Upgrades to the Varanus Science Ship

Fellow Warriors,

I have seen many threads focusing on the desire for a T6 KDF science ship. One of the frequent comments made in the thread is the fact that the Varanus is an inferior ship compared to Federation T5 science vessels. I am by not means an expert on science ships and builds, but the question I did have is this. How do you make the Varanus competitive with Federation science ships like the Vesta? Please keep advice constructive and not insulting.

Some initial thoughts -

1) Change its consoles and seating to closer match that of the science Vesta

2) Give it an Auxiliary Hanger that can launch any of the drone type "fighters" as a support for the ship and team mates.

The floor is yours. How should the Varanus be fixed?

An upgrade for the varanus would be great, but I doubt that will happen. Nevertheless, for a start, since there are 3 Gorn ships, a 2- and 3-piece set bonus for the consoles (Aceton assimilator, barrier field and support plattform) would be good. Something like a boost to turnrate, shields and drain or so.

    Sarcastic (but accurate) answer:
    That's just me, though. :P

    Serious (but extremely unlikely) answer:
    • I'd make the performance more akin to the updated D'Kyr...
    • ...though rather than the innate ability to Launch Support Craft I'd set its Turn Rate and Inertia to that of the Phalanx (a vastly more enjoyable ship to fly at its Tier than the Varanus)...
    • ...getting something like:
      • Rank: Brigadier General
      • Tier: 5
      • Type: Science Vessel
      • Hull: 30,000
      • Hull (T5-U): 34500
      • Standard Shields: 6,143 (Mk VIII)
      • Standard Shields (T5-U): 7064
      • Shield Modifier: 1.3
      • Weapons: Fore 3, Aft 3
      • Crew: 300
      • Bridge Officers: Lt Tac, Lt Cmdr Eng, Cmdr Sci, Lt Sci, Ens Uni
      • Device Slots: 3
      • Consoles: 2 Tac/3 Eng /4 Sci (Fleet +1 Tac, T5-U +1 Sci)
      • Turn Rate: 14
      • Impulse Modifier: 0.15
      • Inertia rating: 40
      • Bonus Power: +15 auxiliary power
      • Cost: 2,000 Zen
      • Abilities: Secondary Deflector, Sensor Analysis, Subsystem Targeting
    • For the simple reason that at Level 40 T5, we can't reasonably expect to perform quite up to what the Level 50 T5 Vesta can do. Keeping up with its compatriots at level, though, would be nice. Losing an innate special ability and the Tal'Kyr Support Craft account unlock seems like a fair trade for an increased Turn Rate (and a tad less Inertia) and the Repair Platform console account unlock.

Personally, though, I'd rather they finish the Intel line for the KDF/Roms, make at least one T6 Science Ship for the KDF/Roms, or do both at the same time. :P

Right off the top, if you took the Varanus, let it mount DHCs, created an Aux Disruptor DHC, Bumped turn rate to 12 (to use those cannons somewhat effectively), gave it the "full standard" +15 Aux Power, and made the Lt. seat Universal (so it can be engie or tac, and even Sci if you're sadistic enough) - you'd almost have a "Vesta Light" for the KDF. Give it a hangar, shields to 1.35 (Vesta's is 1.4), keep the hull, and a 5th Sci console as part of the "fleet" upgrade, and you'd have a ship to be reckoned with... :)

T6 can clone the Pathfinder, just needs skins...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

I would not really worry much about the Tier 5 version anymore. Tier 6 is where at it's at, and I doubt any KDF players would buy a Tier 5 Varanus right now if they haven't already, and the calls for a KDF Science Vessel won't be silenced by a Tier 5 ship when we have Tier 6 ships anyway.

I would recommend releasing it together in a 3-ship faction bundle, e.g. create an equivalent Federation and Romulan ship, too. This way, many people that consider the ship for one faction will just choose to buy it for all 3 - at the price of two, which will often be a net win for Cryptic. (Which is why they make the faction bundles in the first place, I think.)
Not sure if the Ha'Nom is the right Romulan counterpart, but clearly the Deep Space Science Vessel Space Shoe of the Federation is the right Starfleet counterpart.

A Tier 6 Varanus could be:
    • Cmdr Science
    • Lt. Cmdr Engineering / Command
    • Lt. Cmdr Science
    • Lt. Tactical
    • Ensign Universal
    • Secondar Deflector, Sensor Analysis, Subsystem Targeting
    • 4 Science Consoles (+1 Fleet)
    • 3 Tactical Consoles
    • 3 Engineering Consoles
    • Turn Rate, Speed and Weapons and the like will all be the same as the Tier 5 version.

Starship Mastery Trait must be something everyone will want. Maybe something that increases the length or damage of exotic damage effects, or reduces cooldowns? Something that buffs a less used power to become more desirable?

    Ideas:
Starship Mastery Trait - Improved Photonic Shockwave
Increases the range of PSW to 5 km, and gives it 50 % shield penetration. -> Suddenly this power might be a useful for DPS again!
Starship Mastery Trait - Improved Photonic Officer
Reduces the cooldown and the global cooldown of Photonic Officer by 50 %.
Starship Mastery Trait - Stabilized Exotic Particle
When dealing damage to a target with exotic damage, the target suffers -25 % damage resistance for 10 seconds and a penalty to stealth.

    Starship Console - Sensor Platform
The Varanus can deploy a Sensor Platform that scans surrounding targets for weak spots and attempts to uncover cloaked vessels. The platform lasts for 60 seconds. Any enemy within 10km of the platform suffers a penalty to damage resistance, and all allies within 10 km of the platform gain a bonus to stealth sight.

Repair Platform + Sensor Platform Synergy:
If you have both platforms equipped, you gain the Joint Platform Synergy:
    +10 % tun rate.
When deploying a Sensor or Repair Platform, you release a joined sensor/repair platform that shares the abilities of both. You can have up to two of these platforms active at the same time.

It wouldn't surprise me if we start seeing mixed ship bundles to throw us off a bit. The most recent bundle stuffed 2 Battlecruisers (Fed Avenger/KDF Mogh) with 1 Escort (Mogai).

I got the Varanus free I think a couple of years back, fun ship, but ever since they unlocked the repair platform console, I don't use it, I just stuck the console on my Fleet T-U Corsair, with those Ship Trait I got from the Breen Carrier, it heals me and my fighters.

Not sure how mixed they are going to get, but the current bundle is an interesting precedent. But Romulans are a bit special anyway, since the main name of their ship class is always Warbird, even if there are clearly some that are more like Cruisers and some that are more like Escorts, and one that's more a Science Vessel.

I think the least they can do is give it, and maybe the other non-Klingon ships more than a single skin.

I have the feeling that's actually much more work for Cryptic then slapping on an extra console slot or altering the BO layout.

Though I'd really appreciate if they did that.

The only thing the varanus needed to be more like the KDF fleet, is more turn rate. Outside of the Bortas'Qu, and the Mogh, the other KDF ships have higher turn rate than comparable federation counterparts. The andromeda has a turn rate of 6, the Negh 'Tev has 9. The BOFF and console layouts are the same.
The deep space science vessel has the same layout and a turn rate the same as the varanus. Most other KDF ships that have a similar federation counterpart have higher turn rates.
A T6 varanus really only needs the Fleet T-5 layout and a boost to turn rate, maybe turn rate of 15 like the Korath temporal science vessel, for it to be in line with KDF ships, and a Fleet T6 version would have the 5th sci console slot.
