I love working with the exchanges and trade, besides programming a new LCARS interface and building a new company around it, it's much of what I used to do.
I play multiple characters. And there's clearly dynamicism associated with what duty officers you bring on and the missions and assignments you get.
AS Spock would say, it's fascinating.
I'm in the process of creating intentional imbalance. Telling a story that my Bajoran Captain's a paranoid emotional freak and has been having nightmares of being a human and remembering being abducted off Earth on March 3rd 2014 by a Borg invasion.
The story I'm telling details her attempts to figure out who's influencing her mind. So she's made a command decision to ban all contact with Vulcan for her and her crew, that didn't work so she banned contact with anyone with Andorian heritage because of their Vulcan lineage. She just recently decided to get rid of anyone who was not Bajoran with the exception of humans, but intends to get rid of her human crew too.
She's removed all her shields, weapons, and armor, and takes only non violent missions, and I've actually seen assignments change - it was subtle at first but undeniable based on how I played the game.
So in this effort to see 'what happens next' when I fill my crew with Bajorans, I'm trying to find replacement crew working with your exchanges.
In working with your exchanges. can you add in a feature to filter by 'species' for duty officers? I'd like to try this same tactic with my other character, but the Bajoran is my primary I'm having fun with for now.
What would be nice is to have a 'filter' by 'area'. That is, if you select duty officers, then you can filter on 'telepathic' to obtain someone with that skill. Or 'Bajoran' so you can find that race easily. Multiple selection, much like how you manage duty officers on the Duty officer's screen would be cool!
Oh and a final add: A filter by price range! If I want to pick up a bunch of anything it would be cool to have the ability to limit what you see much like an auction web site like ebay does !
To get more bajoran officers, have you tried the Officer exchange program DOFF assignment near bajor?
These are the Voyages on the STO forum, the final frontier. Our continuing mission: to explore Pretentious Posts, to seek out new Overreactions and Misinformation , to boldly experience Cynicism like no man has before.......
Filtering by species and profession is possible, just put "Bajoran Tac" in the search field, you'll get nothing but tactical officers who are from Bajor. Sci and Eng, of course, for the rest.
Searching by other attributes would be nice, I agree.
Just curious, if your toon is plagued by dreams of being human, wouldn't they be the first species to get rid of?
Whoops. DOffs, not BOffs. Yeah. That'd be cool to do, too.
BTW, LCARS is owned by CBS. When Google came out with an app that looked like it, CBS was able to make them remove it. Twice. Building a business around someone else's property is ill-advised without talking to he owners about permission. Just FYI.

You mean Romulans. Andorians have no anscestral connection to Vulcans. Romulans, on the other hand, are the descendants of Vulcans who chose to leave Vulcan during the Sundering. Vulcans and Romulans also share some commonalities with Rigelians.

Very, very unlikely. If you're trying to say that removing all your equipment has somehow influenced the Duty Officer assignments you're getting, i'm afraid you're seeing patterns that aren't there. A number of factors influence Duty Officer missions, but your character's Roleplayed background, active Duty officers and equipment setup are not among them.

Took a long time to get to the point, but it's a fair point. I concur with this bit, and i'd add that it'd be nice if when i'm searching for a Bridge officer, I didn't get bombarded with cheap KDF ones while playing as a Fed.

It's open source. I'm giving away the interface for free, so there's nothing infringable they can litigate over. I'm building the businesses around the services provided which deploy this in companies which will clearly come at a cost, and there's nothing legally they can do about that. Putting it into other companies is legally fine too, they aren't making money on the interface, they are merely using it to operate their business.
In any case. I'd agree with you, if I were selling the product as a product. But I am not.
I've worked with too many lawyers if you can't tell ;-)
NO reason to ask for permission when you're honoring their work and working around the silly legal system which has been deconstructive lately. Plus, it's actually reinforced the concept of open source anyways.

That unfortunately does not work for duty officers, you know, those grunts who do the assignment work?
Agreed about the Borg dreams. I've written an entire story around the Borg using energy via Vulcan mind melding techniques to assimilate those who might otherwise be unassimilatable. Rachel (my toon) exists in between realities 'quantum jumping' per se between many many alternate realities which makes it impossible for the Borg to assimilate her directly, because her mind simply relocates her body into another reality thus protecting her - like my other toon. So the Borg are trying to assimilate her through energy and the dreams she's having are a direct reflection of what they are trying to do.
No I mean Andorians. Memory Alpha details the connection and bloodlines.
I'm afraid you're wrong - at least in terms of there being any species connection between Andorians and Vulcans. In fact, in Memory Alpha's article on Andorians, Vulcan crops up once;
Denise and Michael Okuda offer an explanation for the Andorians' differing appearances: in a DVD text commentary for TAS: "Yesteryear", they write, "It may be that Andorians have different ethnic groups, with different skin colors just like humans; after all, in ENT: "The Aenar" we saw some Andorians have white skin." This aligns with both Vulcans and Bajorans being shown with different pigmentation, making diversity of skin color more than just a Terran trait.
Similarly, the article on Vulcans details their history of skirmishes with neighbouring Andoria but does not at any time say outright, imply or even suggest that Andorians and Vulcans are descended from the same genetic anscestors. Even Memory Beta's article doesn't mention a genetic connection between them, so I don't quite know where you're getting the information on their supposed shared "bloodline" from.
As detailed in Enterprise, the Vulcans and Andorians have a history of conflict, but that's it.
That being said, if you're basing your decisions on anyone who ever had contact with Vulcan and Vulcans, then you're probably better off dismissing your entire crew.
You're just a machine. And machines can be broken.

