Personally, I find it funny that the complaint is about the FX of the spam rather than the underlying spam itself. Cause if the underlying spam were not taking place, then the FX of that spam would not be taking place. It's as if the FX is a red flag showing just how spammy the game is and people just don't want to be reminded of that...cause perhaps they'd rather not adjust the spammy nature of what they're doing. Cause for all the complaints that folks don't remember Star Trek looking like that...where have the complaints about Star Trek not being spammy like this game is been?

Removing the cause of the overloaded FX would be preferable of course, but it is highly unlikely they will do that since it would need to turn the whole game mechanics upside down.

I am not happy with how things work in STO belive me, but there is no chance they will change that in a manageable amount of time.. And to be honest, i don't care anymore if the game is spammy or not. To make it more Trek like would be equivalent to creating a new game imo.

Making the rediculus and laughable FX optional on the other hand, is much more in the realm of possibility imo.

Wouldn't matter anyway. Even now in a pvp match the buff/debuff bar stretches so far to almost be the full width of the screen. You do not have time to look at each individual one even if you could see them all. Being able to turn off the over the top, kaleidoscope effects might make for a cleaner experience pve/pvp wise but all the little icons need to cleaned up as well. Even on ground that's getting pretty crazy the more they add.

+1 vote for a TOGGLE to turn the FX off.

You can find/contact me in game as @PatricianVetinari. Playing STO since Feb 2010.

Yeah, I have had to adjust my HUD because of the buff icons. They hide my Sensor Analysis button in the default setup.

I could not agree more. I have always hated, and wished for a way to turn off all the silly cartoon icons flying around. In no way, shape, or form does it look like an epic space battle from any sci-fi series, or movie (let alone star trek).

the undine battle zone is of course one of the worst offenders. On top of all these crazy disco cartoon effects you have undine snot bubbles and portals, combined with ships teleporting all over the place. Its even better when you complete an objective and all your enemies just fade out of existence. :P
Yeah it a real relief when fighting ends.

Honestly i see no reason of any why kind the game would need all those cartoony FX at all. They are just cluttering the screen and stress computer performance FOR NO REASON.

With every new Console, BOFF power or Trait the problem gets worse.
At first when STO started seeing 6 or 8 beams fire at once was already a strech, but it is nothing compared to what's going on today.
Seriously it's not even funny anymore.

I say they just keep adding more and more FX until the servers can't handle it, and the devs literally break the game with clicky spam.

On a different note, if we showed these pics to the FX artist and asked him or her to identify all the spam going on, do you think they'd be able to?
I ask nothing but that you remember me.

Just get ONE of the Devs to spend a few minutes in the Dyson Space Battlezone at one of the Planet Killers or one of the Voth Citadel Ships ... Pah, so much Visual and Physical FX from all these powers, and it's a total farce!

You can't see ANYTHING except Rainbow puke and Screen Shakes (even with screen shake turned off!) There is no "tactics" or "gameplay" involved because it's impossible to even see your own ship, let alone the enemy.

And Cryptic may need to make the "Epilepsy Warning" more prevalent if this keeps up. I don't have the condition, but even I start to sometimes feel dizzy and nauseous watching all this "spam" on the screen.

You know, I personally haven't experienced this since I'm not susceptible to it but I've been told that a lot of the new effects can cause severe headaches for some people. Honestly I can see how that can be caused with a lot of the crappy flashy animations Cryptic's been adding with the newer weapons etc.

I HATE the current state of the flashy bs effects, I want it to go back to the more "realistic" looks and feel we had before Delta Rising.

And these black whole swirly things are almost taking over the BZ (Lol, though most disappear with enough proc spam on the screen <sigh>

Today I did a Defera ground mission, a simple one, meant for one playere. At some moment a player shot at a group of borg and there was a big pool of snot or blub all over the place. Snot in space, snot on the ground, its is Snot Online.

