Please feel free to kick this to another forum (e.g. Events), if appropriate.
I play a lvl 56 Fed Sci captain with an emphasis on exotic damage and enough purple boffs to go around.
I didn't do the winter event before this year, so I don't already have any of the Breen ships. I only have the one toon, so I don't need to worry about the discount bug (you have my sympathies). And I just got my 1000th Q-Pic.
I don't know which ship to get. None of them is a great fit for my play style, but none of them is so far off the mark that I could eliminate them outright, either. And I wouldn't exactly be giving up my Luna / RSV and making this hypothetical ship my daily driver.
I'm tempted by the carrier, because of the T6 perks. But I've never run a carrier before. It's also made for someone who already has Plesh Brek Heavy Raider.
The Chel Gret Warship seems like a more-maneuverable Ambassador-class, which I'd be happy with, despite losing Tyken's Rift from my second SCI boff (compared to my Luna).
Then there's the Plesh Brek, which I can assign boffs basically like the carrier. But its other stats remind me of the Akira-class, which I was never able to figure out.
Personally, in your situation, I would probably get the carrier, with the idea that even if the ship does not suit you (not becoming your 'daily driver' as you put it), the T6 starship trait is portable. However, it's really only a useful trait if you play a carrier or some other kind of ship with a "combat pet" (such as the Pathfinder's Aeroshuttle or perhaps a ship with saucer separation). The other two ships are T5 and so do not have starship traits.
Gotta say, I find this very helpful - i've got enough Q's to unlock one of the ships and haven't been able to choose which i'd rather.
Honestly, I'd plump for the Chel, but with the carrier, as you say, there are the T6 attributes, and it unlocks for other toons (unlike the other two currently), which would give me T6 ships for my Kling and Rom toons (both level 50+), as well as for my Fed-Sci and Fed-Tac.
So, thank you for the advice - I found it helpful, even though i'm not the starter of the thread!
If I had to choose only one Breen ship it would be the warship, not quite a cruiser and not quite an escort, but great fun to fly and upgradeable to T 5-U. I've been having fun with the carrier using a mix of pets, but I can see myself jumping back into the Chel Grett as soon as I've filled the specialisation tree on the carrier.
"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." — Lazarus Long --->Get the Forums Enhancement Extension!
The short version, at least from my perspective, would be to get the Carrier.
It's the only ship where everyone seems to have the discount work properly, and it grants a Starship Trait that could be useful later on. Also, while the Federation has a limited supply of Carriers (one for the Federation, two for the KDF, none for the Romulans), this gives you an option for playing a full T6 Carrier (something no faction has in their C-Store lineup). Added to that, several great Federation ships have a hangar tacked on, and the Starship Trait would allow you to keep that single hangar active longer and at a higher "Star Level". Then again, the Federation also has access to more potential Starship Trait options in general, so you may need to make some decisions about which ones you plan to use and see if you have room in your build for the one from the Sarr Theln.
For next year (assuming they're still doing the discount and assuming that it functions), get the rest using the combination of the discount and multiple characters. This would also apply to the Summer Event, with which the discount worked perfectly (last time).
With each passing day I wonder if I stepped into an alternate reality. The Cubs win the world series. Donald Trump is President. Britain leaves the EU. STO gets a dedicated PvP season. Engineers are "out of control" in STO.
Ok, IMO, The Sar Theln is an amazing carrier. But, once you got enough Starship traits to pick from I don't see the Trait it comes with as worth the slot. Even the frigs have a 16 sec cooldown. Never found myself waiting to launch one. Same with Fighters. And Either your pets live through Warp Core Breaches, or they dont. That trait aint gonna save them from the biggest problem with pets. If you don't have enough Starship traits to slot, then sure, slot it.
I'd rank the Sar Theln up there with the best carriers in game, JHDC, Narcine, Fleet Karfi. Don't let the 3/3 loadout fool you, It's a great carrier. I have no experience with the Recluse, but it's up there too. I was just comparing the 4/3 Weapon loadout ships. I see the Sar Theln as equal, or even better then them. Beaing able to slot OSS makes up for that weapon and raises it above other 3/3 carriers. At least from my Parses.
The Chel Grett I never got, but this year figured, why not. Ill go after all 3 ships. So it was the afterthought. But, WOW, did this ship surprise me. And giving the current state of the game. Its in the perfect place. It's between an escort and a cruiser.
