Am I the only one who thinks each new ship released makes it so much more difficult to play the game, because our favourite ships...the iconics and even lock box and lobi's, keep getting blown out of the water and reduced to shuttles by comparison, by the newer ships?
Unless you're willing to pay exorbitant prices for fugly ships, which aren't canon, you just can't compete. I want to be able to fly the Equinox or Enterprise-A...but with all these mad and wacky piloting abilities and consoles, we're getting rings run around us.
To compete with what? Because I had a desire to fly a science ship with my KDF characters, I picked the Varanus and the Draguas. The first was a gift from Cryptic and the Draguas did I buy for the Aceton TRIBBLE. console. You know what? I finished the Delta story arc with the Draguas and my tac. It was hairy some times, but I was never blown up. Doing Delta Rising in a t4 ship.
I play on normal off course, but that is exactly the same game as advanced, only the numbers are different.
Yes, welcome to pay to win Space Trek Wars Online. It's been this way for a while now, they've just given up trying to pretend it's not.
As the mightily-bemonikered sopwithsnipe notes, what is it you think you're paying to "win"?
@OP: Do you PVP? If not, who are you trying to impress?
Even on Advanced queues, any reasonably-handled T5U is plenty good enough. The new pilot ships have some impressive features, but don't have (for example) the sheer hitting power SS3 gives the Phantom, or the blunt resilience of the Manasa. There is a bit of a logical disconnect between running cannons and staying at high speed all the time in this game...
Sure, you can buy a performance enhancement; but it's not needed to do well, and unless you're in the now-tiny minority who PVP, frankly it's all self-induced pressure.
I actually have sympathy for the Cryptic devs on this one. If a new ship doesn't have abilities or a general power level that make it at least perceptually superior to existing designs, very few will buy it (case in point - the Fed Science Destroyers). OTOH, they have balanced the content around a much lower expectation of a T5U ship for L60 missions. So players are being given a very reasonable choice, really.
Unless you're willing to pay exorbitant prices for fugly ships, which aren't canon, you just can't compete. I want to be able to fly the Equinox or Enterprise-A...but with all these mad and wacky piloting abilities and consoles, we're getting rings run around us.
*Looks at my Sovereign class*
If you setup your old ship well it should still be viable/good/great to use in PVE. If you haven't, you won't, and you might be tempted to blame that on other changes to the game.
Let me simplify the current state of the STO shipyard: new ships have new features in the sense that new smartphones have features. You want them, and you can make good use of them, but they aren't necessary by any stretch of the imagination.

You're not the only one.. many people have the same ridiculous belief you do, and none of them make any sense either. Whatever ship you're in right now won't be magically less effective tomorrow after the patch. Right now, my Main flies a Presidio, my Delta flies an Eclipse and my Romulan flies either the Scimitar or the freebie T6 (Sarr Theln.) Once the Pilot ships drop, none of those ships will be any less effective then they were today.
I can still hop in my T5-U Sovereign and do most of the content without even the slightest problem. Pilot ships have no effect on that either.
Unless you're willing to pay exorbitant prices for fugly ships, which aren't canon, you just can't compete.
I don't know who you're competing with. If you're playing for PvP, you're already playing the wrong game. There is no competition between players in PvE, if you're experiencing competition in PvE it's all in your head.
I want to be able to fly the Equinox or Enterprise-A...but with all these mad and wacky piloting abilities and consoles, we're getting rings run around us.
So what you're saying is.. "I want everything, and I want it for free."
Good luck getting that anywhere in life. Do you get angry when car companies release a new model with a better sound system or more aerodynamic design then your current car? It's like anything else, if you want the new features, you have to buy them. No one is stopping you from flying the ship you want, but if you want all the new toys, you have to pay for them. No company takes the time to design attractive new design features just to give them away for free. That's what you call a poor business model.
"More difficult to play the game" against whom? the AI controllig the NPC ships is seriously wonky and so slow it can be ridiculous.
"Exorbitant prices" no, not really. if you parse the cost of the ship out, over the course of a year you spend US $2.50 per month. This does not include the price of gear. Which most people I would guess already have most of the gear they want.
"fugly ships which aren't canon" This sounds a lot like a 'I want a T6 Connie!' post at this point. If you want to fly a Sovvy or a Galaxy, you can. No one is stopping you from doing so.
"mad and wacky piloting abllities and consoles" in the paper wargames I played as a young man, we referred to these as Chrome. Something which was nice to have but not really needed for core gameplay. Most of the new Consoles on these ships make them one trick ponies. The one good new Console comes as part of the Iconian Rep. Which is available to anyone and everyone as long as they play the game enough and save some Dilithium. Which is earned through - playing the game now.
And then there is the ultimate response to your feelings about the new ships You could always do this if you wanted. I would take it as a personal favor if I never saw you ever again.
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
Am I the only one who thinks each new ship released makes it so much more difficult to play the game, because our favourite ships...the iconics and even lock box and lobi's, keep getting blown out of the water and reduced to shuttles by comparison, by the newer ships?

