Hi Captains,

We will be bringing down Star Trek Online tomorrow, Thursday, September 11th, at 7AM PDT (click here to view in your timezone) for our weekly scheduled maintenance and to apply a new patch. Patch notes can be found here, and we expect this maintenance to last for 3 hours. The test server, launcher and access to manage your account may also be unavailable during some portions of the maintenance.

Thanks for your patience and understanding,

- The Star Trek Online Team

To be fair, the bug fix they do have is one I've been waiting on for around two years now. So let's hope it actually works!
Join date is wrong, I've actually been around since STO Beta.

I'd like to know the HOW of this fix. Was it done with prioritising player self-generated FX, which is good, or just by increasing the render limit, which will cause even more gfx lag in big fights?

It's been a problem with the Crystalline Entity event since about season 9 and you're finally fixing it on the same day the Crystalline Cataclysm event ends. Nice.

Better late then never I suppose. LoL. :D

Thank you for fixing it finally. ;)

It's been going on a lot longer than that and in a lot of other areas, it's just more noticeable there.

One can only hope it's the former and not the later, prioritizing player effects while culling others with distance from the player as a reference is by far the preferred method, unfortunately we've already seen them too often try to make a silk purse out of a sows ear with this old engine. I'm just glad to see them finally taking a stab at this after all this time, it makes me hope that they might actually get around to some of the other problems in the game.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.

Decent patch notes. However, someone's going to go cry doom, so...

    *clears throat*

    DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    *wheezes and gasps for breath*

OK, that's enough for one thread.

Only a month until Delta Rising...the anticipation is driving me nuts!

Edit to add: Also, the lag on New Romulus is getting obscene; it's always been slow, but it's getting to the point where I'm being killed by bugs while wearing a full elite MACO set.

I never had the issue in the CE event prior to season 9 and that was with graphics settings on high.

    +1 this :)

Patch says FX from players ship only though, so I guess other environmental effects not directly attached to my ship are still going to be invisible when it gets busy?

Yeah i have seen other peoples grav wells disappear or flicker badly so it wasnt just players own effects not just appearing. Hopefully cryptic can say if other fx anomalys will be fixed with the fix they implemented or not.

Traits still can't be switched from the player's fleet starbase or holdings, either. In addition to the bridge.

Not sure how many times I need to say it, so I'll just keep bringing it up each time the Known Issues are posted.

Unless Mr. Hamilton or someone wants to try to convince me how it's working as intended, despite the fact Starbases and Fleet Holdings are non-combat areas.

It was owing to a problem with raycasting. Apparently something went a bit pear-shaped with it. So we didn't really change any FX priorities or culling code.

    Hopefully this fixes it.

I was kind of hoping for some refinements to the prioritizing and culling code, it would have helped immensely with a lot of the effects spam as well, but we'll see what this does.

The only problem with fix (1) is that it would possibly create invisible borg super-torps again.... well okay not again as the problem still exists but it's a lot better then what it once was.

Awesome that they fix this. Itz like the weapon fire coming from and at your ship should get prio over anything else happening on screen.

    General:

Resolved an issue which was causing FX coming from player’s ship to drop out when too much activity was occurring on screen.

As in when people actually log in these days to do stuff that isn't grind related... ;)

I really hope this fixes all missing graphical bugs, like when in the Undine battlezone for instance..

Great news about the weapons fire fix.

I read on the wiki that mission 1 of ghosts of the jem hadar was mistakenly removed. Does anyone know if it's been fixed or is it still missing?

I know you are all focused right now on the next money-grubbing, "ooooh...shiny," which, of course, will introduce ALL NEW bugs, lags, and everything else the players will warn you about weeks PRIOR to launch, that you will subsequently ignore until they become problems for YOU AFTER launch...

Seriously, still no fix for the R&D, as promised several patches ago? Mail STILL flashing or, for some, not working properly? NO ability to switch traits on a player's bridge? No fix for the host of "known issues" that have remained "known" patch after patch for months now?

