Activating SSAO seems to do the same thing as setting shadows to "high", namely activating soft shadows (and maybe increasing the shadow map resolution, though i can't really tell).
This might be tied to the perceived increase in resource usage since the start of season 9. In this case certain options activating other graphics options.

SSAO or Screen Space Ambient Occlusion basically adds realistic shadowing to objects in a scene like so: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IFxjKT7MXA#t=21
It should not affect game performance that much vs say actual shadow/light quality settings and AA settings based on system build.

Except SSAO and shadows in the game work differently. One is calculated from the viewers perspective and one is calculaten from the lightsources perspective. One shouldn't influence the other and actually turning SSAO off does give quite a significant performance increase on some systems. As does setting the shadow quality to medium.