Unless Cryptic is increasing the difficulty of the playable Content with each new ship nothing has changed on your end. So in other words, unless the playable Content starting tomorrow requires Barrel Rolls or Power Slides to achieve the objectives in them nothing has changed for you. Your ship still does exactly what it was designed to do and the playable Content still reacts the exact same way to your ship that it always has.
Do not confuse your emotional WANTING of the new power/ability with the actual NEEDING of the new power/ability.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
Do not confuse your emotional WANTING of the new power/ability with the actual NEEDING of the new power/ability.
That is the real issue here. The new ships can do nice stuff that the old ships can't do. But somehow some players cannot admit that they want those new ships because they like new shining things especially shiny things that can move like that. So in order to justify a buy, some people convince themselves that they must have those ships or otherwise the game is not playable anymore. It is either that or i must have missed the new super difficult content that will be released together with those ships.
I got a bunch of T6 ships by now and while they are fun for some time, i somehow always return for my T5u FPER or to my JHDC after some time.
when they first brought in the T6 ships I had been saving up my zen from stipend and exchanging some dil so I had enough to treat myself to the first T6 ship pack and after flying them all I will tell you the honest truth now.
T6 ships are absolutely no better at all then T5u, sure they have the 5th trait and some have a special boff seat but the 5th traits can be used on T5u ships once you have them anyway and you can pick the 5th traits up for free without having to buy T6 ships and the boff seat is not that big a deal.
I don't regret buying the T6 ship pack but I still often use my T5u ships and fair just as well with them so are they much better no they are not, if you cant afford to buy T6 ships don't loose any sleep over it, sure they are different but not better.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
I don't know who you're competing with. If you're playing for PvP, you're already playing the wrong game. There is no competition between players in PvE, if you're experiencing competition in PvE it's all in your head.
Well, technically, there is competition in PvE..... if you're part of the DPS crowd, trying to get a higher & higher "score". But that's still entirely voluntary, and you could just as easily make your own "iconic ship DPS contest" to see who can get the highest score in a canon ship. /shrug
My main in a few year old Fleet Avenger (U'd), running just about the oldest set in the game (assimilated) can out dps any of my other characters in their shiny new T6 ships. I bought the battlecruiser mega bundle, so all my other characters have them, bought whatever that super duper science T6 fed ship was too. Good ships of course, but none of them allow me to solo the command group in Tholian Red Alert and not worry about even scratching the paint like my FA does.
Am I the only one who thinks each new ship released makes it so much more difficult to play the game, because our favourite ships...the iconics and even lock box and lobi's, keep getting blown out of the water and reduced to shuttles by comparison, by the newer ships?

Op if you fly a ship out there and you manage to balance it correctly you can win a lot off battle's with your T4 or T5 or T5U Iconic ship it's just a matter of balancing your ship right... I myself fly an Van quv Carrier... all right it's a fleet version but I still give those bad guys a hard day work with my four bird of prey support ships ...
On my Fed Char I fly the Galaxy X fleet version T5U with only one hanger with 6 peregrine fighters but they have a hard day to get me the only thing I paid so far was for the ship upgrade but even with game EC... 10.000.000 EC but it's well worth it !!!
You don't have to pay a dime if you play this game correctly my mate even took out a T6 with his T4 in a PVP Match just like I said it's how you balance your stuff ....

"Coffee: the finest organic suspension ever devised. It's got me through the worst of the last three years. I beat the Borg with it."
No you aren't alone. There are plenty of people on the forum that mistakenly believe as you do, but in reality the new ships only affect the minuscule PvP population.
This is a pretty dumb statement. The ships are being bought up for Power Creep (the next stage of capability) and more so if it's a design they like (i.e. Galaxy, D'D, Negh'Vars, Intrepids, etc). And Power Creep, believe it or not, has applications outside PVP. Goodness gracious, you still upset about that player flown Bird of Prey killing you years ago?
Anyways, Power Creep is Power Creep. The little extras of T6 have uses, because though Fleet T5U = Fleet T6 in console slots, T6 has +1 BOFF ability count. That alone is a game changer. And things like that have a longer reach. These improvements aren't a PVP thing only. It affects the game in general.
It's amazing what happens to the much maligned Galaxy-class when you give it +1 BOFF skill count.
And I'm not even getting into depth about the leap of Power Creep with T6 ship traits. That has undeniable applications in PVP and PVE. What do you think Reciprocity means for the Feds out there in general? What about All Hands on Deck? What about those 2 traits working together? You think that's a PVP application only? Serious?
For someone that has been around as long as you have, you couldn't have been way more off the mark.
Am I the only one who thinks each new ship released makes it so much more difficult to play the game, because our favourite ships...the iconics and even lock box and lobi's, keep getting blown out of the water and reduced to shuttles by comparison, by the newer ships?

