Whats the fastest way to travel long distance in Sector Space?

One of my alts live much of his life traveling from sector to sector. (He's KDF if that matters.)

Whats the fastest way to travel the universe - not short burst speed with a cooldown but reliable speed? And a method that can be relatively easily obtained (i.e. bought).

I'd ask in the General Diiscussion forum but the post would be on the 2nd page within a half hour.

Certain engine boost sector speed (Assimilated are the only ones off the top of my head, but I know there are others)
Doffs to reduce cooldown on slipstream/transwarp
the solanae warp core has a jump ability
points into that low level skill I can't remember the name of.

Maco is the other engine that boosts speed.
Also several fed cruisers, plus the tuffli and cell/ships get extra transwarp destinations.

You can pick missions and transwarp to them. Like to get to drozana station start everything old is new and hit transwarp, then dop the mission later.

As you level up your dip!omacy/maurading you get additional transwarp destinations. Also a boost you can use every 4 seconds on other captains to give them access to earth/qonos along with a long term speed buff.

I'm looking for sector travel and generally not transwarp travel (except if its a useful shortcut, of course.)

So am I looking at Max Warp Speed? So far all the engines I've seen are max 10 - haven't looked through all the rep engines yet.

There is an engine speed related skill but it said it was not used in sector space travel...

Driver Coil is the skill I was thinking of.

    The transwarp button! :D

Really though: Vesta with the set bonus, Assimilated Engines(they are very slightly faster than async engines), Maxed Driver Coils, Diplomatic Immunity + Raiding Party. You can easily break transwarp 40 with all that when you go into slipstream.

Fleet Engines also have the Sector Space speed boost, and although they don't give any "set bonuses" they do have variants with the [Pow] mod which boosts power to certain subsystems.

With the right combination of Driver Coil skill points and Driver Coil boosts [coi] you can get up to ~ Warp 20, which is only slightly slower than Slipstream Speed.

There is also a special boost that "teleports" you a (relatively) small distance several light years ahead in Sector Space, though I think the cooldown on the power makes it less than greatly useful.

The only other one is the Warp Core which comes with the Tal Shiar Adapted Battlecruiser and Destroyer. These are only useable on those ships though.

It's more sensible to have this feature in Warp Cores, but apparently the Tal Shiar ships were the first, and subsequently only, ships to have this feature, since originally there was no such thing as a separate Warp Core in STO.

It would be nice if Cryptic added a "Foot to the Floor Boards" [FTTFB] mod to the "random" options on warp cores, but, like all "QoL" additions to the game, we probably won't see it, because it doesn't make them any money to add it.
Oh, hoho hohhhhh, Oh,, hoho, hohhhhh

Thank you for such a detailed and complete response!

My primary need is for sector-to-neighboring sector as I like to "patrol" an area. It sounds like the fleet engineers and Driver Coil Skill Points and the Driver Coil boosts [coi] are what I need, if I am reading your post correctly. Where do I find the boosts and are they short lived? I'm not a big fan of having to keep "goosing" my engines, I'd just like something I can install and go.

Back when they were an option, I bought a character or two some low-tier Assimilated Engines. I didn't always use them, but rather kept them in my inventory and simply swapped them in when travelling in Sector Space. Now that low-tier (Mk X) aren't available at minimal cost, pick an Assimilated, Fleet, or MACO/Adapted Honor Guard Engines that you might actually use and that will get you to and fro faster.

That and Driver Coil, but without the right engines you will still be capped at Warp 10.

The other thing is, if you use the Transwarp buttons for different Episodes you can get almost anywhere. It depends on your faction and just how much each mission costs in ECs just where you can get to, but it's quick and doesn't trigger cooldown on your main Transwarp button. After you finish the Episode, pick it up from the Replay list and you can hop to and fro... but yeah, some Episodes are stupidly expensive to use the Transwarp button now that they implemented the EC nerf, so pay attention to cost.

also as you increase rep you get transwarp spots Rom rep gets you tau dewa transwarp Dyson straight to the sphere

The best engines to use in sector space are the assimilated maco engines.

Then, you have the dyson destroyer warp core, that gives you the subspace fold (teleport to 2 ly away)

Then, you have the improved slipstream drive that comes with the Vesta pack.

Then, you have other types of warp cores (fleet ones for example) that are like small slipstream drives

I cant remember more right now, and i miss a lot of things, i am still too new to the game :)

Just cruising around sectors I normally use the Borg Assimilated engines [cause I like the visuals and spec 3 pts in driver coil], Driver coils skill with borg engines

    1 pts = warp 15.26
    3 pts = warp 17.78,
    5 pts = warp 19.18,
    6 pts = warp 19.88

Driver Coil =This skill improves your Starship Warp speed and turn rate in Sector Space. It also improves your Full Impulse speed and Full Impulse turn rate in-system, while simultaneously reducing the power drain on your other systems while at Full Impulse speed.

edit: just for fun Starship Skill Point Effects table

The fastest way i use to get from one end of the map to the other is to select a mission in that sector then drop it and youl be in that sector for a small amount of ec.
