R&D: Any point of going above lv 15?

Is there any reason to go above lv 15, such as able to get Mk 13/14 360 Beam Array?

You get another +10 crafting skill per level increasing the chance to crit. And at level 20. is accolade if you are into accolade collecting.

So I will not get a Mk 13 or Mk 14 360 beam array by going higher level?

You know how, say you craft Upgrade kits, every time you're actually counting on getting 2, it makes 1? The increase in skill reduces those chances.

Also...don't rule out them adding craft items at level 20 at some point in the future.
May as well keep the R&D going until you're finished.
You wouldn't want to be disapointed in the future if they do infact add lvl 20 craftable items at some point.
Word has it they're working on improvements for the crafting system...so better to play it safe, then be sorry...right ?

I won't lie, when they introduced the change to let us "triple up" R&D research on a school, I thought it was going to coincide with the release of some item that required R&D level 20. So I've reluctantly gotten back to everyone leveling their R&D, just so that if it happens I'm better prepared.

Exactly. May as well keep going with it. Just in case.

since R&D materials are cheap to get and since you need 2 minutes a day to start R&D projects i dont see why you wouldnt go to level 20. im at level 18 now so about 3/4 to level 20.

Crafting the level 15 specials it can increase chance and also when fabricating upgrade tech more chance of 2 instead of 1. But anything else such as trying to craft beams with mods you want ect. Just keep walking.:mad:

True. The XP projects are so cheap (1 white material), the only rational reason not to go for level 20 would be being too lazy to start the daily projects.

This.... nothing wrong with maxing out, and it increasing the values to crit on projects (which can result in doubling things such as number of upgrade kits). My Fed Eng is at lvl 15+ in all schools, and lvl20 in beams.

It's only worth going over 15 if you're interested in mass-crafting tech upgrades, especially experimental tech upgrades, or if you have the necessary doff(s) and are interested in mass-crafting the gear unique to each R&D school (wide angle DHCs, omni beams, etc).

15 gets you the captain trait. Using a purple doff, you can hit 100% chance to craft VR Mk IIs at around 13.

Not wanting to lock out your crafting slots, actually.

Because if you're leveling crafting schools, you're not crafting something else.
If you didn't use dil to fast track a school when it first came out, you missed the real money.
On this, I would ignore Druk. Unless you're already space rich, there's still EC to be made. I'd suggest producing something consistent, such as tech upgrades, instead of going for the grand prize of [CrtD]x2 [Pen].

I play a little game called "How fast can I slot my projects."
Its reeeee-eal hard to calm down after that 5 sec dash. Not knowing what project ill get, makes it all the more exhilarating. *wipes brow*

Should be a mini game all it owns... I mean, we all love mini games right ? :D

If Lv20 R&D items do come, I expect raging fools to demand that it's unfair for those to require Lv20 for that particular school.

Once I made it to level 15 in all schools, I started running 3 research projects in one school each day, leaving me 2 slots to craft with. I'm not grinding out items but occasionally I do need/want to craft things, usually upgrade kits, and leaving myself 2 open slots is more than enough for that purpose.

Not really unless you have nothing else to do in your R&D.

Took so damn long to get just one char to 15, I doubt I will do any others or continue on. I can craft what I need now, so anything beyond level 15 is just another time sink. If I plan on leaving my account to my heirs, they may finish out the levels one day in the far future.

Components are cheaper at level 20 due to more crit chance.

Takes less than 30 seconds each day I log into a given character to set some rnd research. It is a grand total of 20 mouse clicks (open doffs, go to rnd, collect 5, school, scroll, set, confirm, repeat last two four times, close doffs), less if you don't have all 5 research slots unlocked yet.

In exchange for those 30 seconds I get some very nice space combat traits. Works for me. Your mileage may vary.

You're right. My mileage did vary. But there is no reason to be all snotty about it. I am delighted you spent 30 seconds per day and about twenty or so mouse clicks to achieve this stupendous event which is unparallelled in all of Human history.

I am completely unsurprised you know those numbers so very precisely.

I do not know the exact number of mouse clicks nor the amount of time per day it took me to achieve level 15 in all areas. Nor do I care. I do know it seemed to take longer than it should have. I do not want to be handed stuff after one click, but as with the XP fiasco, the Devs realized they clamped down a bit harder than they should have. The "generous" allowance of being able to slot three research projects instead of just one meant I got where I wanted. Eventually.

As with a lot of things in this game lately, the achievement did not live up to the hype surrounding it.

Sorry you took that harshly, I was not intending to be snarky. I know the screens well so replayed it in my mind for my own curiosity and offered the information in case anyone felt it was informative.

Again, if you took it poorly I do apologize such was not my intent.

No real biggie, gavinruneblade. Apology accepted.

Let me apologize to you as well.

I had a perfectly awful day at work. I am half in the bag as well and I already know I am a mean drunk. Which are not excuses but explanations.

Only minor benefits wait at 20 and are a matter of perspective. No MK 13/14 stuff.

    You get:

    - an accolade for each school
    - a slightly higher chance for better outcome of crafting projects

    You have to invest:

    - patience cuz it takes incredibly long to get there
    - not much else because a daily project is launched in 3 seconds and cost nothing

I went there on all my alts and most of them have reached 3-4 different schools at a level of 20. I only make use of it when it comes to generating upgrades. In 99% of all cases I get 2 upgrades out of each project as result.

In any case the upgrade system is a joke under consideration of the time gate because there is nothing to do there basically. Much of it is just a lottery you can already play at lower levels.

My recommendation to Cryptic is make use of it in a fashion that a lvl 20 school grants you the permission to generate all kinds of weapons up to 14 BUT with completely selectable modifiers. If this costs additional Dil then so be it. Peeps could decide for themselves if they rather pay Dil for that or play lotto.

So true; new R&D (season 9.5) started what, just over a year ago? It took me that long w/o clicking "finish now" ever, to get 2 schools to 20 (beam/cannon), torpedoes to 17, eng & ground to 16 and sci to 15.

If lvl 20 stuff/items do come out, anyone who complains about it (i.e. because they the complainees are'nt even close to having any school at lvl 20) only have themselves to blame if they never bothered to level the crafting system.

Exactly what I do. leveling the crafting schools w/o spending 17k dil is easier than making ec from vendor trash - lol
