The most striking thing about the new sector space is that it is entirely empty and devoid of other players. A vast endless empty expanse. Cold and dark and lonesome. Like you're the only person in whole of creation.
Sector space used to be crowded, you'd see ships of all description going this way and that, people on unknown errands, it felt alive.
Now just vast, dark, quiet emptiness.
Each quadrant of the Galaxy limited to 25 ships. Most not nearly that full.
It doesn't feel massively multiplayer anymore.
Maybe it would be better to have more people per instance, it would be best to have as many as possible in each instance.
As Star Trek has always been more of a solitary experience - one Captain and crew taking on all the Galaxy has to throw it at - I prefer it this way.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
Well that's a concession they had to make I guess. Bigger maps but fewer players per map. I'm pretty sure if they could make instances with 50, 75 or 100 players work without lags they would've done it. Also keep in mind that not everybody plays on a high end desktop.
I kind of like it. There are still people around the hubs (DS9, ESD). Besides, how many times in the shows did they say something along the lines of 'the nearest ship is x weeks away'. Now it looks like it.

Sounds good, but how many can they put in before we all start rubberbanding. Right now I can boogie around the quadrants with much less bounciness that the old sector blocks.
I actually like space as being more space like. Between scaling and fixed sector transition points the old sector block felt like a busy sidewalk. Lots of people, but in a single mass that you couldn't possibly be asked to notice.

I agree, my first reaction was wahoooo! and I started piloting around space checking out the new look, after about 5 minutes I thought "woahh" where did everyone go??
I would argue that this is how it should have been all along. Quinn says early on that they don't have enough ships or officers, which is why he made a choice of pulling strings to bump you into the captain's chair early.
Along with that, space IS vast. If I were roaming space, I would not expect to see 30 ships around every corner. If anything, I would say this sector space with low player counts is far more in line with how the series were. Sure, you occasionally come across a ship and you are like "oh hi, you need help with anything?" Beyond that, though, space really is a lonely place. No one to hear you scream if something goes wrong (unless they forget to jam your communications first).
PS. Man, you guys are fast. When I start typing there are no comments, then when I finish there are a dozen. I like that, means I have to type faster.

i think it fits the situation: especially the FED had never that huge a fleet to "crowd" a sector. how often did we hear "the only ship in range"? and: space IS huge and vast and contains over all emptiness. two weeks ago i cursed sitting in a miranda again and crouching through the sector at warp 5. now, my max is transwarp 25.4 when triggering slipstream, and it still takes bloody ages to cross the map. but now it feels RIGHT. the movement of the ship IS fast, as you can see when objects fly by. but the distances... i like em

Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.
I really like it this way. When I'm out at the ends of known space doing some doffing, there's almost no one there. As I slowly come back to the civilized areas of space (near hubs), the traffic slowly starts to pick up. Once I reach a hub, all the player ships buzzing around it makes it feel properly populated. Space finally feels like space. It's empty where it should be and populated where it should be. This is a good thing.
I personally like it. The old maps used to feel crowded.
And how many times in the shows did the Enterprise or Voyager have to dip to the side to let pass a Recluse?
The new sectors looks good, it feels good, its appropriate to the setting. Its different (from what you would expect from an aging action space MMO), but that isn't the bloody end-all of an opinion!

I have yet to experience open sector space more to see what you mean, but the walls coming down and the changes to systems appearing more realistic really makes it finally feel like Star Trek.
It was one of my earliest requests to do something about those absurd walls and cramped, boxed in sectors full of "do you want to warp?" "you don't have permission" while starships ran into invisible barriers or had to navigate towards certain walls while avoiding other walls only to end up ramming them and sliding sideways.
As long as it's possible to warp around in an instance with your team/fleet, it's a most worthwhile compromise.
I certainly prefer it this way than to those overcrowded hot spots that ships all crammed into a tight area getting stuck on each other trying to push their way out of a clusterf**k, or those wonder times when someone would zone in underneath you and the both of you would do that stupid jitter elevation to the top of the zone. And slipstreaming in high traffic routes when your ship would sway left and right like a drunk donkey to avoid other ships flying next to you... great times! :P
I like the feel of the new Sector Space as well. Feels a lot more like Star Trek to me. Traveling to a mission over a vast distance and enjoying the view as I go is actually kinda relaxing, as opposed to having to go through a loading screen to get to another small, compartmentalized section of space.
Though, if there was one thing I'd change, I'd make it a little bit brighter so I can actually see the hull texture on my ships.

I love it. It feels like traveling through space and not just a narrow sector corridor. I know the other players are out there, but me and my ship are alone against the universe. Perfect.
I also like it better this way. Feels a lot better than being stuffed into a shoe box, and never being quite sure if there was any point to using slipstream.

One of the biggest things about space is just how freakin' much of it there is. The amount of emptiness between one celestial body and another, one ship and another... these are vast distances. Naturally you'll find hubs such as ESD where there are more people docked, but in a game centralized around exploration the subsequent exploring of the vastness of space, it makes more sense in its current form.
As long as I can get a whole (20 would be better for large fleets) team into one instance to go from one area to another, I'll be happy.
How stingy is the server about opening new instances? For example, if on a team with 4 or 5 people, and you leave Sol, will it open a new instance if they are all almost full, or just dump the 4 team members into different Beta Quadrant zones?
Does that mean we're getting a revamped Exploration system soon?
I hope some of these changes will lead into that !
One of my characters stumbled across and Unknown Nebula in the Delta quadrant. I went over to check it out, and it was a crafting materials node, but I could easily see them putting missions in on some of these nodes.
Perhaps once we're done fighitng the big bads, we'll get into boldly going...
At this point I am:
1) Neutral about space being vast. 25 ships per instance seems low, considering in FFXI I participated in 300 person battles on a PS 2.
2) Space may be dark, but this is Star Trek, I should be able to see how cool my ship looks when traveling at warp.
3) I miss the old spacelane indicators. They were to me a core part of the Look and Feel of the game.

This is one of the things I really like about the new map(s). I was cruising along and saw what appeared to be a comet, approached it and sure enough "Unknown Comet" popped up. It also was a crafting mats node, but it was intriguing and exciting to find something like that. I have also heard reports of wrecked ships, though I haven't found one yet. Then again it's the small details like these that I really appreciate, that 'oh I should go see what that is' feeling.
