I can only speak for myself, but unless there is going to be T6 versions of at least the iconic canon ships, I won't be spending another dime on ships again.
I'd like to captain a canon Star Trek ship in a Star Trek game, not some whacked out Cryptic design.
Ships get old and replaced as newer technology is built...care to show them where there is data on canon 25th century Starfleet vessels? :P
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power
The idea (I believe) behind T6 ships, or one of the ideas at least was because they were running out of setups for T5. If they suddenly upgrade all T5 ships to T6, they'd have the same problem; too many ships, not enough true variety.
I would like to see some ships released as T6, but the problem there is that everyone has a different idea of what should, and shouldn't get that treatment, so...
T6 ships have an extra boff power slot and hybrid intel boff seating (most of which are lame and limited to Lt. unless it's on a full intel ship), while T5-U ships get an extra console slot. I dunno about anyone else but I'd rather have the extra console.
The traits aren't really limited to just the T6 ships since they're available to any ship you own, so they're not really a T6 benefit. Some people get a T6 ship just for the trait and not because they want the ship itself, much like some people buy a Cstore ship just for the universal console that comes with it and never touch the actual ship.
Talien:
Agreed. The extra console is way more useful than any Intel seat, and considering that the lvl5 trait is indeed applied to the player, there's no additional benefit to T5-U becoming T6.
Case in point, one of the knocks against some of the T6 ships is that they have less overall strength and power, to balance for the extra benefits of the Intel powers. If the T6 ships had the power plus the full strength, there's be an argument.
So really, the T5-U ships are the 'vanilla' T6 ships. They have all the uprated strength and buffs, but without the downgrading that comes with the specialist seating.

Fleet T6's will solve that. They'll have both.
With regard to the traits though, and the unique consoles, that's all really most people do buy the ships for, and most people who do use them aren't set up correctly to benefit from that purchase. I don't think I've ever purchased a ship for a console (or trait). Either I've needed I've acquired from the exchange, or don't own, and I'm quite content with that. Most of the traits and consoles are gimmicky anyway. You can have just as much casual play/fun without them. I do.
They have a bit more choice in skills (pick intel but sacrifice others) and a 5th "mastery trait" which is actually not a ship trait like SM 1-4 but a character trait which works independent from the ship and probably in the not so far future might not even require a T6 to fill all 4 Ship Trait slots.
Also they have a console less than fleet T5U and hulls made of paper.
So to anybody wanting to downgrade my T5U to T6: Here; take this bag full of "NO".
I'd bet that if the players would be willing to pony up another 2000 zen for a ship that they already paid 2000 + Zen for that Cryptic would be willing to give us full T6 upgrade options for our existing ships
In the end I think the above could make Cryptic a boat load more money than trying to sell us newer T6 ships.
Heck I'd be willing to drop Twenty to make my Galaxy X, Scimitar and Jem Dread full T6 vessels.
To be honest I'm not sure why Cryptic has not added the option to do the above by now, it's money that they are leaving on the table
You clearly wont see any of the T5 ships being allowed to be upgraded to T6.
Reason: Traits
All T6 ships have a unique starship trait.
Upgrading T5 ships to T6 would force Cryptic to develop and release dozens of new starship traits. Thats something they clearly wont do anytime soon.

T6 ships have 10 console slots.
T5U upgrade turns a ship into T6.
Fleet-quality adds another console.
