I can't stand the word "toon"

It's a pet peeve of mine. STO isn't some crappy cartoony MMO. It's Star Trek, stop calling your characters toons. That is all lol.

I don't like it that much myself. But each is to their own. I usually call mine captains or commanders or characters which ever I end up saying.

    Its all preference.

Might want to take a look at some real people for comparison before making such a statement.

I've always been partial to "Avatar," but perhaps I just watch The Guild too much.

    avatar...character

All too long...i use toon instead of avatar, instead of character, instead of cartoon for the same reason the OP used "lol" in the last part of his first post instead of "i'm laughing out loud you guys".

P.S. Toon always bugged me, as well. My character isn't Bugs Bunny. Oh.... Wait... We need a Daffy Duck skin... After all, Trek was going strong in the the 24th and a half century... :P

    In fairness,

The only thing this game has in common with the actual Star Trek is the trademark and IP.

It's a bog standard MMO. They're toons, chars etc.

The sound of that is, really, quite atrocious.

indeed. i am not roger rabbit, and have no fear of dip, therefore i am not a toon.

i am a vulcan/jaffa hybrid living in multiple universes simultaneously. that makes me... a character, or, well i'm not too sure. i guess i'm still fictional, but definitely not a toon.

Neither could the woman who wrote Mary Poppins, apparently. (And despite the movie Saving Mr. Banks, the real author was never won over by anything anyone at Disney did. When it was turned into a stage play, her one requirement was that all the Disney touches, particularly the songs, be excised.)

Ahhh man. This takes me way back to my FFXI days. We used to have glorious fights that went on for pages and pages and pages about this. Thread after thread, day in and day out. Fights in /shout when chilling out in Lower Jeuno. Fights in Whitegate while gathering merit parties. Sigh, how nostalgic.

Thanks for taking me back, if only for a little while. Those were the days.

I'll always call them "characters." I've never been able to stand the use of "toon" either (as you'll note, Acme is completely absent from our environment and anvils are not falling from the sky). How did that term even get to be used in MMOs anyway?

I have never cared for the word "toon" either and tend to use the word alt, short of alternate character.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Agreed. I have characters except when I'm really into it.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
