so one frustration I have with the game is the amount of gambling that's involved and the seemingly abysmal chances the regular player has of getting anything, while the rich get continually richer.
I cant at this point say im a ftp player. I've bought my scimitar, Multi-Vector, and a part of my faeht (I saw that one coming and had a LARGE dil bank to pay for the majority of that) and have even EC"d up a few keys over time. in 2 years and 50 crates opened, as well as trying for the seshar and bug ship on a couple of occasions, ive got a whole bunch of nothing with the exception of 4 ok items. but no ship. no big ticket item.
and I swear to all that is holy if I ever see another DOFF pack im going to scream.
Forking over EC on the exchange is the only 100% guaranteed way to get the good stuff.
They need to make the odds much more visible and have some tutorials on how probability works. But you still get the lucky ones that get it on their first box and scream it from the mountain tops which is heard by the unwitting and unknowing.
This is my Risian Corvette. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

so basically you blew your seed money opening lockboxes?
thats not a great way to get 'rich'.
Gambling ensures that players with little in the way of ingame resources always have a chance at striking it big and moving up into the lofty circles of the spacerich.
Gambling ensures that players with little in the way of ingame resources always have a chance at striking it big and moving up into the lofty circles of the spacerich.
Not on lock boxes. What this game needs is a Space Lottery. A real Lottery. Then maybe one of the masses might actually become one of the Spacerich.
It's not gambling as much as doing math. I calculate what I'll get with 100's of opening on average, what I can sell that for and what price I need to buy keys or promo packs at to make a profit. If you are opening 10 it's gambling, hundreds it's math.
- You open just one box and do not get the ship.
- Someone else opens just one box and does.
How devilishly unfair this is! How tragic! How cruel! If we listen carefully, we can hear the EBIL Dev Team going, "Mua-ha-ha-ha!!". As, once again!, our brave hero is denied the prize which is so rightfully his!
Oh cruel Fates! To lure in one so young with an ephemeral promise of power and then gleefully slap this wondrous creation from his grasp! To be condemned for all Eternity to face the mighty foes of PvE with an ordinary T6 ship! The horrifying anguish is nigh on unbearable for our brave heroic Captain.
But it gets worse, Gentle Reader! Far worse! For some other undeserving, merely mortal player opens a second box! Inside, a second jewel of a ship! Does the owner of two JHSS do the right thing and give this magnificent man o' war to the one player in all the lands whose possession of such would set right all the wrongs of this afflicted planet? So that starving children may eat? So all the cute animals can be saved from extinction? And all the icky ones banished? Why no, Gentle Reader!
The vile villain who owns two of the very most precious thing ever created in all the multiverse elects to place the second ship in the Auction House! For profit! How dare he? The very idea that someone would stoop so low as to earn thirty pieces of silver from the suffering and grief of a fellow STO player! The worst part? It isn't even REAL MONEY!
I must stop here! I can go no further! The rampaging emotions brought about by my bearing this horrid tale of woe are too near to laying me low! I beg your leave to depart now, Gentle Reader. Good night! Good night! Parting is such a bittersweet sorrow!
I shall be forced to console myself by gazing down upon the Great Unwashed from the Command Deck of my brand new JHSS! Which I purchased off the Exchange less than an hour ago.
It is indeed good to be the King! But better to be rich enough in Not Real Moneys to buy an imaginary ship!

Along with all the good and bad associated with F2P. Don't talk to me about "F2P done right" because most games don't and see it as a different means on fleecing people.
When F2P started being all the rage, I was amused by most thinking they'd be playing these games in general and truly be on equal footing with the spenders. You guys were seriously deluded.

The game has to turn a profit to survive. F2P is a marketing gimmick.
This business model is simple. Give away 80%. Give 15% the option to get something better - I'm speaking of C-Store ships, fleet ships etc. And for those willing to spend more, offer a few select shinies that have an exclusivity at a premium.
It's why we don't all use Zunes. Or all drive Hyundai's. Or live on someone elses dime.
Compared to other games, $20-40 for a ship is nothing.
But to your point - I LIKE THE R&D SHIPS. I buy the packs to craft with. Getting a ship is a massive frikin bonus. Yes, I got the Sheshar - sold for 500 million ec. Helped get my 7 alts to XIV gear. Yes, I got the T6 Jemmiy bug. Spent about $120 in the process.
And I'm helping keep the lights on here. You can play this game without paying a penny.