She's basing her decisions, paranoia, and 'what is reality' questions in an alternate reality where there's alternate memory alphas. I wasn't intending you to 'correct' me on my own story, but that's ok, you're more than welcome to try! Read my excerpt from above about the Borg, there's no one direct lineage if you're hopping between realities, which is what she's not aware of yet - her heritage as a human has a lot to do with her mind trying to find the 'master' linear reality and the Borg are trying to prevent this.
Make me giveaway my story already! Whassup with you? ;-)
Yeah, the only factor which influences which doff missions are available at any given time are the individual cooldowns on the missions. The rest is random.
Otherwise, it would be impossible for players to communicate to each other which missions are available in which sectors. Which they do all the time.
...talking to players is like being a mall Santa. Everyone immediately wants to tell you all of the things they want, and you are absolutely powerless to deliver 99% of them.
I wasn't intending you to 'correct' me on my own story, but that's ok, you're more than welcome to try!
You're right, I apolagise. And I forgive you for posting about your alternate-reality fiction - that directly contradicts established canon - as if it were common knowledge.
I still don't know why you included it in the thread, though. If you want to show off your character backgrounds and other fiction, then the Ten Forward sub-forum is the accepted place for it.
As for the request, I can see how it would be useful to you and everyone else, but that's reason enough to ask for a feature - that it'd be really useful. Your character's back story - interesting as it may be - isn't necessary to make the point that such a feature would be useful.

The character is said to be living inside their own paranoid delusions. Wise authors advise upcoming authors to "write what you know." Make of that what you will.
Or maybe STO is written with self-modifying code that only works for the OP.

You're cute. And remind me of Dan Akroyd in that movie Dragnet.

Most people in the STO forums assume (and rightly so) that when one is referring to Memory Alpha, they are referring to Memory Alpha, the Website. If you'rs talking about something else, it is on you to clarify. Instead of "No I mean Andorians. Memory Alpha details the connection and bloodlines," perhaps "No I mean Andorians. In one of the alternate realities, Memory Alpha details the connection and bloodlines." No need to spoil your story.
If you'd like to continue posting misleading statements, I highly rscommend this website: Google.com. I created it for just such googlings on. In an alternate reality.

I make a lot of assumptions, just so I don't assume too much, when you say 'OP' what is this in reference to?
Thanks for listening, by the way. I know I can be a bit... Aggressive with my perspectives, but if we can't change 'the system' to have more fun with it on our terms (not theirs), who will?

lol. smart a$$.
My point was, what's with the overanalysis of my perspective? That is: what's with the obsessive need to correct me, when - as you all said - the meat was in the feature request.
I still don't see the point in 'fixing' people's perspective and view of reality. It's kinda... well. childish.

OP, in this case is Original Poster/Original Post. That's you and the 1st post in this thread.
As far as working to change this system, I think the best you can realistically do is find out how to have fun within the system, which actually takes more creativity than constantly trying to push your way out of this box.

Why the overanalysis? Well, some would call it critical thinking. As in not just taking in everything they read as fact, but weighing the known facts vs what is being presented and deciding to keep that info as part of our new reality or to say "No, I don't agree with that." It is a valued skill, they teach Critical Thinking in our Education Systems. To not expect others to do this with things you post in a publicly accessable forum is... well...
Childish.
EDIT: Usually, the OP is more invested in keeping a thread on topic, but I'm going to help you. Hey, everyone! Check out this great idea for a Feature for the Exchange:

uhh...NO. if a lawyer told you this you need to can his TRIBBLE pronto. it has nothing to do with selling anything, it has everything to do with the fact that you are distributing some based on an IP that someone owns. You most certainly DO need permission to do that. There is quite a bit there they can litigate over. You don't need to be charging anything for something in order to get nailed for infringement. That is pretty common knowledge, even to non lawyers.

On another note.
To be critical is to be judgmental of another's perspective or some could say inconsiderate.
Your system of indoctrination would teach you to believe this is a positive?
Just like a dead man hanging from a cross with blood gushing out of him is showing signs of respect for one's contributions?

