Okay I will never complain about monthly sub games again.
I got into this game in December of last year (I was here for beta and the 1st week but got out of it). To date I have spent over $1k on this game!
Micro transactions are like crack. There was just so much shiney and the lock boxes I could not control myself.
I didnt spend this much playing another MMO for 5 years (not counting expansions).
I was an adict and now I'm over it...now I just have to get 5 years out of this game without paying another dime.
Like my wise son said "Dad never spend real money on a FTP game".

Good luck, in 2 years youl be getting instagibbed and raging like I am now, 2012 best in slot means ****.
Now I max out all the time. I have 4 toons 3 of which I only use for Dil farming, so it adds up pretty fast.
It only took me a grand to figure it out.
So out of curiosity, you mine all 8k? and how long does that take you, on 1 toon.
Hope you got some good mining music.

Ice mining? :P:D
I will admit, it doesn't work quite as well when mining with a laser...

Yes, addictions are hard to live with. I understand. I used to be addicted to the Hokey-Pokey but I turned myself around.
Yup.
That's what it's all about.
As long as you don't start spending your kids education fund on new ships, I think you're doing fine
(I just realised that I sound like a planted Cryptic shill)
I say if it made/makes you happy, then you are all good.
You Sir have just won the internet
Thank you for brightening my day.

Most of it was spent converting Zen to Dil to get my fleet to Tier V...we're fully completed and did it in less then a year. I've slowed down a lot now but every now and then...hehe...don't worry it's just my disposable income, I'm not using mortgage money or anything

I am guessing that when the OP stated he max out all the time he means getting the full 1,000 dilithium, not maxing out his 8k refining quote. However, that is merely a guess...
====================================
For my KDF toon I can typically max out the 8k daily quota within 1 hour excluding travel time between destinations. Travel time might add 10 minutes at worse. The following is my 1 hour grind which starts in Eta Eridani. This excludes the time I devoted search for Doff missions that rewards contraband. Also, I have not progressed very far into the story line. I have only recently completed the Wasteland story arc. Therefore, this excludes many other ways of maxing out the daily 8k dilithium quota. For example, I do not do any of the Deferi missions that rewards dilithium because I have not reached that point in the story.
1. Turn in Contraband at Ganalda Station. 2,000 dil after 4 hours. 1 minute.
2. Queue up the "Officer Investigation Report" daily repeatable mission and do the "Vulture Wheel" Spotlight Foundry mission. 960 dil + 1,440 = 2,400 dil. 8 minutes speed run.
3. Asteroid Mining in Beta Ursae. 1,000 dil. 10 minutes
4. KDF Academy - Path to 2409 Quiz. 480 dil. 1 minute.
5. Borg Elite STF - Infected: The Conduit. 960 dil. 20 minutes.
6. Nimbus III - All three daily missions. 1520 dil combined. 15 minutes.
The above works out to 8,280 dilithium in a total of 55 minutes; excluding travel time. I do the Borg Elite STF mission when I am on Qo'Nos because if my ship is damaged I can easily get it repaired.
If you do not want to do the Borg Elite STF, then skip that. After you are done with Nimbus III repeat step #2. You will only get the 960 this time for doing the "Officer Investigation Report" repeatable daily. The rewards for Spotlight Foundry missions have a 20 hour cool down.
Yeah, that's me too. I've been a lifer pretty much since the game launched and over the past four years I've probably dropped at least $1K and probably closer to $2K on STO all together (including the lifetime sub itself, mind you). But as with you, this is pretty much the only game I play on any sort of regular basis anymore. (I do have a PS3 but mainly use it as a Blu-Ray player.)
I do buy keys for lockboxes (though I passed on the Hirogen LBs and am doing the same for Undine LBs), but have gotten enough DOff mini-packs from them over time that I haven't needed to buy any full packs - all my toons' DOff rosters are maxed out or close to it now, almost entirely from the mini-packs and rare/very rare special DOffs I got from the lockboxes. As for ships, I've also bought the Odyssey, Vesta and Kumari bundles, and the LoR Legacy pack, and a few other Z-Store ships, but nowadays I'm more interested in Fleet Refits and Retrofits, so for the time being I'll be spending my Zen mainly on Fleet Modules instead of ships.

Yeah, that is cool advice. Especially if you want to stop playing a FTP game. I mean someone has to pay for it..... :P
He should (providing he's 50) run the Voth BZ. You can generally make over 8K in an hour.
And whoever said the an ISE takes 20 minutes...there isn't even that amount of time on the clock. You should be able to complete an ISE, even with a mediocre team, in about 6 - 8 minutes. Most teams these days can get it done in 3 - 5.
Also, like someone else said, if you have a disposable income, then buy what you want. But if you're starting to spend bill money, savings, grocery money...etc...then I'd back off the game entirely.
A lot of people on Battlestar Galactica easily spent over 1000 - way over - on their ship.
Just take it easy you'll be fine.
