I think we should be able to spend (redacted) and zen in the exchange.
We also need a system that allows us to sell our old ships for zen to cryptic (with some major drawbacks ie loose 50% of your zen investment and you would lose the ship across all accounts) perhaps create a system where when ships aren't being sold & people are selling ships back to cryptic decreases in value and ships that lots of people are buying and not selling them back cost more over time.
You're not thinking like the Ferengi who run this game. They already have your money. What do they have to gain from offering trade-in value on your old ships? What's in it for them?
I think the system works fine as it is. Why add complexity where none is needed? I think people need to spend more time thinking and researching before spending Zen, then this type of buyers remorse would be less frequent.

The main reason is that eventually your favorite ship will go obsolete and useless in a few years just as they should like in the real world but you should be able to sell it.

I don't really see that you should be able to though. Just because you think so, and apparently some others. You pay $20 to $25 dollars, use it daily for a year or two, then get the next thing you like/want. You got your moneys worth.
I just cannot fathom why people insist on treating in games assets as if they were real products that had and/or retained some sort of real world value.

Why can't you treat in game assets as real life assets? It is in fact a virtual galaxy
i dont think selling back a ship is practical with the way we buy ships , but with all the lockbox ships and other collector event ships , whats needed is a way to RE-BOX them . there are plenty of players that have max space filled with mirror and lockbox ships , while they dont always use them they just collect them and you always want to try them out. while youll have one toon with them all unboxed which takes alot of hanger space .

If you don't understand the difference between spending an amount of money for a virtual asset for entertainment and buying a real object that can be re-sold, then I simply don't know what to tell you.
I view ALL ship/gear/equipment costs as entertainment costs. I pay it, use the item I bought to entertain myself for however long it holds my interest and then buy something else.
As the saying goes; "For those who understand, no explanation is necessary, for those that don't, no explanation will suffice."

To be honest, I don't think he/she wishes to understand, they just want to get as much Zen back as they can.
Anyway, won't happen so this is pointless. There is no game out there that allows you to 'refund' your digital purchase of something after you've used it for some time or, even not using it at all.
Retired. I'm now in search for that perfect space anomaly.

You can resell movies and games can't you, at least for the most part. Yes I know that cds are 'real objects' but as I said STO is a virtual galaxy so why can't you resell 'real objects' in a virtual galaxy.

You are right about one thing, this thread is somewhat pointless as it has devolved into condescension. I simply threw the idea out there. Tell me what is wrong with the idea

I never proposed selling your ships and getting USD for them, I proposed selling in game assets for other in game assets just like in the non-virtual world where you can trade assets for other assets. 'Real objects' in a virtual world are virtual objects. Saying I will not give a rebuttal is not a rebuttal.

You are just leasing the ship from Cryptic, you own nothing. Cryptic has the right to repossess/terminate the agreement whenever it wants. You have no recourse but to abide by the rules that you agreed to by checking the EULA box when you started to play STO.
I think they should let us get partial value for our ships instead of upgrading current ones. I am suggesting that this would be a better system than what they are proposing

I never though about it like that, but isn't it the same with land. If you don't pay your taxes they can take it away and the land is only good for your lifespan likewise the ship is only good for the lifespan of the character and as long as you follow the rules.
What they need to do is create a ship exchange. If you want to sell your ships to other players for EC or Dil. That would be a good way to get something out of ships once they become obsolete. Cryptic still gets their money from ppl that want to buy the ships from the c-store, and ppl who don't want to spend money can get the c-store ships for ec or dil. win-win.

Yeah, you choose one of your ships to sell, choose an amount you want to sell it for, if someone is interested they click buy and it transfers the ship to their account. It's no different than other exchange items.

Where's the win for Cryptic? You're asking them to make a brand new system that will remove Cstore Unlocks from 1 account to another for free.

People still need an incentive to buy 'new' c-store ships. What drawback would used ships have?

There will always be people buying the C-Store ships, because they don't want to grind out the Zen via dil farming, and when new ships come out, if they want to sell off their old ships for EC or Dil then they can, and use the currency for Zen, LB keys, etc.
I'm not saying use it as a primary way to get ships, just as a way to get back some form of compensation for ships you no longer use.

How about used ships lose a console slot and dmg resistance is reduced by 10% and a lower shield modifier? I think the simplest solution is to sell the ships back to cryptic at 50% value
To the Opening Post - seriously you're wasting your time. They hardly listen to us as it is and they surely won't listen to you on this topic. But my hat's off to you for trying.

First, you don't own the ship, per the game license you have bought the right to use cryptics property in cryptics game for as long as cryptic chooses to let you use it. They have the right to cancel this financial agreement at any time and you have the right to walk away at any time.
For the second idea, running the auction house on dil is a phenomenally bad idea. It means if I have money and you have time you can only buy 8k dil worth of my stuff per day. That's bad for you, bad for me, and very bad for cryptic. Right now you can buy 8k dil/day worth of my zen, plus as much of my zen items from the ah as you can farm in ec. That's a better system.
And no, increasing the dil cap isn't god either, look at never winter where they allow you to refine three times as much, then charge eight times more for everything. Its not worth it.

Your idea to sell ships for Zen (even if it was 50% less than purchase price) will never happen in a zillion years.
