One of the biggest things about space is just how freakin' much of it there is.

I know, really, its almost like they named it "space" for a reason! :D

The most striking thing about the new sector space is that it is entirely empty and devoid of other players. A vast endless empty expanse. Cold and dark and lonesome. Like you're the only person in whole of creation.

Sector space used to be crowded, you'd see ships of all description going this way and that, people on unknown errands, it felt alive.

Now just vast, dark, quiet emptiness.

Each quadrant of the Galaxy limited to 25 ships. Most not nearly that full.

It doesn't feel massively multiplayer anymore.

Maybe it would be better to have more people per instance, it would be best to have as many as possible in each instance.

Why...it's perfect now for the manic depressives of the gaming world!

I like the sector space change, and it has been something a lot of people wanted for the longest time, that being said, the emptiness could indeed give the wrong impression that no one is playing the game; mostly dead queue's don't help. Of course in this psychotic sto gaming community that we all enjoy, speculations can be a powerful "force" in feeding the manic depressive tendencies of the netizens. Perhaps a Captain counter in the corner of the screen would make people feel like they have brothers and sisters in spaceflight fighting the good fight.

Though, if there was one thing I'd change, I'd make it a little bit brighter so I can actually see the hull texture on my ships.
    At this point I am:

    2) Space may be dark, but this is Star Trek, I should be able to see how cool my ship looks when traveling at warp.

I whole-heartedly agree. I love the new sector space a lot, and I understand that they want to have a better sense of realism, but even in the shows ships traveling at warp were illuminated. I'd rather not get the feeling like we are in an area like that ST:Voyager episode "The Void" where it was all dark and spooky, lol

Remember, part of Trek is that the ships are also considered characters. Light those puppies up, we want to admire them ;)

I like the new sector space but I wish they had made a new slipstream animation for it , like the one that was in one of the later delta episodes if I remember right .

I kind of like it. There are still people around the hubs (DS9, ESD). Besides, how many times in the shows did they say something along the lines of 'the nearest ship is x weeks away'. Now it looks like it.

    This. ^

I never saw an episode where star ships were falling over each other like the NPC's in Half-life following Gordon around. Well except maybe when they had the Dominion war but those were usually in system/local space areas.

I am so glad there are fewer ships now. It feels more like a trek through space. Plus people are still at the places you expect to find them at hubs. It feels right. Me and my lone crew trekking through the vastness of space going where quite literally no other person is at, and when I need contact going back to a main planet or space station.

I can actually travel in my Scimitar without getting caught on other player ships. Yes! :D

Each instance still has the same number of players. Its just now they aren't all confined to 1 sector map.
Well excuse me for having enormous flaws that I don't work on.

Nothing like watching Scims fall over each other around a planet or one hopping on another trying to get around it and looking like something the neighbors dogs do that you never wanted to see in the first place.

Well, that's basically how astronauts describe space.

    Correct.

Space is meant to be emty, due to being ... well... vast...

Completely and totally disagree with the OP. Much better this way. Much more like the shows. You only saw other ships when you were at a starbase or some place where there was a lot of activity, like a war. Warping around the galaxy it wasn't like some kind of starship superhighway like the old sector maps were.

This is much more like Star Trek.

I actually really love the new 'vast emptiness' feeling of space now. It feels much more realistic to not see dozens of other ships buzzing around me. Or to have my flight path adjusted constantly for fear of bumping into said ships. The only place I ever want to see lots of ships is in orbit of social zones.

Wait... you mean they made sector space feel like... space? Isn't that a good thing?

If you're feeling lonely, might I suggest visiting one of the social zones in the game, such as Earth Spacedock, or Drozana Station, perhaps even the Dyson Sphere...

Personally I'm still using Transwarp Drive... so I never really dealt with Sector Space but I don't think these are bad changes even if they don't really impact me aside from those rare occasions my TW is on cooldown.

Yes, vast and empty...sector space finally feels like SPACE. It's awesome.

Old sector space felt like an over-crowded fish tank.

its better this way because now its actually how it was depicted in the Tv shows, they were always like the closest ship is so many days away etc and so now it actually feels like that would be true on top of that everything isnt shoved together in a tiny box which is another thing I like about it.

Not to mention it adds at least a semblence of realism even though the new sector space is only a fraction of what real space is like.

Thanks God space is finally vast and empty. I hated that old small sectored areas where you fell more like at space car park..

Yes, like the new look...... have't once had to go around some slowpoke poking around at sub-warp10 speeds. feels more trek to me.... see people around major hubs.... but when traversing the map rarely see anyone else

Very calm and soothing travel now.

I have to disagree with the op on this. I think it is breathtaking in the beauty and how it has more feeling to it.
Before an aweful lot of space travel was hitting odd 'space walls' and seeing huge billboards in space that crushed the illusion of travel. Now it feels more like space and the shows we all love.

Till they get good enough hardware to bring all the walls down. I bow to the great job they did here.

It is very striking to go from massively cluttered maps to vast expanses of nobody being around AT ALL. Takes a lot of getting used to. I cant tell if I like it, makes me feel very alone which is maybe not what I'm after in an MMO but technically, it was the only way as I do not want to endure horrendous drama with loads of people spluttering around the same map and it all crashing.

If folks think that the Sector Space in STO is huge...they must live [Redacted]. It takes a few minutes to fly across the map. Some games have single areas that are larger than that. It's tiny, and having it all out in the open of just how tiny it all actually is...meh...is kind of disheartening.

It did serve its function to nerf rewards though...kind of like the Advanced Queues thing they're talking about doing.

But folks will gobble it all up...whatever.
