STO is troll heaven

shazia9191shazia9191 Member Posts: 308 Arc User
Look, I know that there is always going to be a higher number of unsavory players in a F2P game. I realize that, and I'm more or less at peace with it, but this is completely ridiculous.

I STOPPED RPing/social gaming in STO a LONG time ago because I was harassed so often by trolls -- and I don't even need to name and shame here, we all know exactly who these idiots are -- and I decided to focus on the game itself instead. Fast forward to DR and the aftermath. I don't care for the increased grind, I stopped spending money on the game in protest of the changes, but I still feel invested in STO, so what do I do? I decide to try my hand in some roleplay, some social gaming, after a long hiatus.

Nothing's changed. Yes, I could (and do) have private events on my starbase/bridge, but is that the norm now? Should we have to vacate the public social zones now because a few players are allowed to run rampant with no repercussions? Cryptic/PWE, you have made this game -- aside from the mission content -- all but unplayable and unejoyable to me (this isn't a point of debate, by the way, as I note that "unplayable" and "unenjoyable" are 100% subjective to my point of view, not objective, so I do not need, nor will I, comment on that further), but you seem to be hell bent on making EVERY SINGLE aspect of this game miserable for the players, except, of course, the few that get some kind of sick enjoyment in others' misery.

Can we actually get a GM, or, I don't know, support ticket staff that actually READS and RESPONDS relevantly to tickets filed? The automatic support e-mail doesn't inspire confidence in the system as it is.

Public zones are just that. Think about it. If you RP in a public zone, you know you're at risk of being trolled. Some people are trolls just for the lulz. Some people troll cuz they don't understand RP and it freaks them out. I one time trolled a guy on Bajor. I didn't know he was RP. Once it dawned on me, I sent an email to him apologizing. He accepted. But the point is, as I'm not a RP, I did not understand. If you want to RP with friends, I would suggest making a private channel for it and making it invite only. But if you RP in public channels, sadly you should expect to be trolled.

Ignore feature and invite blocks are your friends.

As for RPing, you carry on your conversation via PM in the chat window, instead of using Local, Zone, and other public channels. Don't give potential trolls and ret@rds any breadcrumbs to follow.

    Sorry, cheap joke.

But, isn't it relatively easy to make a private chat channel where you can RP at will?

Also, logic is only the beginning.

Aheh. I love the fact that I'm enforcing the rules that I've become a cheerleader for the trolls. Do you know why that post was removed? Do you know my history of having to deal with trolls?

If the answer is no to either I'd kindly suggest you find out before making any assumptions. Let me be very clear - it doesn't matter what fleet you belong to, what group you belong to the forum rules are there for a reason and they will be enforced when we see violations.

I've played this game for more than two years and cant think of a single time i've felled 'trolled' or upset by another player.

I dont think that the game is a troll haven, I think that you need to lighten up.

To be fair, you spend hours and hours talking about nothing in ESD zone chat daily, I think you are most likely a bit more desensitized than the OP.

I thought it was so cool that you took that noble route early on there stating that you understood that things were subjective...but before you've even finished that sentence (one Hell of a long sentence) you're already speaking for other players. I just don't get this.

Yes, it is far easier for us that do not want the distraction of what is often the most horrible RP ever done in a game...just to ignore those folks. Those folks on the other hand, well, yeah - they're subject to all sorts of shenanigans from other players.

The thing is, just because a player believes something meets a certain threshold does not mean that it meets the requirement from Cryptic/PWE to be classified as such. Also, you're never going to hear back on any of those reports. But just because somebody does not like something that somebody is doing, doesn't necessarily make it any form of harassment or the like. By going into a public area, one accepts a certain level of the public being there. No one player has a right to be in an area more than another player does.

So if one does not wish to be subject to the whims of the public, well - one shouldn't be in a public place, eh?

So all of that has to be taken into account in any expectations of action being taken...yeah?