Sorry, sir but you are incorrect.
Fan fiction should be a very simple proof for you.
When you are not compensated for your work you have made no legal infringements on the copyright holder..
And yes, I consulted a lawyer. I'm a pretty bored former Intellectual Property lawyer and now a programmer and game player to boot :-)
Legally, you do not need permission to write fan fiction, nor to create things based on original ideas and concepts created by someone else as long as you're not trying to make that product or service profitable. It's a nice little loophole that allows new artists to make money on derivative works, particularly when an 'estate' owns intellectual property when the original creators are long since dead, by first creating derivative works handing them out free and then creating goods or services based on the derivative work.
The programming community's a bright community, and embracing the derivative work stance pretty strongly - you can check out a few of the open source projects and standards development for LCARS here:
All perfectly legal. The point being: creating derivative works' based on visual concepts is not infringement. Gene Roddenberry himself would be turning over in his grave if he heard people weren't working to further his concepts and ideas based on fear of legal backlash.
There's no fear. And there's a lawyer standing in their corner who will back them up too.
And just to be perfectly clear. CBS owns IP for Star Trek. Not for everything that appears within it. So even if they did own 'LCARS', which they do not, they cannot by virtue of the IP they own cover absolutely everything depicted in the show. IP doesn't work that way. Using your poor logic causes something us lawyers refer to as a 'slippery slope' - and would ultimately lead to CBS owning the rights for the human image itself since it appears within Star Trek. That's poor logic at it's finest.
CBS Studios Inc. claims to hold the copyright on LCARS. Google was sent a DMCA letter to remove the Android app called tricorder [7] since its use of the LCARS interface was un-licenced. The application was later re-uploaded under a different title, but it was removed again.
Good luck with your LCARS thing, and good night

You're like a bad AI with no ability to question why you type these things down. Instead reacting like any scripted AI should. With conformity to the if-then-else logic you were scripted with.
Didn't read it. Other lawyers are magnificent at understanding propaganda and trying to establish precedence through untrusted and biased sources, which wiki's are absolutely wonderful for.
I'll refer anyone who refutes my position and challenge them to legal proceedings in a court of law. It's really that simple a case.
That and if they do try to do anything about it, it's like whack a mole. Where they gonna start with this one, this is already a lost cause for them.

But I understand why that respect cannot be reciprocated. You have war on the mind.

Far better, I suppose, than believing that somehow filling one's inventory with vendor trash (lockboxes) will do anything other than fill one's inventory with vendor trash. But truly, good luck with overhauling the game's economy by collecting garbage.

I've noticed you tend to blur the lines between reality and imagination.
You do know there never was a cat, right?
Reality is imagined.
No blurring necessary.
Life's a choose your own adventure. And 'fiction' is nothing more than a choice of realities you can indulge in and make your own much like McDonald's is a choice of meals.
To you, there was no cat. To me, it's a thought experiment, and the cat definitely existed. And got a little ticked off at people like you saying he doesn't exist and if he does then he's probably dead!

Whassup with you? ;-)
Otherwise, it would be impossible for players to communicate to each other which missions are available in which sectors. Which they do all the time.
"Just the facts Ma'am, just the facts"
This is how I talk and discuss ideas and concepts with people in real life, perhaps I'm a little wordy at times, my friends are the same, but I appreciate the 'correctional feedback' as well on my personality and how it should conform more to yours so you will accept me.
On a less sarcastic note, thank you for the pointer on tenforward!
If you'd like to continue posting misleading statements, I highly rscommend this website: Google.com. I created it for just such googlings on. In an alternate reality.
As to the rest, I saw the name on the thread when I clicked fo first enter and to say I was not disappointed would be dishonest.
It's kinda... well. childish.
As far as working to change this system, I think the best you can realistically do is find out how to have fun within the system, which actually takes more creativity than constantly trying to push your way out of this box.
Better a smart one than a dumb one.
Get their permission first or you'll likely end up with a considerable headache down the road
Boxes aren't meant for staying in.
Ask Shrodinger's cat. You think he stayed in his after being tormented by that scientist for so long with his 'thought experiments?'
On another note.
To be critical is to be judgmental of another's perspective or some could say inconsiderate.
Your system of indoctrination would teach you to believe this is a positive?
Just like a dead man hanging from a cross with blood gushing out of him is showing signs of respect for one's contributions?
Food for thought.
The programming community's a bright community, and embracing the derivative work stance pretty strongly - you can check out a few of the open source projects and standards development for LCARS here:
http://www.lcarsdeveloper.com/downloads.php
here:
http://www.lcars47.com/p/lcars-101.html
and here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lcars-wt/
I'm on my way out of this thread, but i'll just leave this here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LCARS#Legal
Good luck with your LCARS thing, and good night
So is "I got rid of all my avatar's weapons, then did a bunch of exploration missions, so obviously the game adapts its missions to my playstyle." You're like a bad AI with no ability to question why you type these things down.
Where they gonna start with this one, this is already a lost cause for them.
and thank you for the well-wishing!
Over & Out
You're cute. I'm not judging you for continuing to play like it's a war based game.
You do know there never was a cat, right?
I see what you did there.