Guys: you have to take care of the baby in the crib before you should go painting the room for the one "in the oven!"

Focus on making the game better by focusing on what you already HAVE, the player base you HAVE, the problems you HAVE, before introducing something new for once...

Another short play on the nature of forums:
"Why we can't give the Server Hamsters a break", by worffan101. Directed by Online Stupidity, Copious Forum Rage, and Human Nature.

Scene: A maintenance thread on the STO forums.

Trendy: Hey, everyone, we're bringing the servers down tomorrow for a patch. Notes here (link).

Player 1: Oh, cool, you finally fixed that annoying bug. Nice job!

Player 2: WAAAAAAAAAARGLEBAAAARGLE Y U NO FIX THE BUG I HATE AND WASTE TIME ON OTHER BUG??? U SUCK CRAPTIC!!!

Player 3: Player 2, go whine to your momma.

Player 4 (longtime active forum resident): Hey, Trendy! Hope you have some bacon tomorrow!

Iconians: Not bad. I've noticed these bugs that you may or may not be aware of, as well. *lists a few bugs*

Player 2: U SUCK PLAYER 2 UR DPS IS WEAK AND CRAPTIC SUX NOT GETTIN ANY MORE OF MY MONEY!!!!!!!111!!!1!!

worffan101: Oh, patch notes. Nice. Looks generally good.

    Player 5: wer is esd?

Player 3 (now actively trolling): LOOOOOL Player 2, ur dps is the weak one.

Player 6: Well, these patch notes are nice in that they fix a long-running bug, but I'm going to ignore that to rant about my personal pet bugs that aren't fixed yet and to complain about features I don't like.

Player 5: y is game no workin?

Player 7: Any chance we can get the DOFF UI reverted, and the crafting bugs fixed?

    Player 2: U SUCK PLAYER 3 I REPORTED U HA HA.

Trendy: Maintenance has started! I'll post again when it's finished!

Player 8: Whee! Buckle up for the ride, boys and girls!

worffan101: Morning, Trendy! Having a good bacony breakfast, I hope? Hail Bacon!

Player 5: i cnt log in to game wut is goin on/

Player 3: Clearly Player 2 is compensating for his lack of DPS in-game and sports equipment in RL.

Player 4: Alright! Just finished my last CC with seconds to spare!

Player 1: Aaw, man, had Donatra down to 50% health in a PUG when maintenance started!

Player 2: *gets hit with Modhammer by Askray*

Trendy: Yes, I'm having some bacon. Not sure where it came from, though...

Player 8: ...did you turn the Server Hamsters into bacon, Trendy?

Trendy: I will neither confirm nor deny that possibility. :D

worffan101, Player 4, and Player 1: LOL!!!! :D So funny, Trendy!

Player 5: i wnat bugsip wer cn i get buship?

Player 3: LOL Player 2, ur dps is pants and you can't tank for s**t.

worffan101 and player 1: Ah, patching now...

Player 2: *hit with Modhammer again*

Player 6: When are the bugs I care about going to be fixed? Why are you wasting time with bugs that only affect other people? I'm a paying customer (even though I have refused to buy anything more from you because rage at DR), I should be given more importance than everyone else in the game!

Player 4 and worffan101: Patched! Now to wait for the hamsters to reengage...

    Player 1: Back up.

Player 5: y is no one help me get bugsip?

Player 3: *generic insult belittling Player 2's masculinity and parentage*

    Player 4: Back on.

    worffan101: In. Let's rock!

Trendy: Servers are back up, see you in-game!

Off-screen, the (new) Server Hamsters start running.

    Player 2: U SUCK PLAYER 3 I VAPE U IN-GAME!!!!!!

Player 6: Hey, I have these bugs I want addressed! I bought a small amount of ZEN 3 years ago, that makes me your most valuable customer!

Player 5: wen cn i get back i to game?

*thread is closed because maintenance is done*
