Is it wrong for me to prefer keeping things "Old School" for me?

mhirtescmhirtesc Member Posts: 581 Arc User
There have been several new ships and BOFF types that have come out recently, and yet I just don't see myself really making any major leap over to DR stuff except in a very few exceptions such as the Talaxian and Hierarchy BOFFS (and I only got them because of their Space-based racial passives). None of the T6 ships seem to be a step up from my T5-U Wells that I've had since 2013. Even the upcoming Command ships (as jazzy as the Fed ones look) don't have a Commander level Sci seat (I love my GW3), so it looks like I'll be holding onto my Dil/Zen.

So, aside from the two BOFF races I mentioned, I don't find any real thrill with Intel or Command type stuff. I only bothered to get the Samsan because it's console seems useful.

Maybe I have that nagging sense of impending obsolescence due to years of playing WoW where having that "shiny new thing" was mandatory if you wanted to keep playing.

I'm not using any specalist BOff powers on my Guardian. Just the basic Tac/Engie/Sci BOff powers.

I only grinded the samsan for the trait and console. Going back to my fleet t5u Gal X. I found the new t6 boff stuff to be nothing special. Maybe they are useful in pvp but i don't pvp. What i find interesting is i killed mobs faster in my X.

Got my Scimi and avenger, stayin' with 'em.

No commander Boffs or Intel Boffs for me (at least right now)...keeping it simple.

What I don't need is MORE buttons to push on specific occasions and cooldowns to keep track of, let alone even more special abilities - I have enough for now to keep me busy.

I hadn't got any of the newer ships, other than the Breen Carrier. My only T6. I hadn't even bother to upgrade mine to a T5U. Several ships I use can't be upgraded at this time. So I hadn't even bothered with it.

Other than the Tac Intell officer I bought from the officer vendor. I only use her some so far to play around with it. Got the Kobali officer, but I hadn't used her yet. I hope so this weekend if I get to my Fed. As this weekend, I'm more focused on my Romulan and KDF. As last weekend I was more focused on my Fed.

Nope. I stick with my D'Deridex, my Odyssey and Steamrunner, my Fleet Corsair, and my Fleet B'Rel.

I just recently was able to upgrade my Aegis set to Mk XIV quality, along with rolling a particle Exciter ultra-violet with [Stealth] to help me out with my Warbird hangar.

I've been using the dilithium exchange to buy zen whenever I've felt the need to get an upgrade token for an 'old school' ship, and I've been holding onto my stipend for whenever something interesting comes down the pipe.

The Intel ships have no interest for me. The Dyson Science Destroyers have no interest for me. I almost bought the Constellation during a ship sale but I was pretty irritated with the game at the time and decided not to.

I recently created a character on KDF to specifically fly Breen ships, and I continue to offer to buy the Andorian Escort 3-pack if Cryptic allows us to have playable Aenar captains. But until that day comes, no sale.

I was actually kind of relieved that the Command ships held no interest for me. I've been trying to get Command spec points on one character, and Intelligence spec points on my Romulan character. And given how alt-unfriendly the game is currently, I was pretty happy that Cryptic disappointed me with their new shiny object.

Because that just means more saving of my Zen stipend, and more time to vacation at Argala whenever I feel the need to grind spec points, in addition to regularly upgrading my equipment to Mk XIV.

If you are missing out on the new shiny, so am I, and I have been for quite a while. Still, I hold out the hope that someday Cryptic will allow me to acquire a T6 version of my favorite ships without price gouging me despite being a loyal STO player for many years.

And to be perfectly honest I hope Cryptic continues to disappoint me in the short term so I can stockpile more of my Zen stipend and dilithium.

When I first bought my Phantom, I was going for the usual BFAW3 -> APO3, etc. Then I decided to try out Intel a bit, after all. And I can tell you, Phantom with OSS3 + SS3 + Reciprocity = pure gold!

It took a bit of getting used to (like realizing this ship was made for CrtD, in the above setup); but once I adjusted, an entirely new world opened up for me!

Command I'm not so sure of. But Intel? I'd say, definitely give it a chance!