Escorts with cannons arent useless, but better DPS with Beams. But, down a weapon slot compared to a cruiser.
Destroyers, Which is what the Chel Grett seems to me. Also lose a weapon slot, but not the chel grett. It gets 8 weapons, The Destroyer Mastery Package, Which seems the best package in the game, All about damage. And even has a LTC sci for Grav Well utility.
Had no desire to fly this thing, Got it on my Engineer. Doing 30k with it. Its a BLAST to fly. My favorite ship right now. and my question is.
Why is the Chel Grett Free? lol
I'm glad it was, otherwise I'd have never tried it. But give me a T6 Chel Grett. And makes me wonder what the DPS Wizards could get outta the thing.
The Carrier has the boffs slots that you can chuck high level sci boffs into. So if you want to use GW3, there's a CDR sci slot for that.
And with 4 sci consoles, you can back up those sci abilities with the appropriate consoles. From a purely sci-driven perspective, the Breen carrier is the most science-friendly carrier in the entire game. And it's arguably the most sci-friendly of the 3 Breen ships.
I have all three. The Chel is a damn fine ship in it's own right. The Lt.Comm slot is great - a destroyer that flies like an escort that can through GW's when needed.
But I enjoy the Carrier far more. I've outfitted it with polaron weapons and the breen set + warp core, a perfect set-up for Delta Rising. She can put out 12K easily, 17K after I did the upgrade to the elite pets.
I wasn't sure I'd be able to get the carrier due to (work commitments) but finally got some free time to acquire it today and I'd highly recommend it.
I never play with carriers with the exception of the Vesta's single hanger. But this ship is great fun.
It's a true T6 fleet level carrier, 11 consoles, 13 boff stations, high level science boff slot, sub-system targeting.
That's a lot of bang for your buck, a hell of a lot when you consider it's all FREE!
Just sitting back and managing your fighters to keep them alive whilst you spam TR, TBR and GW3 to keep the NPCs pinned down is highly effective. I just let my fighters do all the work and concentrated on keeping them alive, they did a lot of damage.
Even my half-assed "cobbled together in five mins" build of phaser arrays did pretty well. And it can take a heck of a beating too.
The other 2 Breen ships are nice for lower level toons i'd say, but everything going forward is T6 so you'd be mad not to take the deal best ship whilst it's available to you for free. Even going through the starship mastery to get the trait unlocked might be helpful for later on if even better carriers come out.
I'm not really a carrier captain either, the only carrier I ever even used was the Obelisk from the promotional event back when they introduced the Dyson Sphere. I never really got much use out of it, and eventually stopped flying it completely.
Despite that, I still went and got the T6 carrier, just because the perk would help my Romulans Elite Drones on her Scimitar. I never really intended to fly the ship much, but after getting it, I'm having a hard time tearing myself away from it. It's a surprisingly capable and versitile ship and I'm quite enjoying it. It's also a very good ship from a Science Perspective. Even with 6 weapons and the fighters that come free with the ship it can do some pretty nice damage and has access to intel abilities.
I have the Raider as well and haven't yet flown it, so I can't really give you a contrast between the ships, but I can tell you that the Sarr Theln is a surprisingly nice and capable ship. I'm quite happy with it.
Thanks, all, for confirming my suspicions that the carrier is the way to go. I will definitely think about rolling some alts in time for this December's winter event so I don't have this problem again.
I agree I might eventually settle on the Pathfinder for my Fed Sci. I really enjoyed the vanilla Intrepid-class. Of course, that's contingent on me accumulating $30 worth of Zen. Also, the RP'er in me thinks a Sovereign-class command should follow a Luna-class command.
I must point something out about the carrier. The T6 trait is apparently the cause of some folks, myself included, having lag, server not responding (SNR) and BSOD crashes. It was intermittently causing heavy SNRs for me, and game crashes for at least one fleet mate of mine, but once the trait was disabled, the issues stopped. I would honestly make certain that you disable the T6 trait before you go on a mission, even if you fly another ship, until the devs address the issue.

I read on Reddit it causing you to crash if you run its Trait along with the Dauntless trait. Something like that.
Just to add, you mentioned being a Sci. If you enjoy having and using a variety of Sci skills at a moments notice I'd suggest going with the T6 Carrier. The Raider makes for an interesting Sci leaning ship with it's universals but it is a T5 ship.

Easily the best free ship in the game.
