Game Improvements

Over the course of it's development, the game has improved dramatically from the state it was in upon its release. The missions have become more intuitive and are more plot driven than "Take out 7 waves of enemies." But what is the future for the game?

On it's current engine it can only progress so much. Will there be a Star Trek Online II? Or will they just release one massive update one day that will update the engine to cryengine 3 or something?

I like that their moving more towards plot driven missions but I would be cool if they actually effected you in freespace and had more dramatic consequences in the scheme of things. I would also definitely like to see some improvement on the gameplay and graphics side of things. Such as more realistic engagements, the ground ones in particular. I know a lot of other MMO's are like this but it would be nice to see some more tactical elements implemented. I find it repetitive and un-engaging when all I can do is lock on to the enemy and spam some buttons to shoot and throw grenades and such.

You can't really take cover or go about anything tactically, all you can do is shoot and hope that your MK XII shields and armor hold up. Also the NPCs are really bad. You can mow down an entire squad and set off 100 explosions but the two Klingons in your line of sight don't think anything's going on because your 10 feet away from them. It would be nice if they were more responsive and you could do stuff like shoot the tractor beam holding up a crate across the room and draw them away from the door, or sneak up behind someone and take them out the quiet way. The best example of what I'm talking about would be mass effect, it is similar the game in the sense that the enemies still have shields in addition to their health but you preform tactical maneuvers.

Space combat is pretty good already, there's not much to do there and any drastic changes would ruin the whole thing. One thing I would like to see is dynamic ship damage, this would also be neat in ground combat but it really needs to be in space combat. In other words you get hit in certain areas and you have a hull breach there or a system is damaged. Like in Star Trek Legacy, you could have a menu where you could prioritize the repair of these systems similar to the way you already prioritize power distribution. You can already get damaged in the game but it rarely happens, I think it should happen more often and there should be a visual with it.

The two last things have already been brought up in previous threads but I would like to add to them. The first being character voices.

One of the things that really makes the game feel like the game has holes in it is the fact that your character has no voice. This really takes away from the action and drama of the sequence when other NPCs are talking and then you respond with text. The argument for this is it would take far too long to develop enough voices. But would it really be that difficult to to create 3-4 voices to choose from?

To my knowledge most of the races in star trek don't have very different voices. The only one I can think of is the Gorn, but there have been numerous missions where a Gorn NPC has been voiced. Also I believe NPCs should be able to talk as well when they yell in combat. I can never really tell what their saying and sometimes miss valuable plot details. Most of the NPC talk is generic phrases such as "You will die!" anyway. I do agree that it would be impossible to voice the foundry missions. But It would be great if you could have more dialogue to go along with missions.

The last thing I want to talk about is custom ships.

Ever since the game has released people have been begging for this. I love the look of some of the lower class ships and it would be beyond cool if i could turn my 3 weapons slot TOS Constitution into a beam boat of death. Also I'm not just talking about the outside and weapons/consoles I'm talking about the inside as well. I've always wanted to be able to have more customization on the inside of my ship instead of choosing a bridge and the layout size. I would be awesome if you could have themed interiors to the type of ship you have. They've already done it with the TOS Constitution and the DS9 Defiant pack. It would also be cool if you could change the style of uniform of your crewmembers to match your bridge crew. Much in the way you can set your fleet uniform.

Well now that you've listened to my ramblings, I'd like to hear what you have to say. The more comments the merrier.

Also, thank you projectfrontier. I was a little short on time and I didn't have time to break it up into paragraphs. Should be a little easier on the eyes now.

I write a lot...but at least I use paragraphs and pictures to break it up. I got through 3 lines and literally got dizzy.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.

Its reable but my brain just refuses to process that, what I got is "this game isnt a CoD enough, Cryptic should go do that".

I don't think the game isn't CoD enough. I just think there should be more tactical elements to it (on the ground that is).

Basically what I'm trying to say is the NPCs should be more responsive, there should be more tactical elements in play such as taking cover, and more emphasis should be put on player skill than fancy weapons and equipment.

This is labeled an RPG, though- a game type where by definition, your skills are close to completely irrelevant since everything is calculated in terms of your character's in-game skills.
