Upgrade system a Cheap shot at Tempting players to Sink Dilithium

hojain2020hojain2020 Member Posts: 417 Arc User
We have been using MK 12 stuff for a while now and the temptation to see what MK13 gear does is pretty strong. Cryptic played on this and made pretty unreasonable cost values and idiotic time gates from 5 min to 3 hours to make sure some of us spend the Dil and EC.
I find this very unfriendly to the STO playerbase. Sure STO went F2P and i keep seeing stuff on the forums where there is a feeling of responsibility on the players side to understand that cryptic needs to make its money somewhere ya know! or Hey its F2P micro transactions are ineveitable live with it etc etc.... but look at it this way..... what if the upgrade system was ec intensive till purple MK 14 and then a dil sink for a chance to get epic gear? Would that not make everyone feel a relative fairness to both player and F2P priorities ?

There's a DILX for a reason. Sure let them change it to EC so we can have 20+ threads QQing about the EC cost next. If you can't control your urges to spend, it's not anybody's fault but your own. Read the forums, you don't need mk13+ for DR content. It's a want.

EC is makeable in-game through the exchange and playing content. Dilithium is capped. If its EC intensive it will make players play the content of the game ... Dil intensive well we are stuck with Dil CAP and MONEY. The point is EPIC stuff is finally the best gear in the game isnt it... pay for that in the way it is desigend now. Everything else in-game should be earn-able through playing content.

It won't make the play the content. it will make the grind the Foundry farming missions, and then complain that their drops cap out...

Learn some patience. You will not be required to upgrade your equipment to continue contributing valuably in the game. Not now, not ever.

Real life lottery systems are often called "a tax on the stupid", meaning people who can't figure out that throwing $2 away on a 1-in-14-million chance to win $1 million is a bad deal.

I see most of STO's 'costs' as 'a tax on the impatient'.

I see a ton of QQing in the forums about P2W and Cryptic/PWE 'forcing you to pay over and over' etc.

As said above, nothing in the game 'needs' Mk 13 or 14 items (at least not yet). People are crying over high dil costs when they are paying the "GiveIt2MeNAO!" dil charge... for items that are not even needed!

I tossed one purchase at STO quite a ways back (full price Life Sub). I play the game, I come in 1st/2nd/3rd on ESTFs, there is nothing in the game I can't do (well except dominate PvP or something, haven't even gone there). I am sitting on (account wide), 10,000 Zen, a couple hundred mill EC, and 4 mill or so refined Dil... because there is NOTHING that actually requires spending it!

I save stuff up because I assume at some point I will need to buy some big stuff... which hasn't happened. I don't even have any fleet ships, gear or consoles. I hardly have any Rep gear even. Just drops from missions, events, and the purple drops from working up the Rep system.

Everything in the game can be acquired by playing and some patience... not saying people won't/shouldn't pay for stuff because hey, who has time to grind out the dil for a Scimitar or Vesta package for the account?

Buy what is fun/worthwhile for you, but to complain that one of the 'most free' games around is just a sneaky money grab is kinda crazy.

(PS: Ask the people who invested 5-7 years in City of Heroes if they would rather have had more money grabs, or lose their game? Pretty sure I know which way that answer goes...)

So the current system of upgrades makes you grind dilithium instead? and if one is impatient just pump in ZEN for dil to get rid of the time gates? for gear that is obviously not even the best just mk13 ? Plus whats wrong with foundry missions? there are some pretty good ones out there .. some better than the current in-game stories If i may add. And its pretty easy to control the foundry missions too to not make them farming shops.

This is actually a good thing. Just looking at the price of Zen on the Dilithium Exchange for the past few months has shown the need for more Dilithium and EC sinks in the game. Hopefully, this will lower the price of Zen, and make it more affordable for 'Silver' F2P accounts...

I tend to agree with you actually. However what is wrong with GIVEITTOMENOW for gear that obviously is not important for DR? However i think there should be a dil gate for "giveittomenow" for epic gear.

LOL??? unfortunately, you are lost , as i see.

If you want to play elite stfs, you need to upgrade. If you want to enjoy the latest enemies, you need to upgrade. If you want your performance to be in par as the latest ships and equipment, you need to upgrade.

