I am not grand Cryptic marketing guru, but imho this would help them. It's like a standard lottery. If you want to have run successfull lottery game you need winners. Not so often but from time to time you need to show winner who get "everything for nothing". It boosts interest people to buy tickets in hope they will win too - as they see it is possible to win. The trick is obvious. It is still rng gamble with very small chance to win, but it gives people hope.
In case of Cryptic. The chance to win ship is very small as we all know. So with current rng loot table to give - let's say - from 3 to 5 free keys would did not harm them. Most of people would get "trash" - well for low level players they would have chance to get some helpful and usable stuff - only a few would get ships. Imho it would boost interest to buy few more keys for zens and it would help to change a little image of Cryptic. Look we are not greedy Ferengi we offer something for our playes for free.
But you know... :-)
Which "Standard Lottery" gives away tickets for Free to show a winner who got "everything for nothing"?
People who open boxes do seem to win ships on occasion thus why we have the "xxxx@xxxx just won a Benthan/Xindi/ etc ship" that pop up on the in-game notifications.
You can still buy keys to unlock boxes if you aren't a paid member or a LTS, I have an LTS for that game and have had since it came out. I have an LTS for STO as well, IMO, this could happen in STO, would be a good way for them to boost sales of subscriptions (maube not the best choice of words).
Anyway, just my thoughts.
EDIT: they also give you 10% off their in game store prices as well.
I know. Personally I came here from a game where is communication between players and devs perfect, there are no lockboxes and no bitter sweet taste about game business model. But my post was about STO and current situation. I personally think all this event "we will put all lockboxes into game but you hve to buy key for everyone" laughable, but it is just my personal opinion.
I still think there would be pretty working model to give something little for free and finallly get more money than in this Ferengi one. But I think this is something beyong imagination of Cryptic management. :-)
You know, reading the hardcore marketing campaign for lockboxes on Facebook right now is...really REALLY sad...
Quite frankly, this is the hardest they've ever tried to market these things. They're spotlighting EVERY lockbox and the items inside them and the lobi store until the 29th. This is just...the funniest thing I've ever read. I'm surprised they're not spamming twitter, the forum and the website with this as well. C'mon Cryptic, gotta push out the marketing more! :P
I open boxes with the mindset of getting Lobi plus a prize. I also primarily open Tal Shiar or Temporal Lockboxes, just my preference, but getting a plasmonic leech to sellon the exchange is always nice.

Yeah , it would be nice if the blog would mention that you're getting older lockboxes , but they don't offer the chance to win the old ships (Galor et al) .
The Lobi Crystal Consortium (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Quark Enterprises) has announced that they are taking the Delta Expedition Lock Box away soon! Now’s your opportunity to open one of these boxes for a chance at some spectacular prizes. Read more details about it here.
can we have an option to auto refuse lock-box pickup please? these useless chunks of garbage are just cluttering up the inventory. it is annoying to have to watch druing a battle what you pick up and it is equally annoying to have to kick those thins in the trash afterwards.
if someone wants to spend loads of money for a chance to get a ship fine, but in my eyes the low chance to get one of the worthwhile box rewards makes them a pure ripoff, nothing more.

If they aren't cardassian gold boxes don't bother. Gold boxes actually gave you a pretty good chance at a Galor. I usually make back about 10-50% of the EC for a key off the exchange not a very good return but gotta have that 300 lobi for T6 intel officers...
There may be a few T5 lock box ships worth getting, and the last lock box offerings are t6, but I'm really not seeing the motivation beyond that to participate for a chance at a bunch of ships that are slowly slipping behind the proverbial pack.
The devs mention new 'free players' not having an opportunity at lock boxes? With the drop rate so low when a lock box is opened, free players really don't get a 'chance' or 'opportunity' with lock boxes anyhow, since farming the dil to convert to zen to buy a master key would honestly take a 'new to the game' player a *long* time to aquire. A random key dropping at least every now and then would be closer to an honest opportunity.

How likely am I to get anything worth 1125 carnival coins out of 10 boxes?
