Aegis DOff request

iamynaughtiamynaught Member Posts: 1,285 Arc User
I recently reached level 15 in all the crafting schools (thanks to having alts specializing) and was interested in doing some crafting. I was particularly interested in getting some Omni-Directional beams, some of the Exotic Particle Field Exciter consoles, the TR-116 rifle and the Aegis set.

Everything seemed fine until I went to get the things I needed for the Aegis set. I knew that the lvl 15 items needed DOff's with specific Specializations, but I didn't pay enough attention to the Aegis set needs. While the other projects have several different DOff's that can accomplish the tasks, the Aegis set only has 1. And that 1 DOff is now only available through absolute blind luck from the Academy R&D mission.

So, I figured "Hey, I have a few alts, I'll just run the Academy mission until I get that DOff."

Turns out, that DOff is CHARACTER bound on pick-up. Which I only found out after running the mission over a dozen or so alts for the last 2 months and finally getting one. Sadly, it wasn't on one of my crafters.

How freaking stupid is that?

I will skip the rest of my ranting and get to my point.

Devs, could you PLEASE make some common Aegis DOffs or make it so Gumarre isn't character bound on pick-up? Completely unbound would be perfect, but I'd settle for account binding Gumarre.

Shoot, make some Uncommon and Rare R&D DOff's for all the schools. Now that I'm thinking about it, it really doesn't make sense to only have Common and Very Rare crafting DOff's. Spread things out, give players more choices. Leave it as the only way to get the crafting DOff's is through the Academy R&D mission, or lockboxes. Just guarantee that we'll get one every time from the R&D mission, since it IS from the recruiter. Seems odd to me that I end up "recruiting" supplies most of the time.

It's really frustrating to spend all the time leveling up the crafting schools and then essentially be locked out because the RNG seemingly hates me. Give us more options, please.

Agreed. We need more sources of R&D specialists and we need them to also come in Uncommon and Rare qualities, not just Very Rare and Common; commons are too easy to dump into a fleet project or otherwise accidentally purge from one's roster.

Can't the school doffs make the Aegis set components. Otherwise, what can the shields doff do, since that's the only level 15 shield item?

I do agree that it shouldn't have been bound in the first place. However if they made it an account bind you then have the problem of moving it to other character. DOFFs can't go in the bank and you can't place account bound in the mail. This means it would have to be completely unbound.

As someone who crafted previously at Memory Alpha -- and earned Gumarre (post-crafting UI update/new crafting system) from having already crafted Aegis space equipment ...

I fully agree with the OP.

If there's an issue with granting Gumarre, based on STO's coding, then offer "Gumarre Jr.", or another Aegis-capable Ferengi DOff. This DOff should be obtainable to those over Crafting level 15, say in 3 schools (shields, deflectors and engines, e.g. Aegis set items). Make the Aegis DOff available for purchase on Fleet Starbases or Spires.

To the Devs/content designers, I think this would ENCOURAGE crafting.

The rarity of the Aegis R&D duty officer is ridiculous. I didn't do crafting before 9.5, but I currently have a crafting character with 3 schools at level 15, and a 4th sneaking up on 14. I have all the components needed to craft the Aegis set, except the duty officer. I'd be fine with buying a white quality duty officer off the exchange . . . except there isn't one.

Instead, I just get to keep running Request R&D Assistance every 48 hours until I get lucky and get Gumarre. That's beyond stupid. Every other level 15 special item can be crafted using a white doff that is readily available (if expensive), but the Aegis set is off limits? I wish I'd leveled other schools instead of Engineering, Shields, and Science. Or just sold off all my components and used the EC to buy Aegis sets for my alts.

I would LOVE it if they converted Gumarre to Bound to Account, since I have a Bound to Character Fed Gumarre on a KDF-aligned Romulan. Yeah, that bug sucked; I was lucky enough to get one and I can't use it because they gave me one from the wrong faction. The only problem is, though, that you can't transfer doffs via the Account Bank, and can't use the Mail for Bound items of any kind... so Bound to Account wouldn't accomplish anything. :(

It would be better if they reversed the "fix" for Defera Crafting that removed the General Research Skill requirements and progress... then we could earn him again. Alternatively, if Gumarre didn't bind at all unless equipped they could get folks burning dilithium to find one for the Exchange... plus, that would fix my still-bugged Gumarre. :P

I have a different view. I have been working my crafting up, but didn't do the aegis paths. I was, however, an original crafter pre-revision.

The "Gumarre" Doff was the ONLY compensation given for (a) all the crafting that had been done, and (b) the ABOMITABLE exchange for old crafting materials... the rares didn't even convert for much more than base and I still have a huge stack of them. To give Gumarre to everyone would be a slap in the face. I hope to eventually use my Gumarre Doff, but it should STAY with those who did make an effort to craft BEFORE it became the current cash cow.