I don't RP, but I like eavesdropping on those who do! There's some pretty good storylines some people come up with (others are just out there, like the Gorn & Ferengi lovers' quarrel I read once quite some time ago < shivers >)

If the RPers get forced into the shadows, I'd personally say it takes a lot away from the game's atmosphere. The trolls should indeed be hit with the ignore list, they add absolutely nothing worth a damn anyway to the game. But no RPer should be forced to a private channel/map because they're being harassed into it.

It's not just about the chat window. In order to block out all the disco ball graphics, the party poppers, the fire extinguishers, I have to set my graphics down to like nothing. Why on Earth should I have to ruin the look of the game in order to accommodate trolls?

But you know what? I guess it doesn't matter now does it? By being allowed to visit their studios Cryptic has pretty much signed off on you and your fleet haven't they? They've said in deed what most of us have suspected for years. They're not going to stop you. They're not going to correct you. You won. After long last, you really, really won. STO is yours and no one is going to do a thing about it. Congratulations.

I have never seen any of these rpers out there, As for Role play, there are too types the normal and then the erper. Pessonaly I haven't run into may of the later but I agree they should do that in there on SB of ship NOT in a public space, There are kids that play this game. If I were to find an erper on Drozana or esd I would gladly drop a tell to a couple of fleets that have the resources to deal with it.

It might. If you have been a very naughty captain.

Jokes aside, even bloody awful ones like that, why not just use fleet maps?

I'd have guessed they were perfect. You have a space station with bar/social area, you have the embassy and the spire and even the mine for changes of scenery. And of course all these places are invite only so you can keep the rabble out.

Since you can pretend it's all real to begin with, you can pretend that starbase is ESD or any other base in the universe.

So what do you *want* cryptic to do about it?
Ban people for talking to you in public channels? Not gonna happen.
Ban people for using party poppers? Not gonna happen.
Ban people for jumping around and acting like a moron in your face? Not gonna happen.

Cryptic gave you all kinds of tools to do your RP.
They gave you private chat channels, where you can talk without seeing any other nonsense.
They gave you a foundry, where you can create a scene.
They gave you private areas to hang out in away from the public (fleet base, ship interiors, to name a couple). There are also areas off the beaten path that are pretty cool, not everything has to go down on earth.

You can work around the trolls easily enough. Unless your RP scenarios ALL demand being on ESD or DS9 where thousands of people come to act like 5 year olds, you should be able to enjoy RP just about anywhere else.

There isnt much more to say about it. What you call trolling (talking to you? using stupid in game toys like balloons? emoting at you? ) is largely within the TOS and not something they can punish the other people for. If the people are not doing something outside the TOS behavior policy, cryptic can't really punish them (well, they can, but it would not go over well). If they are doing something outside the TOS, report them... depending on what they said or did, if it was bad enough, they will be banned or temp-banned or at least get a stern talking to. They can't force people to RP with you. They can't even force ppl to respect your personal space in a public area.

Yes STO is a troll heaven. You can do pretty much everything you want in it. Be a racist and troll every non-white/specific religion or nation, be a neo TRIBBLE, makes your character look like Hitler, and share with the rest of the world your hatred, you can find a way to exploit something and troll people (or harass a single individual), you can create multiple account and bots to harass entire channels.

That's only a few examples I saw in this game, and I don't think anything happened. Unless perhaps when a dev gets harassed himself.

Yes, you are not supposed to do that. But in fact, you pretty much can, nobody is going to stop you. There are no CS for this game. Even less GM.
It is like having a set of rules and laws in our society, but no police at all. Good luck with that.
To be fair, you spend hours and hours talking about nothing in ESD zone chat daily, I think you are most likely a bit more desensitized than the OP.
My thoughts. Every time I'm on ESD, I can see him talk. I wonder if he ever sleep or do anything else.
Hard to be trolled when all you do is "debate" on ESD chat.
