How Long is this game going to last?

ccl7406ccl7406 Member Posts: 0 Arc User
I've been toying around with the idea of buying a lifetime membership for this game because ive fallen in love with it, but one thing is stopping me. With the new free to play model, how long is this game going to last? I ask because I remember the first MMO I ever played, and inevitably fell in love with, coming to a rather sad and tragic end. it was alive when I left on deployment and when I came back, I sadly watched youtube clips of the City of Heroes/ City of Villains servers shutting down once and for all. How long is STO projected to last, and is it worth the risk of buying a lifetime subscription. I had a subscription when the game first released, but have since over the course of two deployments reverted to the free to play mode.

It may die in 10 years, or tomorrow... we won't know until its too late. (The latter is much less likely than the first btw).
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

Games come and go but this one has a strong following and best of all it's Star Trek! This is not like the other online games you may have played in the past. Sure you love this game so do I! It's almost like the Crew and I are really close and sure they protect me and I do the same. When they fall down I go and bring them back to life. They do the same for me when I call for HELP!

But in all this is a game for fun, but it does have a long future ahead. Technology behind this is advance for today game role play online. Sure nothing can top it off. StarTrek DVD Online is where I had learned about STO.

Silver(Free), Gold or Lifetime it's up to you what you want to do there. Before all this it was mostly LAN Party Games, buy software you installed on your PC. Go local or though the internet servers. Those type of game where something else years ago. Today you have STO in HD 1080p 16x Texture and I am sure they're push it to 4K or 8K UHD later on. Right now we are playing this game and everyone else here.

Sure there are things you don't like but still work-in-process game as the technology improves and new skills are introduce I look forward to see what comes out next in the story-line.

I think the F2P model is why this game is around and getting regular updates and is going to get a second expansion.

I would expect a few more years out of this game, certainly enough to make the lifetime subscription cheaper than having a recurring subscription.

What I can't tell you whether your love for the game will stay - a lot can change about you and the game, and you can reach a saturation point for every game (but I can also tell you - sometimes that can just mean you take a 2 year break and then you come back. That happened to me).

Also - I can't tell you whether you actually need the subscription perks.

How long until I can go a full week without someone asking how long STO will last?

Well the whole "The game is going to end with the license", and "Doom" thread have both made it to the FCT, so they will be shot on sight from now on...

    This one differs though...

    It ended 5 minutes ago.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

You have really high expectations looooooool, in my case i expect the game to be here for about 1-2 years, and thats too much already. A Lfs?? yea, give cryptic more reasons to do nothing and keep the great race of destroying this game ^^. A lfs was never worthy since a couple of years ago, now.. much less. But again, some people will tell you it is worthy, some (the realistic ones) will tell you its not. If you have the money and you dont mind to pay for nothing, go ahead. But i tell you, why a LFS?? please think on it seriously.

How long will the game last ? As long as it makes profit !

How long will players stick around ? It is estimated a 2 week turnover is optimal and current for STO. It takes two weeks for people to realise its not a long term MMO by which time they will have likely made a micro-transaction and are no longer wanted.

The high turnover player base are not considered customers but a commodity.

I don't want to get into the doom and gloom the thread almost inevitably calls for speculation on, but I will say that we're a few months away from getting a 2nd expansion pack to this game.

That pretty much confirms that LoR was successful enough for Cryptic to go to PWE and ask for funding for a second expansion pack, and likely is successful enough currently that PWE hasn't suddenly decided STO is a dead duck and cut funding to it. How successful expac2 will be is anyone's guess, but the game will be here for at least 12 months IMO. If expac2 is a giant failure then those might be the last 12 months. If on the other hand, it's another success in the same vein as LoR was, then I reckon the game will be around for another couple of years. If it's only a moderate success, then it'll still be around for a couple of years but I doubt we'll see another expac.

You'll probably get your lifetime's worth out of the game (i.e. another 5 years or so), I wouldn't worry too much.

I would only worry if I heard news of another developer doing another Star Trek MMO.

no idea, only the pwe executives know or if cbs feels the need to pull the IP rights, beyond that there is no guarantee of anything like this, if you want to go LTS then thats upto you and always has been despite anything anyone says.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

As said above, as long as profit is made.

We must welcome and be thankful for the quick turnaround players. Come in, spend a bit and go. The long term community are probably the most valued as we spend a lot over a period.

I will continue to do so, the game has never angered me like Blizzard's fantasy one. The community is predominantly polite and friendly. The forums are a little more maudlin than most ;). It's been years, I'm still playing and still get a buzz with new content. As long as money comes in for profit to the company, the game will continue.

I confidently purchased my LTS this past sale.

I expect to enjoy the game for many years to come.

If BGO can stay up with utter dog doodoo
    STO will be fine.

Lotro has been around almost 8 years creeping slowly towards a sort of fixed endpoint.
    STO is more open-ended.

    I expect 8 years minimum.
One should never underestimate Trek fans and the power of a well known franchise to attract players.

I think we will see another year of forward movement and then drop down to a state like Champions with just new lockboxes every few months while most of the Cryptic team works on some new game.

Doom threads in general have made the FCT, but they are leaving the Dooommm!! thread open and advising the people that want to express their opinions on Doom to do so in that thread.

So they advise people to go to a thread that is specifically made to troll the disgruntled. Typical Cryptic behavior ...

Doom threads, no matter how elaborate, are by nature trolling... Might as well mix em up.

The dress is gold and white. Over 70% people says so. When viewed from a certain screen angle it appears blue and black. The dress displayed on amazon is a blue and black dress, but it's not the same dress in the picture. If you're seeing blue & black you're slightly colored blind. A normal upright screen = white and gold.

Last time I checked I don't work for cryptic studios but okay...

Any who as pointed out, doom threads are not allowed see the fct located - http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=1162461
