Great advice, one and all. And it brings up yet another question:

Many of you mentioned "fleet" gear. To be honest, I don't know what fleet gear is or how to acquire it. I've been away too long, I'm not familiar with anything fleet related.

    thanks

Fleet gear is the Ultra Rare quality of gear that is purchased from a fleet starbase.

You must be in a fleet with permissions and requisitions to purchase fleet gear.

Fleet gear costs Fleet credits and Dilithium.

You earn fleet credits by donating supplies to fleet project, which you must be in a fleet to do.

Many fleets also have a certain minimum requirement before allowing access to purchase fleet gear, such as having a minimum of 100k total of Fleet credit donations.

However, larger fleets tend to not have this restriction, allowing you to purchase fleet gear as soon as you join if you can afford it.

Ahhhhh. Now we get to the meat and potatoes of end-game gear. And the grind of it all. Fleets have starbases, embassies, dilithium mines and that thingie in the Dyson Sphere. And in it all are access to special fleet items, or fleet stores. This includes ships. Weapons both ground and space. Kit frames and modules now (used to just be kits). And all the consoles you could ever want. For tactical consoles fleet stores offer the absolute best. Also fleet stores offer some of the best engineering consoles. And really flexible utility boosting science consoles.

The thing about fleet consoles is they offer dual bonuses. So like a fleet engineering consoles can give you that armor/resistance boost you want to improve AND at the exact same time improve your turn rate. For cruisers this is pretty good stuff.

The tactical consoles boost the energy type's damage AND crit. That's bananas.

The science consoles can boost a science stat AND either your threat raised or thread reduced.

    Stuff like that.

Plus fleets have some of the most effective warp cores/singularities for power management.

And they offer the best weapons out there for damage.

I'd say if you were planning on running phasers or disruptors MAYBE the Undine rep can get you competitive weapons, cheaper and quicker. Maybe. But really overall fleet stores will get you the best weapon choices. (Advanced Fleet AntiProtons being pretty much the most popular).

Though I guess now, with crafting ... maybe after they put in the stuff Geko promised is "coming soon" where you can control/choose the modifiers you could possibly get the best weapons from crafting.

Until then though, fleet stores are where it's at.

Which is why my advice is to go with the Tuvok/Worf missions to get pretty much an "end-game" starter set. And then work towards filling out your end-game setup with the few rep grind items you'll want for a set bonus and then FLEET ITEMS TO FINISH.

That's the end-game grind/carrot chase you've missed while you were gone.

Someone who's logged in more recently than me can explain the details of how to get the currency you need to acquire these items and even point out the channel you can use if your particular fleet isn't T5 yet.

Great advice, and I'll move accordingly.

However, where do I find fleet information? On a differenent channel on the forums? Should I research the various fleets in the game, or just accept the next in game fleet invitation?

I've turned every invitation down so far as I didn't even know what they were.

It sounds like fleets sre the STO equivalent to guilds.

As my playing time is eradic with finishing college, and I've got a couple of characters already (my original Tac and my current Tac), would it be possible to build a fleet with multiple chacters on the same account?

There is a whole section of the forum devoted to Fleets. Just look down on the main forum page. You can also read about them in STO Wiki: http://sto.gamepedia.com/Fleet

Yes, a Fleet is a Guild.

You need at least 5 people to form a Fleet. Plus you do not want a solo Fleet. Many people learned the hard way that it takes far more resources then 1 player, or even a few players, can achieve to advance your Fleet. We are talking about millions of bits of resources to get a Fleet to T5.

The best thing you can do is join an established Fleet and start earning your Fleet Marks/Credits doing projects there.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

IIRC not *strictly* speaking true: Romulan Plasma deals more damage than Fleet Antiproton in most situations.

The Borg STFs won't help the OP get the weapons or full slate of consoles they need.

    New Crafting, though ...

And where is he going to get all of the mats for crafting? Oh thats right. STFs.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for all of the great advice. There's a lot here to process. It appears that my OP had merrit, however it wasn't my intention to cause any kind of "strife" for the lack of a better word.

However, all of you have proved, through your own experience and point of view, that the old saying is true...

there are many different ways to skin a cat.

    Thanks again.

If you are interested in joining a fleet then click the following link which brings you back to the main forum index, then scroll down until you see "Fleet Administrative Station"; it's right above "Support". There are sub-forums for each of the three factions.

    http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/index.php

you can read through topics there. Or you can make a thread like "Looking for a fleet to join" or something along those lines. List somethings you are looking for in a fleet and personal play style like:

    Tier 5 only
    Small or Medium size fleet
    Mature Players
    Casual Player (referring to yourself)
    PvE only
    PvP
    Role Playing
