Just fix the freaking flag thing at the end, either make what you have actually work, or change the program to see the position you finish in and award you your place. This BS of missing the flag from Lag, Discoballs, people standing around the flags to make you miss and all the other TRIBBLE is making many HOMOCIDLE..... Fix It stop being A Holes:cool:
That flag system (having to klick the flag after crossing the finish line) is a real fun killer and makes the race pretty pointless.
This. Instead they should just make it into a real finish line race. Where you just have to cross it at 1st, 2nd or 3rd place to get the rewards for it. This click and grab the flag system is just not working. There are idiot trolls who are standing behind the flag and when you come storming at it, they quickly grab it. You overshoot it and have to turn around for a chance to go for 2nd or 3rd. But before you can grab it, others already have. Also there's a bug that prevents the finish button from showing up. Resulting in getting a DNF on your name.
ive only problem I had was I was closly following the 1st place person and as soon as I got clost to the flas I stepped off the gas and hit f......ant picked up the fist place reward cause the person in front of me skidded passed the flag and I didn't notice...I felt bad.
Last year I only did the race a few times just for fun. I doubt I will do it this year unless something to be part of. I know I will never win it. But the RPing factor helps.
I won't be at the event for long like last year. Since I'm only after a few items.

In the spirit of fair play i am going to share some tips on how to win at this:
1st: before the race starts, find an instance with low player count, not everyone races and you can find youself running it alone.
2nd: Run the races at odd hours of the day, my local time of 2 to 3 am i can run it twice with no one else.
3rd: get yourself a lolnut Tribble and spam it during the race, it gives you a speed boost.
4th: when you are behind the island, aim for thr route closer to the shore, it is quicker and place you infront of everyone else when the tracks join back together.
Lastly, i personally cannot confirm this, but if you have activated your frosted boots while using your board, you will be much more stable and 5 times faster.

Just finished a race, and I can say I'm still unhappy with the race. Moreso now, actually.
#1. My Federation board just got outclassed with the Targ board, spent 1500 favors last year for the fastest board which is now not the fastest, but is still the most expensive. (or tied for most expensive at least) Oh, worth noting, I actually timed my acceleration at the start perfectly so I came out noticably ahead of everyone, but those targ board riders quickly narrowed the gap, and eventually sped right on by me.
#2. The wavering back and forth makes hitting those speed boost panels a pain in the can, lined one up perfectly, board wavered and I missed it.
#3. That $&#% flag grabbing at the end, hopped off of the board just prior to the flag (3rd place, unfortunately cursed targ boards), someone zipped up still on a board and I had to walk over and grab the 'participant' prize.
I'm not going to complain about losing, I expected not to win... I just find it rather annoying that Cryptic releases a new 'faster' board, making it so that people who don't spend out the resources to buy the 'next big thing' are already at a disadvantage, while leaving the not-so-user-friendly race mechanics in the place. (I fully expect Cryptic to offer up a new even faster board next year)
Also, kinda scratching my head on why Cryptic offers the less expensive boards? It is obvious that only the high-end boards are even competitive, so why offer lesser versions?
Unless... If cryptic is going to offer up a non-competitive powerboard race, then the lower end boards would be useful. I might even use my board for more than 'inventory clutter'.
Definately experiencing "buyer's remorse", I'm just glad I didn't buy powerboards for any of my alts.

The rubberbanding/lag/server-client discrepancy makes the boards completely incomparable. You cannot tell wether the Targ boards are faster than the other superior boards because you will never have "fair" conditions. When people seem to pass by it probably means they were already ahead of you all the time, you just didn't notice because of latency. Because at the start I am always ahead of everyone, on a targ board or on a rental board. That probably isn't right.
The wavering of the board I think, doesn'T actually do anything, it's just the animation. Your actual position however doesn't change. So not getting a boost when passing over an arrow (which happens now and then even if hitting it) is, again, probably a latency/server position issue.
STO cannot handle a competetive race. The whole thing had to be time-based and categorized in basic, medium and superior class boards.

I tried doing one of these races with a rental under the expectation I wouldn't win. I didn't even get a 'thanks for showing up' prize. Near the end the flag thing came up and I missed, even though I could have hit 3rd place. Because the flags change position. I'm not sinking 1500 favours into a leet powerboard for something so twitchy and irritating and vulnerable to lag and rubberbanding.

This *may* be the case, however, I didn't experience any rubberbanding/skipping, my performance was rather smooth... *shrugs*
We can't blame everything on lag/latency, I noticed a good half-dozen targs zipping past me, and just as many other boards falling behind me. Personally I don't think it was a lag issue.
Oh, and I did line the board up perfectly for the boost panel (no, rubberbanding, frame skips, or any of that), and still missed when the board wavered...
Again, I can't be 100% certain, but I'm confident it wasn't a lag/latency issue.
I wish they would add a few more shallow rocks and other obstacles in the course. The course only has three our for opportunities to make mistakes. The rest of it is just straight speed. Add more opportunities to make mistakes, and then better boards won't be so much of an advantage.
Dont know why they dont just let you rent all the board tiers for higher EC. Pay high rent till you can own the best boards. They should probably have a race for each board class too, no mixing boards. Low end boards have easy courses, top end boards have the hardest skill track.
I think we need less players per instance too. My card still runs this game fine, but FPS drop big time on Risa.