With the crafting material requirement changes, the overall price of crafted special projects has taken a hard nose dive into the gutter. If you really want Aegis equipment, you can find it on the exchange cheaply.

If any of you want an Aegis whatever and have the materials, contact me and I'll craft one for you. If no one takes me up on this, fine. If hundreds want in on it, we will have to make a FIFO schedule and you'll have to decide on wether you want to wait.

As someone who had crafting max I do not agree with you.

Also he is given out in the R&D aquisition DOFF missions I should know as I have him on three characters who never did crafting before, one even has two of them might even be three I will have to take a look. Therefore you're a and b are incorrect.

As of today, I have given up on bothering with crafting. I'm so tired of trying to get Gumarre from the Academy R&D mission. All I seem to "recruit" anymore are mats and components. I haven't had an R&D DOff drop in the last week. And I recently found out there IS another Aegis R&D DOff, Prof. Jefferson Hawk. It seems the DOff is only available through the Xindi lockbox and to make matters even worse, it's Bound on Pickup.

So Cryptic wants me to gamble with my Dil in the futile hope of getting Gumarre on one of my crafters who has an Aegis school at lvl 15, or throw real money in the hopes of getting the other DOff from a lockbox?

    No thank you.

I'm seemingly better off just buying the stuff already crafted off the Exchange.

It seems like such a simple request to be asking for more types of R&D DOff's, especially Aegis DOff's. Oh well, maybe someday something will be done about this.

I am so glad I decided to max out crafting and get the Aegis set prior to the new R&D system went live. With DR I decided to start a new character from scratch and take advantage of all of the new mechanics in the game...but now I found out that the Doff required to make the Aegis set is stuck behind a paywall. Why? I didn't have to before the new system, I just had to invest time and dil and materials and I was able to craft it.

At this point I really have no reason to continue my alternate char since I'm not interested in a TRIBBLE shoot after spending several months investing in building my crafting level and gathering resources to craft.

    Wow. Just WOW.

Is the Aegis set really worth crafting?

I have a Blue Ferengi DOff that will let me create the items, but 20,000+ dilithium seems a bit excessive for the set.

    Is AEGIS worth it?

So far I am not that impressed. If the proc on the defensive immunity buff is your thing then great. I guess I will transfer it to my alt that tanks poorly, for looks on his off ship. I am underwhelmed by it.

Well i done my first R&D recruitment the other day and, the ferengi ( gun something ) was one of the doffs i got ( rare - blue ).
I was lucky i understand, so I've got no problems crafting the Aegis set, i would've not gambled/payed for him tho.

I scraped together every credit and resource I could and made 8 sets of Aegis gear before the new crafting system went live. I'm glad I did, because half of my stockpile bankrolled our fleet's T5 starbase, and I gave a couple of sets out to fleeties in need. I have releveled my crafter so she can once again make Aegis gear, but so far, there hasn't been a screaming need for it, and i am sitting on my one remaining set for a rainy day.
"Susse-thrai" had been the name bestowed upon her, half in anger, half in affection, by her old crew on Bloodwing; the keen-nosed, cranky, wily old she-beast, never less dangerous than when you thought her defenseless, and always growing new teeth far back in her throat to replace the old ones broken in biting out the last foe's heart.

It doesn't matter that the Doff Gumarre is Bound to Character. You can have one character leveled up to craft the Aegis Set. Once complete you can pass it on to any character you choose. Then the Aegis Set is bound to that character. Your other toons MAY have to reach lvl 15 to upgrade other items, but you will need one advanced enough to produce stuff for your other toons. One to give others the Superior Techs for all the Schools. This crafting toon will receive from the others all the material they scan in space and ground so that it has all the ingredients it needs to craft for the rest. Most of the UR/Epic consoles are account bound. However, if your other characters desire to upgrade Fleet items this crafting toon will have to supply them with the tech upgrades necessary for them to upgrade character bound items on their own. I don't think the other characters have to have any lvl 15s to upgrade these items.

Just make sure that the crafting character has all the RD doffs it needs for all the Schools. They are mostly Xindi, but there a special ones just for the Aegis. I have one Ferengi. It isn't very rare, but it can craft the Aegis Set. From there I have to upgrade the resulting Aegis to UR/Epic. Well, we can't have everything, but so long it makes it happen then you have a chance.

I have crafted the Aegis Set, but I have not used it yet. I don't know what ships they would work best on. Until I know this, I will have to just keep it in stock. I don't think I can afford to do many more, as there are other items more important to craft and upgrade.

Do any of you know where the Aegis works best?