I think OSS is so far the only new power I use with regularity. It is a low level power that works well inside the regular power rotations since it doesn't share cooldowns with anythnig else you usually have.

But to benefit from that, it requires having an intel ship.

I think SS is the only other power I think I'd regularly use.
Kinetic Magnet and Ionic Turbelence are also good for Torpedo/Science builds. More resist debuffs are always great.

On the ground... I am tempted to try out the Intel and Command abilities perhaps for my BOFFs. I never bring Tactical BOFFs because I think they suck, maybe I can re-use them as Intel or Command. But I don't do ground content often enough to have bothered with this yet.

Pls stay with the stuff you like and with what you think you are good at.

I have all Tier 6 ships and intel hocus-pocus from the DR pack. After I unlocked the ship traits I found myself quickly back on my tier 5 lock box ships with gladly 0 intel abilities.

Only ship I kept was the Dauntless which replaced my Wells. :)

Just personal preference.. The way it should be.

I was one of those who made the mistake of buying the Delta Rising Pack on the back of the success (in terms of enjoyment for me personally) of Legacy of Romulus.

As such, I got the DR ships and boffs etc. The boffs can't be trained in T3 Intel skills until each toon is at the required Specialization level anyway, and I'm in no rush. The space passives are useful but not excessively so for anyone with a large bridge crew. The Intel ships are a mixed bag: my KDF tac is in the MatHa which is great; the ROM tac is in the Faeht.

A couple of the Intel skills are cute, but not necessarily a game changer (for me at least).

The rest of the ships are back to T5U. I will be grinding the "Ship Traits" for various toons but it's a case of "two days, get the trait, back in the proper ship". As I only play PvE, I've found so far that it's now about traits (ship, and R&D specially) and Spec Points that are the game changers, not the ships or the equipment Mk levels which are now a 'secondary concern'.

At the end of the day however, I'm refuse to fly around the galaxy in a Tron-inspired serving spoon.

Nothing wrong at all with old school thinking or playing. I do it. And as unapologetically as possible. "New! and Improved!" is usually neither. Rather, it is some game designer looking around and then slapping a new coat of paint onto someone else's ideas, adding in one minor twist, and telling all of the rest of us how cool it is. Oh boy. One more in a never ending series of dodgy knock offs.

Been playing some form of computer game since I purchased my first Commodore C64 way back when. Haven't seen anything truly new or different in a very long time. What I have seen is how...homogenized computer and console games have become. After awhile they all start to look the same.

Looked at the Intel stuff pretty hard. Decided since Section 31, the Obsidian Order, and the Tal Shiar are so disreputable in the series and films, I'd pass. Then there are the prices of that stuff. pwe/cryptic is surely proud of them, aren't they? Well then, I wouldn't want mere money to come between them and their precious creations, so again I'll pass.

I keep things old school on my one Fed character by dressing all my boffs in TOS outfits and using the Constitution bridge pack. I'm also going to eventually upgrade a bunch of Type 2 old school phasers and distribute them among the boffs.

Best way to win at STO?

      JUST HAVE FUN!

The T6 powers are cool, but in no means mandatory for content. Kilo for Kilo, some T5U ships have better stats then the equivalently T6 ship. Better hull, better console and boff layout. So a solid T5U build will beat out out a sloppy T6 build.

All in all, do what is good for you and your crew.

Unless the T6 spams the OSS/IT/SS combo.

Every time I gain a specialization point, I'll spend it, but I'm not grinding for them. I also haven't changed my build...same ship, same equipment from three updates ago and same skills.

I also haven't spent a penny in as long as I can remember.

Got a Scryer and Phantom recently for my main, mostly for the traits... And because I'm a ship hoarder (please, send help). That said what layout do I use on them? Same as my Defiant retrofit and T5U Luna class, just with Intel team slotted to make use of that extra Boff power. If it's not broken, no reason to fix it. And I'll still probably go back to the Luna soon anyway, because 11 consoles slots.

Of course not, play how you want.

Ships and abilities help, but at the end of the day it's the player themselves that determine the affectiveness of any ship.
