People need to seriously think about this one. Without fail, every single time I play this mission, folks just drop out. Sometimes it happens within a minute of starting it. Are people just not paying attention when queuing? Inevitably I end up 3-manning the mission which takes 45 mins - 1 hour plus.
The last one was the worst. Started out going down(solo) one of the channels and suddenly people are dying within the first minute of actual combat. First 2 drop out. Now this time I am doing it in my super shield tank Intrepid ... all kitted out (usually I run tac escorts or sci carrier). So I can handle a dozen or so ship blasting at me for 10 minutes. But damage is weak ... probably around 4-5K.
I made it halfway (solo) before my progress is halted. So I head on to join one of the groups and more people drop out. More deaths and another person drops out. Lacking the DPS to 2 man this and getting cramps from all spam I leave the instance.
I feel sad that I didn't hang out but what is a person to do. Honestly, if you can't elite STFs without dying than don't bother with assault. It is easy enough with an average group. However, if you fail at DPS and tanking please give us a break and don't queue for this mission.

I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

The space 8472 stf's are not ideal at all. UA just fails all the time despite being the easiest to play. People don't view the brief to know what to do, they don't follow the Command Vessels. It's pathetic. I've seen guys go directions completely unrelated to what they're supposed to be doing.
Then the VC mission? Poo. Yellow Poo. And objectives making use of this game engine's poor use of 3d maneuvering. And more Yellow Poo.
I completely stopped doing it after something similar happened to me a couple times. It is NOT fun to 3man or even 2man this mission since this takes forever and the rewards are absolutely not worth THIS much effort.
The last time I played this was when there was still the occasional bug which traps you at the respwan point. It was kinda funny to watch 1 cruiser and 1 escort (only us where still in the map at this point) flying up and down against a invisible wall but also kinda sad. This was also the moment where I said to myself: TRIBBLE this, I'm outta here.
UAE is very very evil. The *only* time I've ever had success on it is with a solanae-equipped Chel Grett with nanite disruptors. My plasma build fleet ar'kif is an exercise in how many repair parts I need to use before I get frustrated. I don't even want to try it with the scimitar, because I am *not* good at flying that thing. I don't get why this is so difficult. 4/5 of the team was on one lane, but we were very quickly overwhelmed by the number of undine ships coming out, and the one guy on the other lane managed to close both his rifts solo.
I just wanna know where all this spike damage is coming from, and a decent ship equipment setup that works against it. The OHKO asteroids in Gornar don't help matters, either. What the heck am I doing wrong here, aside from going into what is clearly an under-conned event?
I assure you UAE is very doable by any ship. Just keep tweaking your failboats till you can solo a lane in UAE without exploding. You'll be a better player when you've accomplished this.
I set up my Obelisk to where it had 12k shield facings (more with a proc), 65k hull, the engineering boffs were completely focused on healing (not to mention HE1 and PH and tacteam) and 40% AP resist. And I got beaten down like a redheaded stepchild. I don't really understand what I'm doing wrong.

What's your shield/aux settings?
What emergency power to whatever are you using?
Are you standing still or flying around?
Do you wait to pop abilities or do you take the initial smack?

It isn't difficult, you just follow the Command ship, but no one realises that...

How close are you?