Ok, so the choice if yours, but then, dont complain because you die really fast in those stfs or your ship cant handle the new genetically modified kazons xD.

No, of course you are not "required" to upgrade, but that is just a word. Everybody knows that in one way or another, you will need to upgrade, and your old ships will be obsolete, no matter what people say. I know this since the day 1 i hear about delta rising.

I mean, some of you are really naive, but seriously, just see the trajectory of cryptic in this matter, please. If you think you will do just "fine" with your old ship and equipment.. lool, you better dont pug with anyone and you better do the just "normal" stfs or you will really upset... xD.

LOL, i will not say experience (i only play since about 2,5 years ago, and that is not too much in this game..) but i apply just common sense seeing how cryptic managed this game since i started playing.

Difference between mk12 and mk14 is like going into an elite stf with mk10 blue weapons and consoles plus not having any of reps maxed and blue doffs = you will be bottlneeck to all others there and if you are having 2 teammates like yourself (blue gear) you are doomed.

    Odd.

I have Blue MkXI Phasers and, nearly all white/green doffs on my cruiser yet, get 2nd/3rd fairly regularly along with the occasional 1st. Should have my first reputation maxxed in a couple more days.

    It's called Alts.

Marauding Missions and Alts. Equivalent to $6.25 for 2 and $10.65 for 4 additional slots or 16000 or 32000 dil/day plus if KDF you can run Marauding missions which can give free Contraband. I'd recommend refiners on your main account and set up another free account or 2 for the contraband farmers. I have 3 50s and at 8k/day thats 720k dil/month. Now I don't do that much but I can if I could play that much without my wife throwing a frying pan at me.

Even if I run ISE 1x a day per toon, that's 7380/day (this is turning the marks into dil/150 marks =1500 dil+960) and 221400 per month and thats not counting the 90 BNPs I didn't turn in which is about 30k more. The Dil can be gotten with minimal effort, people just need to not be lazy and figure out an efficient way to get it in their time available.

    Indeed.

No idea where this notion comes from, that you MUST get all this new TRIBBLE to survive more than a few seconds in Delta Rising - even when the devs themselves say that current endgame gear is capable of doing the job.

I can already hear the DR screams of the objective failing pug ships as their warp cores explode all around the combat zone ... and that is why it will be fleet runs only for DR on launch day...

What I see so far (just in the 2nd day of it of course) is that people are still hording. I personally am only upgrading non-unique stuff until all bugs are fixed and have spent barely any dilithium - maybe 150k. For some reason people are willing to spend EC but not dil. Maybe in the dream of one day converting it to zen?

People just want what the game has to offer. The whole point in playing a game is to get the best stuff and have fun doing it. Imagine playing Mario Bros. 3 and being charged for using a feather to fly. Then have someone tell you that you don't have to fly, you can run through the level. By taking away the feather your taking away some of the fun. Just like STO. Its nice to have really good weapons and a really good ship. With this new way to upgrade weapons cryptic is taking advantage of a part of the game that should be free. When it comes to upgradeing your weapons and armour that should not be a part of the game you have to pay for. The best weapons and armour should be a reward for defeating a powerful enemy or completeing a hard objective ingame. Does Cryptic want to monetize everything in the game. Next thing you know we will be charged Zen to buy Zen or have to pay to use the exchange. When it gets as bad as having to pay to get better weapons in a game. Then anything is possible.

Crystalline isn't an accurate measurement. Torps do much more damage to the crystal than anything else. No shields either. And it has crazy high energy damage resistance

You can't compare Mario Bros to an MMO. You purposely compare things that are barely comparable. You do NOT need mk14 gold gear to play STO. Even mk12 gear is good enough for DR Epic content. If you're failing, it's time to evaluate why, not just upgrade gear.

My main complaint is that they just HAD to put the "Upgrade" button where the "Sort" button was... Really Cryptic?? You just had to add an accidental upgrade trap instead of putting the button in the middle of the GUI panel?? For sure, I will always be using the Sort function 100x more than the Upgrade, so it was really a cheap shot to move it...
