I'm not saying you're wrong, but the rules of the "real world" don't always apply to Star Trek canon. Go rewatch VOY 7x03, which contains not just one scene of them using this technique, but TWO separate occasions of its use. Admittedly, it's used in a Shuttle vs. Shuttle environment in this episode. But it's still a canon reference, and the primary reason for its inclusion as part of the Pilot Specialization.
Ok, I want to be able to upgrade, maybe even evolve,my BOffs to a higher rarity, and am even willing to allow for the fact that they may actually devolve into some giant guppy/salamander.
What? It happened in an episode of Voyager, to Paris and Janeway. They even had baby guppies. It's canon.
My real point, just because it made it into the shows doesn't make it a good idea. Even Bannon Braga called that episode a "royal, steaming stinker."
"Logic is a little tweeting bird chirping in a meadow. Logic is a wreath of pretty flowers which smell BAD." - Spock
You want something canon that the devs screwed up and should fix? How about confusing Tinman and gekli.
Because Tinman was the living organism bred to be a space faring vessel; the gekli was entirely different.
And yet, in STO, it's gekli that are the living vessel, and tinman is....a non-combat pet? I don't know, I can't recall ever seeing Tinman in STO.
I only know that some writer/developer confused the two when developing the bits of content which include gekli, and didn't bother to reference the source material.

It is something I've been wondering about...
Is this an ability for those that have some piloting skills?
Is this an ability for those that do not have piloting skills?
And hey, I've got a video showing where the Nanite Transformers in ISA need shields. I don't know how long I was stuck in that thing...er...yeah...might not have looked so silly if I could have said I was shield scraping.

The point I am trying to make that if something happened in the show it is canon, but that is not enough to bring it in the game.
Cryptic disagrees on that stance. It includes as much of the Star Trek material as possible. Even the Dauntless and the Galaxy-X made it into the game!
And - there are quite a lot of fans that like this.
Of course there are also fans that have their head canon and refuse to see anything outside of it making it into the game. But that's their problem.
If that makes you angry, I recommend jumping into your Undine Bio-Cruiser and blowing up some Borg Cubes. Those 10 seconds should help you putting things into perspective.

It requires no piloting skills to scrape someone with your shields.
But doing it so your ship doesn't get damaged but his does - that requires skill.

Sure, and they bring a ship from the show that nobody had a good look at and we can discuss in the forum what is fore and aft.
Shield scrapping could work as a skill, if we add collision damage to it. Scrapping gives you buff, bumping into your target gives you a debuff and you loose some EC for repair costs. If it could work that way, it would separate the boys from the men.
We can already bump into objects, unlike other games where you have ghost characters and can walk through each other, so why not a collision mechanic? That would bring real pilot skill into the game.
Still, I think we may end up with a kind of melee combat with space ships. Don't like it. What is much closer by than any star ship can be, is my wallet, but I cannot reach it. They can bring in the game what they like, I am not going to pay for that nonsense.

How much EC for getting your ship repaired after it has blown up for the 3rd time by the Crystalline Entity?
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
No, he is right. Because something weird happens in an obscure scene somewhere in a tv episode, it doesn't make it canon. That isn't enough. Something in a TV episode is in most cases seen once and next forgotten and never paid attention to again. This is a game, if it is a feature and if player uses it all the time, we will see it all the time.
I did see the Voyager once enter atmosphere and land on a planet. It might be possible but at the same time it is not possible. When it was landed it was standing on 4 retractable struts coming out of the hull. So the whole saucer was counter weighted by the hull and the nacelles. First this would give the spaceship a point of gravity in the back of the construction. That is terrible for aerodynamics. It would also mean there is a counter weight in the back of the construction. What kind of design is that for a space ship.
Shield and hull scrapping. You don't want the enemy that close by. What is the point of all your weapons, if you still have to rely on that kind of gimmicks. Take away that secondary deflector and give us a ram. Easier to craft too, oh wait, we cannot make melee weapons.
They have antigravity thrusters, your argument is invalid.
Still, I think we may end up with a kind of melee combat with space ships.
It seems that's your real fear here.
That someone will insist on playing a "melee only" space build.
Which would be ludicrous, if not for the trolls and RPers who will insist that because the ability is in-game or canon then the build is legit. Personally, I wouldn't blame the DPSer or two who manages to break 10k+ with that ability alone.

Nothing, you are death, KIA and the death don't pay. For gameplay convenience you wake up in another universe, completely the same as the one you were in and you can continue your whereabouts just as you did before you died. Stupid? Well, I don't have a better system or do you want to start all over again?
What we are dealing here with is the tension between storytelling, the shows, the movies, and game play. Any story needs be believable. The more unbelievable things happen, the worse the story gets. Do you know a good story where everything that happens is unbelievable? This also is the case for the science fiction and fantasy genre.
Gameplay is different. Some games don't need believability, card games, tetris, etc. What is there to believe? A game as STO does need it. It is to much based on the story of Startrek. Also, the game makers want us to play a game but also to tell us a story.
My concern is not that some game mechanic is overpowered or not. My concern is that with silly game mechanics the game becomes ugly. An example. The final fight in the Undine battle zone is for me an ugly game feature. It is highly unlikely that a space traveling species will send in wave after wave to become cannon fodder. I play it for the marks and the dilithium and that is it. In my view the exploration clusters were more interesting to do.
So I see two kind of players. Those that are here for the story and those that are here for the score. Some players want to finish missions rather in a couple of seconds than a couple of minutes. Is it that bad? We can troll each other of course, but I leave and let you read an article I found. It words how I feel about these matters.
don't forget the commando trait that lets you beam over commando teams for more dps when close to a ship
you got to max out commando to do it

I like to get in close and "brawl" with my ship, so I look forward to this shield scraping mechanic.
The Commando teams sounds like a nice fit too, but I seriously doubt it's usefulness. Have to remain close for an excessive amount of time to proc the benefit imo just going of the text of the ability.

You're doing a poor job explaining why, in your words, it is not enough to bring it in the game.
And the problem with this ability is....?
Figures you'd turn to hyperbole. My turn.
What is enough, and how much of this game wouldn't exist if the burden for being "canon enough" is that it appears in each and every episode?
The game would be Majel Roddenbery, and little else.
Now I understand how people can post 3-digit DPS figures in advanced queues.
Gimp build because they're casual and "play how they want," and then they self-inflict massive DPS penalties by staying at extreme range.
It's a good thing they chose to pull something from another episode, then.
Though I wouldn't hold the opinion of Braga too highly; he's no doubt a driving factor behind why the series became so bland.
