Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
no... the lockboxes already have enough, not to mention the lobi store. we have enough reasons to open it, and you don't want to further alienate the players who do not wish to open them.. (remember, not every player who hates lockboxes is trying to be a freeper. some do not like the idea of them, so they simply do not ever open them. they spend their money on stuff they want to spend money on.)
gating more of the game through lockboxes is a stupid idea.
So looking this over what do you think? Do you want to see this in STO? What do you want to see on the STO bonus lockbox bonus card?
I want a "Make It Rain" emote that you get from the lockbox bonus cards. That way I can go through the Exchange on ESD and drop energy credits in everybody's inventory.
It'd be like a disco ball. Only people would get free money from me. Little energy credits flying out of the palm of my hand.

Just like the rep system, what the lockbox system really needs is missions where some that stuff is actually necessary. Challenges that can be overcome by having certain items and/or abilities, rather than a flat plain of easy you can fly over using whatever.

I became aware of this shortly after it went live.
And my first thought was, no, don't bring this to STO!
My second thought was they're going to bring it it STO anyway!
Due to the incredibly low reward from the boxes, I regard them as unpleasant at best.
I open them for lobi and that's the level of my interest, since I am painfully aware the chances of getting a ship, high amounts of lobi or something else really useful are so low as to be a form of taunting.
So I'm not a fan of bringing them even more into the spotlight with something like this.
Bees like honey, they don't like vinegar.

So to incentivize the boxes, you make it so that if you open a Ferengi, Cardassian, and then Dominion box in order. You would also automatically get say one piece of a cardassian uniform?
IE. Boots, pants, gloves, jacket, etc?
Say the next set has some of the improved Tal shiar pieces, etc?
I see no real down side. The boxes are in game. The uniform pieces probably there too.It opens new options for people willing to do a little work for it and it would encourage more key use for Cryptic.
Those that do not approve of the boxes don't participate and thus did no work so, no gain.
Simple.

No thanks. STO is bad enough as it is with the lockboxes IMO. These look to be a desperate attempt to get people to fork over cash for a dying game to me.
That's exactly what is. CO gets no new missions, no new powers, no new zones or areas, nothing of any substance. They get maybe a handful of costumes and lockboxes with vehicles in them. This is just an attempt to get people to spend a little more on a game that gets next to nothing new.

Example.
And another example.

Iconians makes it rain!
You, sir, just want all of those cute little cartoony girls following you around all day. For shame.
Now, if you will excuse me, my Nyssa is looking up your address to stalk you all proper-like.
Wouldn't be the first person in the game to look for Iconians. In fact I think that's what the latest FE's are all about.
It doesn't help that the pictures in the blog entry don't show.
But just doesn't sound good to me.
No offense, but that is a horrible idea.

This. Exactly.
I'd rather see the JJ-Verse Enterprise in STO... As T5... With a battle cloak...
With all the "magic" in STO, it plays more like Spelljammer than Star Trek anyway...

Nope, nada..
Relatedly, I would do bad things for a Spelljammer MMO.
