on ship power levels or equipment instead - something more meaningful and configurable than static "chairs."
11. Finally, it just doesn't really feel like Star Trek. Except for the ship designs and some names, to me it feels like a generic, somewhat dated space shooter. Good enough for braindead kill time, but not really something worth investing heavily in.
Ok, I'll bite. It's a doom thread because of the implication: trying to "prove" through skewed questions on straw poll that players are leaving/have left the game "in droves" (the usually rallying cry of the doomsayers.) It's more subtle than most, I'll give it that. But the implication is clear and the result pointless.
I think it's a case you're bringing more doom to the thread than the OP did.
I mean, seriously, think about what you said there, eh?
"It's a doom thread because of the implication: trying to "prove" through skewed questions on straw poll that players are leaving/have left the game "in droves" (the usually rallying cry of the doomsayers.)"
I was merely curious, seeing a massive decline in players in this game a few months after LoR, and continuing to be miserable, i was wanting to ask what made you, or your friends, or other relatives to stop playing this game?
Edit: This poll is mainly aimed towards longer-term players, and the 3 options are reasonably generic, i am sure most individual reasons fall under one of the categories in one way or another
What made you, or one of your close relatives/friends to leave STO?
A) Game heading into the wrong direction by poor Developer decisions. Too much grind, no longer able to find the time to progress/finish Reputation, R&D, Specialization points, etc.
C) Lag, Crashes, Bugs
So let's take a look, eh? Trying to prove that players are leaving in droves? Where? He said since a few months after LoR he's seen a massive decline in the players in the game. Where is that saying that folks are leaving in droves? He's seen a massive decline. Given who he is...who he played with...what he mainly played...that's a simple fact. There has been a massive decline in the folks he would have seen in game. Does that mean that he's seen tens of thousands of folks leave and more? Hundreds of thousands? The game is empty? Nope, cause he didn't say any of that. You brought that to the thread...not him.
A skewered poll? Outside of him not providing enough options to cover all the reasons folks have left the game, with his believing those three general enough to cover everything, just how exactly is a poll on why somebody left skewered there? Is it because it's just about folks that have left? He didn't do a poll on why people have stuck around? Just what are you bringing to the thread there...that he didn't?
* * * * *
Almost everybody on my Friend List had left the game by January 29th. The majority of them were still there at the end of November/start of December. I didn't have thousands or tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of folks on my Friend List. I had two folks that routinely still showed up after January 29th...two folks that I added after January 29th. Hell, one of them I didn't accept the invite until sometime in May.
There was a time when it was extremely rare that I would post in General Discussion and I wouldn't go anywhere near Ten Forward. I was a posting machine in Builds, PvP, Bug Reports, Tribble, Redshirt, discussing mechanics and the like. Almost everybody I discussed that stuff with...they left. I spent so much time discussing that stuff, that it worked its way into my gameplay, so when those folks left...well, I ended up posting in threads that I would never have touched...getting in arguments that I would never have gotten into...cause almost everybody I normally talked to had left.
In the game, the folks that I'd normally run into with certain queues or instances...yep, the vast majority of them left too. So next thing I knew, I'm off flying around in circles doing PvE.
And it all pretty much ties into the timeframe MT gave there in his OP...a few months after LoR, and almost everybody I had dealt with up to that point was heading out.
Doom and gloom? Nope, just a case that they left. There are still plenty of players around...just not the kind of players that I'm generally going to associate with...there's just not much in common with them in the least.
I saw my own massive decline there...all sorts of folks that would always be around, just no longer around. Does that mean I think the game's doomed? Is anything I said there suggesting the game is doomed?
How's what I said any different than what the OP said, eh?
Like some others mentioned, he definitely could have included a few more options for why folks have left - could have had the other, could have had multiple choice, etc, etc, etc...but that's about the only thing off about what he did there.
The rest? That's your baggage that you're bringing to the thread...
...if you can't tell the difference between a thread like this and a doom thread, I'm guessing you're expecting your CDF calendar, coffee mug, and mousepad in the mail any day now. I mean, there was the perfect example of a /facepalm doom thread created by another poster that you had replied to before replying here. How much of that did you bring here without bothering to think about what was being said here?
I'd have marked "all of the above" if u had put that choice in as well.
Just to add started last year with 7 peeps with 4 more interested to start. I'm the only one playing now.
Fleet I belong two atleast 56 active members ... Now down to 3!!!
Although I returned to the game with the delta recruitment event I did leave at the start of the year for a few months because I wasn't happy with the direction the game was going under d'Angelo as EP.
The DR event was a step in the right direction. Equal ship release for factions is another. Yes even if it's battlecruiser centric for KDF at least it's something. Account-wide unlocks for event reward ships is another thing.
I'm a lot happier with this game in recent months than I was with ~12 months d'Angelo was running things into the ground.

Well my friends are gone. Why? No clue, I just started playing again and they left while I was gone. I was one of them hardcore pvp types, I've come back as a pve hero because no longer caring about how things will effect pvp means I can try to enjoy the game for what it is and not bash my head into a wall. So while for the short-term I am playing again I can say everyone I have ever played this game with is not.
I don't think what I said above is a "doom" type of thing more of a, it sucks not having the old guys to play with and enjoy the game with type of thing. shrug
my brother once played sto like swtor, in both case he lost interest in both games fairly quickly and trying to get an answer out of him, at least an honest one is like watching the great wall of china and expecting it to fall and it never does.. so whatever his reasons are, damned if i know.
i dont have any friends in real life or on the game, a waste of time. so thats dead.
as for myself, i come and play once in a while like swtor, when i feel like it. but leaving sto? if i leave sto it will be for good but i intend to be around on this like swtor until the servers shut down.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
Of course you really have no idea about the current number of players, but go ahead and poll away.
DOOM!
Do you? Does anyone?
Or can you infer from your friends, Friends List, and the state of the nearly empty public queues?
What about when numerous people post things about their fleets being empty? Or are we just to go blindly on, assuming everything is hunky dory, what we're seeing is a "display" or "reporting bug", and that STO is "not only healthy, but growing" because "Delta Rising is the best expansion ever, and the players love it!"
I'd say the STF fix is no less than 6 months too late though.
I just want to know why it took so long to "fix" (it wasn't broken before DR). It was nearly unanimously hated on during it's testing period and they received loads of feedback before the changes went live and after they went live about how terrible of a design change it was. But they kept trucking on for 6 months, as if all was well. Why?
My cousin who introduced me on the game left, but that was right after F2P came out. It was not about the game, it was his job got too demanding. He couldn't never get time to play.
My other couple friends are still hanging around. My other Fleet mates are still around I talk to some.

Translation: The OP has an agenda and doesn't want to give people any chance of giving any results that don't support his agenda or worse show that the agenda he's pushing only represents a minority of the player base.
Furthermore most people that quit just leave. They don't hang around trolling forums of games they stopped playing.
An agena, out of that? Really?
If you've come to the forums to complain about the AFK system, it's known to be bugged at the moment.
Where is the "PvP was left abandoned" option? That's why I left STO for a while.
Initially i wanted to add that option, but then it would only be fair to add PvE as well.
You know how it goez, talk about PvP is like asking for hate here. This thread wouldve already been nuked by mentioning PvP. And yes people, i wouldve have voted pvp as well. I restrained myself from explicitly adding this option, even if its the thing i liked most about this game, so much for having 'an agenda' in regards to this poll haha,
But yeah i remember you used to Pee Vee Pee we probably bumped into each other years ago :P
Good timez, thx for the votes all, planning to send this directly to the head of PWE and to set something in motion
:P