A race for each board class would make it more fair, though there would have to be many races.. lol
The rent thing could work, but it wouldn't fix the problem of the Targ board being superior than the other superior boards..
Definately agree with the lower players/instance, though I usually only experience an FPS hit at the beginning of the horga'hn hunt. (when everyone pops on a jetpack and spams the flame particle effects all at once lol)
I have beaten the "Targ" board on my Midnight Marauder many times coming in first. First thing I do is find the lowest populated instance and make sure I have the "Party Nulifier" in my inventory. Then hit "C" to kneel on the board and do the Samba Advanced Dance. Don't ask me why but doing the dance on the board actually makes it easier to control. When I come up to the flag if I am in first, I head straight for it and spam the "F" key. Don't get me wrong, I don't always win, but out of the 10 races I ran yesterday, I won 5 on my "Midnight" and only 2 on my "Targ". The other 3 were run on my Targ and I got disqualified for leaving the race area. Having the best board doesn't always guarantee winning, racing smart can almost always guarantee a top 3 placement.

Why too many races? The races start at 15 and 38 Minutes after the hour and for the other time nothing happenson that area.
We could have 3 categories for the 50, 500 and 1000-1500 Lohlunat Boards (since only the Targ is faster than 60 and that doesn't guarantee the 1st place in every race i don't think that we nedd an extra category for TARGS. and according to the Tooltip the IDIC is slower than other 1000 Lohlunat Boards so we would need an extra category for those too. I'd say 3 are enough.
THere could be a race every 10 min.
10 and 40 min after the Hour for 50 Lohlunat Boards
20/50 for the 500
30 and every full hour for the 1000-1500.
6 Races, enough time between them and every category still has 2 races per hour.
Of course the races could interfere with other activities but then you'd have to decide if you want to do the Race or something else thats happening at the same time.

That flag system (having to klick the flag after crossing the finish line) is a real fun killer and makes the race pretty pointless.
I've been doing that race the first time ever, and by luck i was even 2nd. on some races. But thanks for that stupid flag i got only normal prize, just because there was nothing to klick on.
You got to search for a long time time to find such a stupid game mechanic in a game.
It's a real game (race) breaker.
wanna know the worst? some lunatics put shields around the flag, and nobody can grab it upon reaching finish line. happened just now at instance #3.
that's the real fun killer.
Add items like mario Kart, so everyone has a decent chance and to make it more of a player vs player, instead of just a time trial with no real interaction.
my own issue if you like that is starting to become a minor irritant is the booster recognition especially with some frame rate drop or lagency issues. its failing to activate one too many times and have lost a few too many races to the flag because of it. i typically take my racing seriously no matter where, for me its something of a touchy subject.. but here its laughable to try, none-the-less as of right now though i would like to see the boosters react better to a players position and better detection points.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

This would rock. I love how Mario kart has balance features that boost the poor performers but Slw the fast people. And they're balanced so to not make it impossible, they're just handicaps,
Raced for the first time today. Actually finished 2nd but the flag didn't appear till I passed it so by the time I got back to the finish line all that was left was the participated prize. Worst design ever for a racing game. Complete waste of time. Winning the race isn't about speed at all, it is about who can hit the F key the fastest and the most at the end.
First, the unfairness of having an inferior board.Knowing your going to place last because you see everyone else have the super fast boards.
This is where I stopped reading, as the solution to your complaint is self-evident: get a superior board too. One of the first things I did. Don't be a cheap-skate, spent a few EC, get yourself a 1,000 Lohnunats, and be done with it.
N.B. On a personal note, I don't get why peeps are so angry about this race. Me? I just participate because I thnk I'm looking wickedly good on that thing. :P I bought the best board, simply because I love shiny stuff, LOL; and I don't care how I place. Seriously, who cares?! I'm just having fun. People pass me by? Fine; I was probably thinking more about whether my new wetsuit is properly color-coordinated with my board than about the race itself anyway.

This is my touch on it as well. I'm especially baffled by people claiming those boards are something you have to endlessly grind for. Since the beginning of the festival I bought probably three quarters of the costumes, a superior floater and a targ board. Favours are really quickly earned if you have more than one character and even if you hav one it shouldn't take more than that, especially considering how long the festival lasts.
One horgh'ar-whatever hunt, average 100-ish favours. Sandcastle 50, race 15-75 (since this is what the fuss is about we go with 15), dancing (which I don't even do) 50-ish. That's 200 favours for 45 minutes of playtime. Do that a week and you have the favours for the targ. Use more characters and you can easily tripple or quadruple that and make a targ board or two a day while chatting with your fleet/buddies or whatever.
When I race on the Targ I win maybe one in ten races, make second or third in two and smash in some obstacle because I wasn't paying attention in every other race and return to the tailor afterwards
Though one can still rightfully criticize the grab-the-flag mechanic. It doesn't work. Latency issues will scre that up real badly - STO cannot handle "competetive" races - they should implement a different mechanic reflecting that.

You don't even have to do that. The Targ boards are easily available to every single player. that's the real fun killer.
1) Each 'class' of board is it own race (Rental, Standard, Enhanced, Superior, HOG) that runs concurrent on the track.
2) Change the jump and boost pad buffs from +x% to +x speed so that lower quality boards benefit more from the increase.
Something that needs to happen either way is that players and constructs need to become intangible during the race to racers.