Seriously, we are supposed to be in the future. Do we want it, a weapon that delivers some kind of slime? Really, the Byzantines had greek fire. That was the 7th century. In the 25th century we have snot and slime.

I was seriuosly thinking of buying a lifetime sub. I am glad I didn't. I would be interested in a lifetime sub for a STO retro, that is STO before DR.

Serioulsy, i think we have come to a point where abilities and other things don't need a graphical representation in space or (ground) anymore.

    Just some ranodom images:

    screenshot_2015-05-02-02-41-58_zpsnwls57tr.jpg

Is anyone supposed to get bearings anymore?

Abilites that only appy to the player needn't be shown at all, and the rest should be toggable or at least reduceable.
Serioulsy this doesn't look like space combat anymore it's more like WOW on steroids, lol.

I know it's supposed to help PvPers to see what the enemy is doing, but come on guys it's simply too much and doesn't help anymore.

What do other players think about this issue?
Alright, maybe i'm the only one, but it really gets confusing by now imo.

I would like to throw such fitting contrast with a few examples from Star Trek

    DS9: Dominion War
    TWOK: Enterprise vs Reliant I
    Galaxy-class!
    An excuse for Sovereign-class footage

Obviously, there's not enough Glitter, Sparkles, Rainbows, and Bedazzle in canon Star Trek combat.

    Ah wonderful footage!

Do you notice? The Akira and Steamrunner for ex. do not behave or in any way indicate to be like escorts. No super fast maneuvers, no Cannons or any other nonsense Cryptic gave them.
They're just "cruisers" similar to Nebula or Sovereign, just lighter.

No Space anomalies, no 6-8 beams fireing per ship, or super fast jetfighter maneuvers (not even the defiant), no one parking and shooting or ANY OTHER nonsense Cryptic invented!
Man i wish STO battles would not only look but feel like that. I would even like to fly a Defiant if it wouldn't handle like a Jetfighter on drugs, lol.

Just an idea regarding STO, what if weapons range would be increased to 20 Km, no one would need to turn so fast and everything would look and feel more like in "real" Star Trek?
In general everything would need to be turned a bit down like combat speed in general, repairing ships, how fast you loose and gain HP and shields and so on.
But first and foremost, that cartoonish FX needs to be made optional or completely removed.

Um...what PvP'ers? we already had plenty of clues just with the tooltips. That stuff isn't for PvP (Nothing in this game is), it's for PvE players-because they don't communicate by other means.
Not all PvE players are as stupid as you may imply, just because they are not interested in confrontation with other players in- and outside STO.

This isn't about PvE vs. PvP players, there's no need to be upset at all. We're all trying to improve STO, because we like Star Trek.

I didn't say PvP players asked for it.
I meant that Cryptics devs obviously had PvP gameplay in mind when first creating those visuals, which have gone out of hand in the last few years.
(At least that's what ppl said when someone raised the same topic a few years ago.)

But even if such excessive FX where somehow beneficial for PvP, it still would make sense to make it an option for each player (client side), don't you think?
I hope that explains what i meant.

Most MMORPG's these days actually have toggles for power effects. :P
They have to, or Raids would be virtually unplayable, of course STO does not have those(sadly).

I don't think PvE really cares about the feedback.

I mean, the only really important one is Feedback Pulse, which isn't anywhere near as distracting. Everything else is kind of irrelevant, plus there's still those icons anyway.

Speaking of which, I wish buff and debuff icons were on different rows to make it easier to see at a glance.

I'm just frightened about what's going to happen the next time Cryptic re-runs the CE Event

That has always been a chugging spam fest, but with all these new procs going off alll over, it'll be hysterical. A CE run will take around 4.36 hours, because it'll be running at less than 10 frames per second. :D

Maybe i'm just a terrible player, but all the FX doesn't tell me anything i didn't already know.

Unfortunately this is kinda a hallmark of Cryptic games (and to a certain extent MMOs in general)

I remember back in City of Heroes days when you literally couldn't see anything but FX and UI during some combats.
