Species matters?

Hello! :)

Different species have different traits lists to choose from, and fixed traits.

Speaking in min\max terms, what are the best species?
What are the must have traits?

I'm talking about the captain, not the boff.

Thank you very much :D

From a strictly min max standpoint what build/class are you trying to go for and pve or pvp? Cloaking romulans/remans are nice. Aliens have the ability to pick and choose your traits (my personal favorite by the way). Humans are really nice as are joined trill and borg.

Basically the question boils down to survivability or dps... energy, torp, or exotic... ground or space?

I'd recommend Alien for the +1 selectable trait. At least that one will never become obsolete, you can always switch it.

impossible question because you give us nothing to work with

There is no BEST generic character to fit all options
    Jellico....Engineer ground.....Da'val Romulan space Sci
Saphire.. Science ground......Ko'el Romulan space Tac
    Leva........Tactical ground.....Koj Romulan space Eng

JJ-Verse will never be Canon or considered Lore...It will always be JJ-Verse

    Ok, as you have noticed I haven't given out any information at all;
I haven't because I didn't knew it was pertinent to the question.

I was hoping this argument could be disputed from a more generic standpoint.

In my case, I will create a sci officer for pve.
I will fly sci ships to try some space magic: I suppose that classify as exotic damage.

Going deeper, if not a particular species, are there any generic must have traits?

    Hello irishxp,

Quite obviously it is pertinent to the question!

I think garaks31 gave good advice a few posts back, as have the other posters.

Though if I may, I think just try "playing around" a bit. The "Let's have fun!" school of trait building. :-)

Choose your species because you think it looks cool, or you've always liked the stoic nature of the Vulcans, or because you think the spots on Trills look beautiful.

Slot your traits in a similar way. Have some fun.

At this stage of the game, everything is new and doesn't matter that much, so enjoy it. The species doesn't matter as much to a casual player, you'll probably have a better idea of what you want after you experiment, and traits can be swapped in and out.

Many people will slot every Space Trait that they can early game over Ground, especially Warp Theorist which gives a useful boost over everything. Ground is typically easier to survive early on than space.

Sorry - I'll let other people handle the technical specifics. But to echo above - the more that you give to work with, the more specific the response will be.

    Thanks, TheDancingFox

Okay so now that I know... my personal opinion what I like for sci/sci is I prefer aliens mainly because of the +1 slot, which I find invaluable.

    Space:

Since you're doing "space magic" which yes is pretty much exotic, you're going to want to slot any and all traits that effects particle generators and or exotic damage or boosts your aux energy. The aux energy boost is nice but you'll later be able to boost is well over 125 without using traits.. but for now go for it especially at the beginning.

Since you want to do "space magic" you'll eventually most likely move away from energy weapons and into a mostly torpedo ship, meaning look for traits that boost torpedo damage.

    Ground
Ground the question is, do you want to be more of a healer, damage dealer, or CC. For ground you can pretty much do all three to be honest.

As mentioned above a lot of people skip ground traits early on for space traits, but remember that you can shift them now at will, it's annoying time consuming but you can.

As I said I prefer aliens over anything else. Most Borg or Trill are nice because they give you energy boosts, which if you go Exotic/Torpedo is nice but hardly a must have. ALiens allow you to pick and choose your traits and ignore the ones you don't want. You won't always get the best pick out there necessarily, but they all function rather well

Without getting into lockbox traits... I'm going to say the traits you're going to want is astrophysicist and conservation of energy. From crafting at level 15 you also gets traits, and you'll want to get sciene and torpedo to 15 asap to get particle manipulator and kinetic precision.

Thank you fellow captains for your answers!
I felt from some reply that you think I just started to play the game.
    This is not true :)

That said, I've been mostly a casual player and I'm not *that* much into game mechanics.
Casual in terms of time I've been able to dedicate to the game, not casual in mindset.

I've already made a few characters back when I could manage more than one officer ;)
I mostly play Eng in escorts, I'm a defensive type of player and Eng abilities are really my bread but I like my ship moving fast!

I want to take a step further into the game, catching the opportunity given by Delta Recruitment, and try my hand in science (which is IHMO the most difficult to build).
I played my share of fun characters, or better said "for fun" character; now I was looking for some insights about the best traits people usually slot and accordingly which were the species most used and why.

For exemple, ladymyajha, you are saying Alien is the one you prefer "for this particular build" because of the +1 slot.
I find I like Alien for the same, but I also think Alien is one of the best species out there for everything.
Maybe there's always something better for a particular case, like Caitian\Ferasan on ground.
What do you think about it?
I mean, generally speaking, the game is bound to have something which is usually better then the others.
If not, I would see many more Pakled around :P

One well-rounded option for Federation captains, if you are looking for a species that is decent in both space and on the ground, that doesn't get mentioned often is Bolian.

Bolians have Efficient Captain, Accurate, Elusive and Astrophysicist available for space combat. They also have Lucky, Resilient, Teamwork and many more good ground traits as well.

The effect of most free traits is quite negligable, so it really doesnt matter that much. If you do get several lock box traits you run out of slots anyway before you have a hard mtime choosing.

I might agree, basic traits are not gamechangeing but if I'm playing without Efficient and Warp Theorist I feel like I'm doing something wrong :P
