In the original series episode "Balance of Terror", we see the Enterprise use phasers that had a blast radius. These phaser blasts had a similar effect to those of depth charges used by the navy. I think it's time for these wonderful weapons to make a reappearance in the game. They could be used as excellent pet killer and maybe a new tactical ability for high yield phaser blast.

Hm... meanwhile in the 24th Century, the Enterprise had to resort to firing randomly and hoping to score a hit on the Scimitar...
I mgiht have to watch Balance of Terror again sometime. I don't remember that. Then again... I don't actually know if I saw that episode. Only one I really remember is Trouble with Tribbles...
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

Balance of Terror, Trouble with Tribbles, The Doomsday Machine, City on the Edge of Forever, Amok Time and perhaps The Ultimate Computer are the best of the original series and definitely worth watching.
I realize that I was extremely vague in the original thread, but giving it some thought here is what I propose.
Type: Beam Charge
Rate of Fire: Slower than Cannons/Arrays but faster than standard torpedoes.
Special Effects: Has a 2k blast radius (or same blast radius as heavy torps/tri-cobalts)
New Tactical Officer ability:
Beam: Blanket Pattern - Causes Beam Charges to fire in a broad pattern (think Torpedo Spread with Phasers) at targets within a 180 degree arc.

Thinking about it, it's probably my favorite TOS episode. Ended up rewatching it again after linking it.

Just more food for thought.
I absolutely LOVE this idea. It gives beam weapons something else to offset the lower burst damage and lower DPS compared to DHCs and it takes something we've seen in the Trek universe and puts it into the game.

Don't believe the lies in this forum. I am NOT an ARC user. I play STO on Steam or not at all.

I fully agree with pweistheworst, nice idea!

To OP, the "proximity blast" of the phasers in Balance of Terror was essentially a photon torpedo prior to the later inclusion in their armory. The FX was the same as a torpedo rather than the true phaser.
or you could just understand that they used the Photon SFX incorrectly. Torpedo spread is/was suppose to function as a depth charge. shoot a bunch of rounds out and they detonate on proximity

I understand your point; however, the episode in question completely disagrees with this assertion. Throughout the episode, they emphasize the phasers, show phaser control room, and nothing resembling traditional photon torpedoes appear in the episode. The remastered version of the series keeps the same type of effects, but after that episode phasers take on their blue beam version and torpedoes fire red torpedoes that we typical associate with ST.

Doesn't surprise me as it seems like they had some kind of tech down grade between the TOS and TNG as in TOS they could travel to the edge of the galaxy and the center of the galaxy in a few days while Voyager needed decades to cover that kind of distance, and TOS era ships could take a pounding and still be mostly intact while TNG era ships had a warp core breach if you looked at them funny.

Actually... between TOS and TNG the Warp scale was altered, setting warp 10 as the ultimate speed limit, which if the TNG scale was applied to TOS... the Enterprise violated that on a regular basis I believe.
