So, are we going to see a Ramirez class?

jengozjengoz Member Posts: 0 Arc User
first, if you have not watched it, go watch Prelude to Axanar--> http://youtu.be/08Uywy0iflc

Do it! DO IT NOW!

next, I hope with all the new ship Cryptic is popping out we are going to see a nod to this great new Trek Production.

I would love to see ships NAMED (NOT THE DESIGNS!!) after the heroes of the Four Years War... A Ramirez class, Garth Class, Travis Class, and Alexander Class.

And for the KDF, it will be a crime not to see a Kharn Class battleship enter the game.

Cryptic would need to license the usage of that ship. That would seem like a waste of money - especially when the licence could be lost at some point down the road.

If Cryptic is going to waste money I would rather see it going into making new Content rather then paying other corporations for the right to use an image.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Bleah. Whatever that was a 20-minute commercial for might turn out to be half-decent. No reason for Cryptic to waste time and licensing trying to make ships from it though.

As I understand it, the producers of Axanar would not be allowed to sell a licence for their ship design since they aren't allowed to make any profit at all off of the whole production.

Axanar isn't an official Star Trek show, so I seriously doubt we will have classes named after them. Garth of Izar went insane and became a criminal, Starfleet wouldn't name a ship class after someone with a bad reputation.

That does not mean they do not own the rights to what they have created. The only way to give someone else rights to your material is via a contract/license of some sort.

And not making a profit does not mean they cannot charge for the license as they are trying to recoup their production costs. They need to make back millions in production cost before they get close to talking profit.

True. I knew they had the rights, but I didn't know if they could be transferred (money changing hands and all that), but that makes sense that they will still be in the hole even after selling a license.

As a side point, I think they said one of the goals of the film was to show that you could make a quality production without spending millions of dollars, but in any case, it will cost them a lot to make. I'm looking forward to it.

Is there anything new on Renegades?

True. The 20 minute film above cost $75,000.00 to make and they are projecting the feature will cost $650,000.00. So between the two you are looking at an expected $725,000.00 in costs. I would not be surprised to see that go into the million range once it is into full production, though.
Is there anything new on Renegades?
It fell off my radar. The last I heard its second Kickstarter fell a couple of thousand short - They wanted $25,000.00 for SFX and got $22,000.00; but I assume that was enough.

There might be some news about it from the Con this weekend.

Axanar isn't an official Star Trek show, so they are no different than fanmade ships. And the Devs made it clear there won't be any fanmade designs in STO (I.E. they rather spend their budget making their own).

No, i am not asking for the ships designs in Axanar to added. they very cool but are clearly pre TOS era.

What I would like to see is some of the NEW designs to be NAMED after the hero of The Four Year War:

    Kharn - Klingon Supreme Warlord

    Admiral Ramirez - Starfleet Command
Captain Sonya Alexander - USS Ajax
Captain Samuel Travis - USS Hercules
Fleet Captian Kelvar Garth - USS Ares

Garth is canon. I am not sure, but I think the other names have mentioned in passing back in some of the old TOS episodes

Sorry I corrected myself, was thinking old ships than naming new ones.

But I don't see Cryptic naming ship classes after them. They would have to get CBS's approval first. And I seriously doubt CBS would approve of a fan series. Especially since they used JJ-verse ships.

As for Garth, yes I know Garth of Izar is canon. But in canon he might've been a hero at The Battle of Axanar, but afterwards he went insane and become a war criminal after committing genocide. So I seriously doubt Starfleet 170 years later would start naming ships or ship-classes after him.

I'd rather see the devs make a 24th/25th century version of the Ares class from Axanar (or at least "inspired" by it).

PWE wouldn't have to worry about licensing fees and the Ares with 24th/25th century Starfleet parts would look more likea canon Trek ship than the rough draft of the new Fed T6 ship that was just shown at the convention this weekend.
In the immortal words of Captain Sisko: "It may not be what you believe, but that doesn't make it wrong."

but afterwards he went insane and become a war criminal after committing genocide.

