I have read the novelization of what was intended for the film and that was one of the more disturbing things I read. Watching the film while creepy I felt they should have kept the some of the things in the book.

Yeah, apparently the director and much of the film's crew regret some of the cuts that they were pressured into. Basically, after the unfinished rough cut of the film failed to wow a test audience (and possibly traumatized a fair number of studio executives), they were told to cut half an hour or more. There's quite a bit (from the director's original cut) that has not been widely seen.
I feel like the film had a huge amount of atmosphere, and a very unique visual language. I've always found the Event Horizon herself unnerving, but somehow majestic in her own way. To me, that really added to the film's creepiness. Did that come across in the novelization?
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.

Actually yes the novel did have it as it was present to a degree through the character's eyes including the "good" doctor. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that the studio did that. Studios do that a lot as far as pressuring edits and such. That is part of the business. Though I did not know about a directors cut. I am going to have to take a look at it.
I will say this I actually don't hate the film, as a horror film I thought it did what it was supposed to do. Creep the hell out of me.
Interesting that I never thought about how that influenced my villains and such.. Funny:D
Event Horizon was the first film to introduce me to Laurence Fishburne. I remember going to movie at Star Theater in Michigan with my Dad to go see it. I remember this specifically because we saw two movies back to back that day - Event Horizon, followed by Mimic. Both were great films.
Anyways, glad you got to watch EH - it's only of those films that inspired some of my LEGO spaceship mocs.
Wow.... watched event horizon at 2 am thinking it was some cheesy remake of voyager or something.... holy....TRIBBLE. I didnt sleep a single hour after that. Anyone else watch it?
Ah, thanks for reminding me of that one.. Haven't seen it for long, but think I have it in the old dvd collection somewhere.
Great movie but I was and still am confused as to where the ship went.
Someone told me that it punched a hole in space/time and went to Hell. I'm thinking more that the dimension it went to was so badly physically and mentally warped that the crew just went mad.
Either way the suspense and constant curiosity as to what happen on the other side was great. =3
There are two ways of looking at it.
1. The actual idea that it went to hell and back and went back again. It brought something with it and became alive.
2. It went somewhere that black holes have inside its Event Horizon a place where time literally means nothing. The Laws of Physics mean nothing at all. And brought back an entity that was in that dimension.
Now. For me I think along the lines of both.. in some ways. 2 for me makes the most sense and number 1 is the biblical representation of it.
On a comical note I was surprised Pinhead was not there having a bit of fun.

I thought Orions were green, not Romulans.
