Star Wars: I can't speak for the prequel trilogy, but the original trilogy is a space opera, sort of a medieval "rescue the damsel in distress" type of thing. Think about Rigoletto without Luciano Pavarotti, or even Lord of the Rings, but in the future, with lasers, and robots, and that kind of stuff.
Star Trek: The Original Series started as a space western, but without John Wayne. It is just as simple as that. But by The Next Generation, it had morphed into more an intellectual exploration.
Deep Space Nine: The entire series is nothing more than one long bar fight.
If you show her Star Wars, definitely start with the original trilogy. We had this discussion on the forums some time back and it was noted that the shocking announcements of Luke's kin in Empire and Return have zero impact if someone has viewed the prequels. (on the other hand, Kenobi & Yoda's deaths will have greater weight and the emperor will seem even more, um, insidious, if the viewer has connected with them since Phantom.)
Star Wars was an homage to the serialized sci-fi of the 1930s, 40s, and even 50s, and some of its costuming and set designs reflect this, as does the famous scrolling titles and scene changing styles.
Star Trek, on the other hand, while having western elements, was less of an homage or stereotype and in many ways was blazing new territory in sci-fi that a lot of others ended up copying. It also served, at times, as a socio-political soapbox, hoping to teach, something Star Wars has never done (except maybe an episode or two in The Clone Wars animation, I don't recall for sure).
I must show her the difference... and she has never seen star wars... so, how do I show her the difference?
*subtle facepalm*
Yes, they both take place is space.
Choose three of the more popular star trek episodes. My suggestions:
1.) from TOS 0308 - For the World is Hollow, and I have touched the Sky. <-- Classic Trek
2.) from TNG - Inner Light <--- moving, connected, well acted.
3.) from DS9 - In the Pale Moonlight <--- shows the range of what the series could do.
If you have to demonstrate the difference between the two to your wife, it is a hopeless cause. I'm guessing her mind is already made up and she is willing to disparage both of them equally.
And she does so on a daily basis.
I think the standard answer I give my wife of twenty eight years whenever this topic arises is:
"Ya know, Honey, you're exactly right. Would you like some more wine?"
So far it has not failed me. Ever. With enough wine, she gets sleepy. When she gets sleepy, she goes to bed.
When she goes to bed, she leaves me alone. I buy Zen. Everybody Happy! No problems!
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
Show her Empire Strikes Back first and foremost, then Jedi if she's still interested.
*Never show anyone the prequels*
For Trek, I'd skip over TOS (save it for later if interest is shown).
Start her out with some TNG;
"Inner Light" (as mentioned before, some great writing is on display in this one). This episode also has an excellent score and soundtrack, and shows how Star Trek can differ greatly from Star Wars.
Then go with "Yesterdays Enterprise" to pick up the pace a bit...
Finish with "Darkmok".
I've never seen Star Wars and I can tell the difference. I get my knowledge for Star Wars via memes, ad's and the odd YouTube clip. Seems to be a lot of humor and miss spellings.
But I did once watch a episode of a cartoon called Ewoks in the 90's because I was epic bored........Spock's the big hairy one, right?
Glad I could help. =3
And as Captain Kirk said to Gandalf, "Use the Force, Harry."
what if i mentioned i can not see the difference between star wars and star trek? :P
both outer space stuff, both playing on the human conditon, both have wars and politics, both have ideals, both have central characters to drive the show along.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
One is a badly-written science-fantasy story written by a hack who finally got lucky with a franchise that appealed to a bunch of socially-inept outcasts who want to feel like they're morally superior and wiser than everybody else.
The other is the same thing, but with lightsabers in it.
There's no comparison: Star Wars is amazing, Star Trek is meh. DS9 is the only series worth watching all of IMO. IF you want to show someone the great franchise that Star Wars was (before the Disney buyout and the destruction of the EU) show the movies in this order: 4-(1)-5-2-3-6. 1 is optional.

Do you often get Cars and Days of Thunder confused, as well?
Both movies with a lot of car racing, both have lead characters who are basically cartoons...

I'd either eliminate 1, or show it after 5. Otherwise, it's a little bit of a spoiler, and the short time-frame and concentration on the same few worlds kind of robs 4 of some of its original mythic sweep. (Seriously, I'm starting to think this "Galactic Empire" spans like a dozen or so worlds, and that's why we have to see a waste-planet like Tattooine so very often.)
And the movies exist as they are, independent of the often self-contradictory and occasionally very badly-written EU. Nuking it was the only possible way for the movies to move forward; otherwise, any movies made would have had to follow the novels as written, and who's going to pay ten bucks or more to see a movie whose every plot twist and line of dialog they already know?

Not exactly one in Sci-Fi, and second is a fairy tale with glowing swords and Force-magic.

I only liked the X-wing series, good series, the others kinda throw it out of whack.
Not exactly one in Sci-Fi, and second is a fairy tale with glowing swords and Force-magic.
Not exactly. One is an exploration based sci-fi franchise based in a time where socialism has become accepted and humanity has united against a common enemy. Then turned the enemy into friends and decided to understand the universe with each other, with a few hostilities along the way. And some fun Q Continuum stuff!:D
The second is a classic fantasy epic thrown into a sci-fi setting with great care and sculpting, were humans are a wide spread, separated race that lives together with other, more exotic aliens. In this universe is a radiation like energy that many people have the ability to control. They serve either as evil overlords or beneficial peacekeepers. And some really cool, non-powered people have fun and beat up the powered ones as well.
Sufficiently explained science in indistinguishable from magic. The difference between the Deflector Dish of the Enterprise and Gandalf's Staff is pretty miniscule in terms of storytelling.
"You shall not pass!" is pretty much the same as "Polarized Gravimetric Distortion Field."
Just because one sounds more logical and more smarter, and sounds more scientific, does not mean it actually is.

why would i need to explain when iconians is doing it for me. :P a title is just a title. cars are the same under the hood except the logo, yet what difference does it make between the logo?

I've been told to TRIBBLE the prequel if she's not gonna be hardcore or anything like that.
Although Yoda being a whirrling Dervish makes up for Anakin whining.

Perhaps the greatest punch ever in Trek.

I found the answer is divorce.
LOL.
Do you also kill ant colonies with nuclear weapons:P?
Yoda's fighting is what makes it enjoyable.

That's a good order actually
I only liked the X-wing series, good series, the others kinda throw it out of whack.
pretty much. One is fantasy the other is just sci fi.

Let's not forget the running joke of killing Vorta in a variety of ways.
Every time one died, I heard this sound.
"Where monsters rampage, I'm there to take them down! Where treasure glitters, I'm there to claim it! Where an enemy rises to face me, victory will be mine!" -Lina Inverse
I'd suggest a divorce.
They are not even the same genre...
Although I seem to be the only one in my familie getting the difference.