He didn't actually commit genocide, his crew mutinied before it got that far. And he was cured of his insanity at the end of the episode.

Besides didn't they name a ship after Ben Sisko.

I've come to think Starfleet's naming policy is a bit random.

I've also figured that the "A List" names will never be class pathfinders due to the risk the design might be a failure. You are probably never going to see an Enterpise class, for example. She's always production run, and some times not even second off the line. The 1701-D is canon as third Galaxy class ship launched, after Galaxy and Yamato.

And there is the 1701 B. We don't even know if she even was first with those body and impulse engine upgrades or when the Excelsior class was put into regular production.

The two "hero ships" that were class leaders (Not counting the NX-01), Defiant and Excelsior, were full of problems that sent them into mothballs at first.
Everywhere I look, people are screaming about how bad Cryptic is.
    What's my position?

It's called the Luna class. :P

And guess what, the Ares and Luna were designed by the same person. ;)

Best to my knowledge, no. Because Sisko isn't dead and you name ships after the deceased.

Garth, even if he was innocent, the damage was done and up to STO, there never been no ship named after him.

No, it's not. It's a Consitution Refit. We even see Scotty reading a schematic in Star Trek 6 that says so.

see that silly avatar of yours? thats how this will end and the same with this thread.

for the moment i think these people have more important things to do then hand out license rights to use of a ship design like this, it would also have to go through cbs as well because it is after all a star trek game. since these people want to impress cbs i doubt for the moment having this license issue to deal with would impress them that much. if it were to happen it would be after they convince cbs of their worth to the trek name to be given such a license then after that, there may not be much issue with licensing i would imagine.

Not to go too far off topic, but Prelude wise (which I did kick into the kickstarter fund), This felt Trek. Even if you're not a TOS Fan, the presentation, the acting, the makeup, the special effects, everything makes you want to know more.

Well done. And back on track, I would love to see cryptic do a team up here. I doubt they will but this is now living history of a beloved franchise.

Actually, there was an Enterprise class. 1701-A was one of them.

The Constitution refit in TMP was a one-off at the time, a pretty much keel-up rebuild administered by Montgomery Scott himself. The design was so successful, they began building new ships using the design. The ship that became 1701-A was one of that production run, rechristened Enterprise and given the new registration number in honor of the original.

That's why Starfleet had a basically identical ship to 1701-Refit ready to hand to Kirk at the end of STIV. They didn't build one just for him, they were already building ships from the Constitution Refit blueprints and they just painted a new name and registry onto one of them.

This information came from Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise, which was canon at least at the time.

The refit Connies are still Connies. Star Trek The Motionless picture takes place in the early 2270s, not long after the 5 year mission ended and years before 2,3 and 4 (2285-2286)

Let me give you a real world example. The US Navy's Essex class aircraft carriers were rebuilt midlife from having a straight deck to having an angled deck, to allow them to continue to serve in the jet age.

Same as the refits to the Connies. they were little more than new skins and new guts on the same old spaceframes. We don't even really know if the 1701-A was an all new ship, or a recycled one with the Enterprise name slapped on. It's actually generally considered to have been the later, due to her short service life of only 6 years (2286 to 2293).
Everywhere I look, people are screaming about how bad Cryptic is.

As would I. However, Cryptic was quite specific in their STLV presentation about 3rd party starships. It may be a dream of many to see beautiful ships like these considered for the game. But it's not going to happen.

No Franz Joseph designs. No Trek ships from fan sites. No Axanar-influenced ships. (No 3rd party ships.)

And even if it were possible, I seriously doubt Tobias Richter (Lightworks), Sean T. or the other starship designers from "Star Trek: Axanar" have any intentions of turning over their ship designs to Cryptic/PWE.

You do realize that Kharn's military leadership at Axanar, for better or worse, led to the Klingons losing the Battle of Axanar... and making Captain Garth a legendary hero.

Again (with no offense intended), it doesn't make sense for the Klingons to honor a military leader who lost a war.
