I played the game this morning without a problem and come back this afternoon to a totally corrupted launcher. The only thing I did after log off was run Norton. The game did do some in game patching, but nothing else. I did get back for a little while doing a reload but then the launcher went down again after the game locked up my O/S. All these problems started after the most recent update.
I think that last set of patches royally screwed the game up. Everything from the launcher to certain missions such as Surface Tension are seeing major problems. I had no choice but to uninstall the game until I can be sure these problems can be fixed. It's a shame, really, because I like this game a lot.
Funny story though, I heard about another player also having Norton and being unable to play... Norton is usually viewed as bloatware (with lately a huge list of false positives).
Try starting msconfig, go to services and startup tab and disable everything concerning Norton. Then download the latest loader from the forums and replace the current loader (you have to put it on the same place where the original launcher is).
Replay, and look if it's going okay. If you feel unsafe without Norton active, search for different VA's like Nod32, AVG, etc.
That's quite the paradox, how could you nerf nerf when the nerf is nerfed. But how would the nerf be nerfed when the nerf is nerfed? This allows the nerf not to be nerfed since the nerf is nerfed? But if the nerf isn't nerfed, it could still nerf nerfs. But as soon as the nerf is nerfed, the nerf power is lost. So paradoxally it the nerf nerf lost its nerf, while it's still nerfed, which cannot be because the nerf was unable to nerf.
I tried reinstalling with my old STO disk, but it seems that launcher is no longer compatible with server. I had to use ARC version. Fortunately I have other computers with good load ups of original version.

I use MSE. It's worked quite well so far. The price was economical too.

back in early 2000's and didnt know any better as a kid, my father ran norton on his computer, after pestering him over a bit that norton was the problem with his whole setup, eventually i proved it was the case, have not used norton since.
norton used to slow things down big time, cause errors and hard lock ups with the computer back then. i doubt norton software has changed, best avoid it to be sure.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

Yea... there are plenty of good free AV programs out there to choose from. Heck... I have MSE and Malwarebytes, as sometimes... having a secondary thing to scan with can help in case the primary active one doesn't catch anything.
