Something strange just happened to me - I bought ten master keys and opened ten Xindi lockboxes. Didn't get anything special, but hey, them's the breaks. The strange thing is when I went to put the mirror escort box I got up on the exchange - it was bound to my account. In fact, all the items I received from the boxes were bound to my account, including the duty officer mini-pack and the mirror escort reward pack, both of which I included screenshots of because as far as I can tell there shouldn't even be any way to bind those items since the only way to interact with them is to open them.
EDIT: Not only that, the Lobi Crystals I got won't stack with the other Lobi Crystals in my inventory, despite the fact that
all Lobi are account bound. The Lobi store does read both stacks however.

A recent change to the way things can stack was added in the last patch. This may have been another 'unintended consequence'.
I had a similar odd thing, this just happened in the past 5 days
I used to play on one char, who had piled up several rich mining claims. I thought, hey "why not make another char and give him some of the claims". This turned out to be a great idea, worked great. So I made a couple more and redistributed the the claims again. Awesome!
So I decide to make one more char. The claims on my main char are now bound to the character, wth?
So I check some other chars, some are randomly BoA and some are BoC.
how messed up is that?

Yeah, I thought it could be something like that. It's hard to say, but most are pre-DR.
The thing that I know for sure though is that I disbursed some from my main, from a single stack that is now BoC, that was previously BoA. Since I only played one char for a while he's sitting on a pile of unrefined ore, the claims are ... not that useful for him.
I remember thinking "hm, ok, these are valuable ... hm, I wonder if there are db errors with the expansion ... I'll just transfer some of them now and do more later when I make more chars". Heh, I wish I had done more!. Since everyone is running out of dilithium now,
EDIT - It's not a crisis, but it is annoying. It's also a bit perturbing, I mean, that's a lot of effort to restrict dilthium, and it's the kind of effort that spawns little bugs here and there. (versioning in a db or in code) They should be a bit more loose with it. It's not like people are somehow magically going to stop upgrading items anytime.
Maybe what happened to me lends a little credit to the OP, duno.
No they weren't. It was in the patch notes saying that it didn't apply to previously gained mining claims. There is a way to make them lose the bind but that is a glitch and so not something to be talked about on the forum.
That glitch exist in cryptic's heads only. Many ingame items are bound for no reason including old mining claims.
Well I know there was something unintended with the upgrade kits they gave away, something about people unstacking them and trading them. Not much of a gigantic secret method. But I missed out on that, I miss out on all the glitches, I'm too busy working or playing.
I don't know what happened. I just heard they changed things with the claims, so I went to go check it out and was pleasantly surprised, moused over my stack of claims, and then moved some of them to my account bank. That's it.