Typing with the Caps lock on does not improve the strength or validity of your statement. Nor do the casinos actively market themselves to poor people. People with no money probably won't spend any on a casino.
I also am fairly sure if you had ever gotten a JHAS or JHSS or Shesher, you wouldn't be so self righteous about this. Which is why I find people who post all this "Gambling Bad!" stuff so amusing. Because the second they win a JHSS, they immediately disappear from the ranks of the do-gooders.
I am grateful for the LockBoxes. As long as people buy Keys and spend Real Money on Zen, I get to keep playing STO free of charge. I also get to outfit my chars in some really nifty gear, thanks to the greediness and lack of self control of other players.

I agree. I am by nature not a fan of gambling, and I wish cryptic would publish the odds of winning in a visible location in-game. Even your state lotto prints the odds on the back of the ticket.

All the comments like "I'm paying for everyone else to play. This game wouldn't be here if I didn't spend $120 on keys" are silly.
This game is run by a huge multi-national corporation. Get a grip of yourselves. Your ship purchase has not made the difference between this game living or dying.
Hiding one's own selfishness and greed by faking altruism where a public audience is available is elevating hypocrisy to an art form.
None of you who are grumbling here about LockBoxes would give a rodent's donkey about this if you had gotten a JHSS from one. Your loudly public concern for your fellow players 'being taken advantage' of only extends as far as someone paying attention to you. Your sole complaint about this is you didn't get the cookie. All other considerations are really unimportant to you. Because, as usual, it is always all about you. In fact you haven't had a positive thought about another person in years, if ever.
All I am doing is pointing it out to the audience. So the charlatan do-gooders can't con them into thinking these self same noble scions of chicanery are the good guys here.
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
I opened 10 Romulan Packs and got 2 bug ships. Figured I'm never getting another box ship. Gave one to my kid, the other is still boxed in my inventory. I still can't decide what to do with it.
I've bought 10 R&D packs... they are worth it just for the R&D stuffies. I'm pumping out Omni beams like mad without spending any dilithium. I might buy some more, but not for the ship.
Want a guaranteed T6 ship? C-store has lots of them.
Lastly, I never got what the big deal with the bug ship was anyway. I PvP'd against my kid with his and me in my Fleet Avenger. Scores were almost always 15-0 for the Avenger, and he's not a bad player. He's usually parses 2nd dps in STFs.

Huge multinational corporations aren't charities. Generating revenue from people who pursue prizes is a substantial source of revenue given the investment versus returns. Why would they bother with the practice if this wasn't the case? Maybe you can invent a crazy conspiracy theory about how they gather energy from the disappointment of shills who buy keys and don't get the prize.
If those people are seeking validation for giving their money away why blast them with one of your bitter little sermons? It must really have bothered you and your champion complex that someone was contributing more to this game than you.
With your blubbering on the forums and crummy power-pointesque sig surely someone should have recognized your contributions. Are you too lazy to remove the sig or do you actually think it looks good? It's like a busted string of Christmas lights in May.
To all you "Hurr they need to make money crowd" so why is it that companies like Blizzard are super rich without squeezing their customers dry? (while maintaining a huge crowd base)
I'll give you a hint: It's called paying for content and/or a sub based model.
Even EVE online which sits at the other edge of the PVE-PVP spectrum (being PVP hardcore) simply does better because the players get more content for their buck. (the expansions being free even)
Marvel Heroes has a cool mechanic for their lockboxes whereby you get a collectible item every time you open a box (similar to the Lobi mechanic), if you open enough boxes, you're guaranteed to have enough to cash in for one of the big prizes. I think there should always be a failsafe in these sorts of systems, and this is from someone who opened one doff pack and got a bug to sell.

1.) Shut down the exchange and restrict trading to where other players and give stuff away for free.
2.) The Devs should go through everyone's account and make sure everyone has equal EC, Equal Dil, equal everything.
3.) Instead of playing the game, everyone should line up at their home planets everyday and get a handout of one per each item, no more, no less.
4.) Reduce the ability for different ships configurations, so everyone had the same DPS.
