Careful, guys. Politics is against the Forum ToS. ;)

Besides, I think 'puppet' is a little harsh. It suggests she's being used and manipulated by Russia. I find it much more likely that the Crimean Government genuinely wants those close ties with RUssia, but that the majority of Crimean citizens don't. That referendum was a total farce.

And I've just turned this into a political thread. Damn it!

Very true. I don't support what Russia is doing though. America is agitating the Russians, and that doesn't end well.

Someone has to rein Russia in. Economic sanctions from their biggest trade partners; the EU and the US, are the only way to go. Obama's making the right call by steering away from an armed conflict. Neither Russia nor America is going to start WWIII anytime soon.

Very very cute. Not every day you see a cute chick in a fancy uniform like that, it looks nice.

I think I went a little off topic...

Yes, that was a wonderful move. Now Russia can buy back shares from foreign investors at a cheap price.

I am getting the impresson that Russia outsmarted the West here. And deservedly so. Why did we make promises to not extend the Nato in the East again and then not hold to them? What good reason has Russia to trust us, considering our own behavior towards them?

If we're the good guys, we should have behaved better. But we aren't, we're no less crooks then Putin is. He might just have played he game a little better. This time.

She isn't a "Putin puppet", stop watching faux news some of you. She and other Crimeans just want nothing to do with the new Ukraine government that seized power in an illegal coup, nothing wrong with that.

Except when the legitimacy of said referendum comes into question. But I agree, she isn't a puppet of Putin, however, you know that American war for independence? You know, that 'illegal coup'? He was ousted by the parliament. That's completely legal.

The referendum is legitimate, it was observed by several EU MP's who were quoted saying so.
The coup was illegal according to Ukraine's constitution, their parliament can't oust a leader elected by the people like that, and not suprisngly, large parts of the country won't accept this.

Of course. It is just a weird coincidence that thousands of Russian troops poured into Crimea the day the Ukrainian government changed and forced the population to hold a referendum in which they could only vote for secession. Seems legit. Putin democracy is best democracy.

The referendum is also illegal according to Ukraine's constitution. A referendum which impacts the borders of Ukraine must be open to all Ukrainians. Crimea completely ignored that.

The legitimacy of the referendum comes into question when you consider how many Crimeans boycotted it because it was illegal. And the referendum was farcical as it did not give Crimea the option of remaining part of Ukraine.

It also doesn't excuse Russia invading Ukrainian soil before the referendum even took place and blockading Ukrainian bases and ports on what was at that time Ukrainian soil. Russia are hardly the victims here.

Ok, guys, stop or I report this thread to the mods.

Here are the facts, deal with them as you wish:

--The eastern Ukraine and the Crimea region both have a substantial population of ethnic Russians.

--Putin is a KGB-trained strongman who wants control of the Black Sea trade routes because he's economically screwed otherwise.

--The previous leader of the Ukraine (Viktor Yanukovich) was very, very pro-Russia, and was controversial for most of his term in office due to his heavy-handed tactics and corruption (granted, the other options were corrupt, too).

--Ukraine had a mostly peaceful revolution in which Yanukovich was removed from power by a pro-EU block in Parliament supported by most of the western Ukraine, which has very few ethnic Russians.

--The Crimea region, backed heavily by Russia, voted to join Russia, at least in part due to a boycott of the polls by the Tatar ethnic group.

--Russian forces were present in the Crimea region during, before, and after the vote, which makes the results suspicious at best.

These are the facts. Let's agree on those and stop arguing before I report this thread to Q.

Yes. Even though that makes me a hypocrite.

The goal of my post was to get people to stop slinging mud before I felt it necessary to warn a mod.

Anyway, they seem to have stopped, so I can go back to grinding MU in peace without my conscience bugging me.
