Ubuntu Graphics Issue

Hi all. I didn't want to steal anyone's thread and believe my issue to be somewhat original, at least in regards to hardware and the direction of smaller and more portable devices.

I've played STO since about a month after its initial public release and always played it on a more than adequate MS windows pc. Recently however, logic dictated that the electricity used throughout the rest of the day for other purposes (non gaming), far outweighed the computing needs that are required to perform those tasks.

So I have built a far smaller, more energy efficient Ubuntu (Linux) pc which does everything my current beast pc (3.3GHZ Hex Core, 8GB RAM, 480GB SSD) does, except a little slower and with far less graphic punch. However, at < 10% of the power, it is far more economical to have running the rest of the day. Which brings me to the main point of my post:

Ubuntu/Linux Graphics issues.

First the specs:
OS: Ubuntu Desktop 13.10
CPU: Intel Celeron 1037U 1.8GHz Dual Core
RAM: 4GB Kington
GPU: Intel Mobile Graphics Ivy Bridge (HD 2500?)
SDD: Kingston 120GB v300
MoBo: Foxconn D70S-P (mini ITX)

It takes about 12 to 15 minutes to load the game (Wine installation), and it runs... well, it works... but the graphics are reminiscent of PS1 games. The pop up menus and dialog boxes are clear as a bell, but the gameplay... Leaves a lot to be desired. Mind you the onboard graphics adapter handles everything else exceptionally well. I will be installing other (older) games on this box after I install an additional drive (HDD) in the very near future to experiment with the graphics capabilities of the onboard GPU.

The in game graphics are choppy and torn, backgrounds and textures are just a blur and there is next to no detail in anything, aside from the menus and dialog boxes. I will post a few screenshots in the coming days as time permits.

I am willing to accept that this graphics issue can not be rectified without installing a dedicated graphics card, but would like to try to make it work.

I have 19 years experience with computers, networking and all things digital, even more with A/V but my Linux knowledge is not quite that extent in the graphics department as I've mostly used it for business and non gaming purposes. Any help or insight offered will be immensely appreciated.

Thank you.
If the situation is counter diplomatic, then we must follow with force.