I'm not sure what your basis is for classifying anything except the most current 11 console, 12 ability C-Store ship as a "shuttle."
Look, I get that people want the best, and want to put up the highest numbers. I'm in that boat with you. I want to push my DPS as high as I can possibly get it, for my own satisfaction. It's a work in progress. I'm hitting 20k + on certain patrols, and have hit 40k + against certain large targets in exactly the right circumstances. Having a bigger, better (and more expensive) ship helps with that.
But let's keep it in perspective. You can complete ALL the story missions in the game successfully in a ship that does 2k DPS. You can contribute meaningfully to every normal mode STF in the game with 5k DPS. You can do advanced and higher STFs and contribute meaningfully with 10k DPS. Guess what? You can do all of that with a level 40 tier 5 dilithium ship.
So yeah, it's nice to have those big ships with the stacked consoles and billion BOFF abilities, but it's hardly necessary in order to play any aspect of the game except maybe PvP.
Am I the only one who thinks each new ship released makes it so much more difficult to play the game, because our favourite ships...the iconics and even lock box and lobi's, keep getting blown out of the water and reduced to shuttles by comparison, by the newer ships?

At this point I'm more inclined to think the lag in instances and other places is making the game more difficult to play. I was in ISA with fleeties last night and the lag was so bad for everyone in the instance that full cycles of FAW or BO would pass before the lag let up to shoot the weapons.
I will say though that the new ships might be taking away efforts to clean up the game code so there isn't lag and the game itself is more playable because fixing things doesn't bring in as much profit as having a new shiny ship on the Z store.

What's awesome is clicking on an ability that doesn't do anything but still goes into cooldown. Like hitting HYT3, wait a few seconds, then firing the torp. Only to see a single, unbuffed torpedo fire and you notice HYT3 going into cooldown.
I discovered this the hard way. All last week I forced myself to play with my beloved Jem'Hadar Dreadnought Carrier. For some strange reason I couldn't stay alive in any of the STF's. This is strange because a year ago, I could bulldoze anything in my path. My setup hasn't changed.
Then I realized that I spent 6 months playing exclusively with my Voth Flight Deck Cruiser (statically the best flight deck ship in the game ). I though this was a fluke.
Now I can't even look at my Jem Dread. I used to love that ship, but it seems that we need marriage counseling to make it work. I doesn't help that everyone that I'm constantly being told by my friends "Xindi Aquatic Dreadnought carrier is the updated" version of my Jem Dreadnought." I don't want an upgrade, I want my Jem Dreadnought to be compatible.
I know my words fall on blind eyes, re-balancing older ships isn't something cryptic does because they can't make money from it. I'm sure cryptic has some extra unknown programming that they add to the new ships. Statically, my Voth Flight deck shouldn't be able to have more DPS or a higher hull strength than my Jem Dreadnought. Both are T5U and fully mastered, but for some strange reason where my Voth would have 7% hull loss, my Jem Dreadnought will have 35% hull loss.
Same weapons, same consoles, same BOFF's, same STF's and yet the damage and survivability between the two ships is obvious. My JHDC is weaker than the Voth Flight deck cruiser.
One day Cryptic will be free from their Perfect World overlord. Until that day comes, they will continue to pamper the whales of this game, and ignore everyone that isn't a whale.
What's awesome is clicking on an ability that doesn't do anything but still goes into cooldown. Like hitting HYT3, wait a few seconds, then firing the torp. Only to see a single, unbuffed torpedo fire and you notice HYT3 going into cooldown.
Oh yeah... and doing defensive things like transfer shield strength four or five times before it actually presses. Or Emergency power to shields half a dozen times.

Nothing OP about them, not even their traits could be considered a must have... Nice, but definitely not a must have...
They're nothing more than a nice alternative to existing escorts/destroyers that just so happen to have a couple neat little tricks...
Many are also downright hideous to look at - Romulan especially, not a looker amongst them...
As the mightily-bemonikered sopwithsnipe notes, what is it you think you're paying to "win"?
