I start up STO, it loads the CRYPTIC thing normally and then the Legacy of New Romulus logo shows up all disorted and red and blue. Then it loads and it's just a black screen with the STO cursor there though and movable. How can I fix this?
Mine isn't exactly the same, but quite similar. During an Elite STF mission today - and, OF COURSE, seconds before we took down the final Cube - my screen went totally black. I could hear everything: the Borg, the weapons fire, etc.; I could even (by making a guess where it was) could diminish the screen to see my PC desktop - all present and accounted for, and I even opened the STO Forums to see if it was some sort of graphical or connectivity thing on my end: nope.
Well, in trying to sort it out, it obviously kicked me, because there was my desktop screen; no STO. I logged back in, chose the same character, and it put me right back in the Sibiran System where the STF took place ("The Conduit (Elite)," by the way, in case it is a map problem), and there were the messages: "Congratulations, Captain - You Have received Omega Marks..." and the "Optional Objective Successful" tab. But? NO MARKS, NO Neural Processors; NOTHING, even though it said I received them (should have received 90 Omega Marks with my bonuses, the Optional, and the Mission, according to my logs)!
I can't recall if this is the same map, but it happened once before. Of course, during that play, the mission had only just started, and when I couldn't sort out the problem, I rebooted, thinking it was my comp - I was taken back to the map wherein I launched the PvE - didn't expect anything different - and it showed no queue count-down nor any "leaver penalty," which I almost expected.
So, in a way, glad there are at least a couple of others who have had/are having the same issues (feel bad for you guys, too), but what gives?

I updated my flash and video drivers. Rebooted a half dozen times. Still no change. I actually estimated (guessed) where my character is in the list and where the "Play" button was and the game sounded as like it began. I used my E key to increase speed and it sounded as though the game responded correctly. But I am blind. Maybe I am trying out a new visor. Oh well. I enjoyed the game up until now.
i am also having this issue but the only difference is my i cant update the drivers on my hrapgics card (geforce G200) and i cant replace it coz i have a HP touchsmart 600 PC which is an all in 1 system with no tower so the parts arnt changeable
on start up of sto and it is the loading star trek online/legacy of romulus screens if you are in full screen mode for sto before it right as it starts loading the star trek online screen exit full screen go into windowed mode/ press start on keyboard look at top right corner click the restore down this will put sto into windowed mode, if already in windowed mode just skip to next part.
From lower right hand side of the game drag up and across to left upper corner till sto is as small as possible and let go wait for sto to load onto the character select screen then click the maximize button to play in windowed maximized mode until on character select screen do nothing don't have other things open browser's youtube whatnot it should load sto without turning into a black screen.
the issue it self is graphics display driver crashing on the final legacy of romulus screen before character select screen once on character select by how i said above you can play without any black screen again or should the smaller size of sto on load up seems to avoid the crash/black screen on sto maybe just less to load up on that last jump from lor screen to character select, who knows... but good luck hope this helps out should do for geforce/nvidia users unsure on others but give it a try however if it does you will have to load sto every time like this but it should load with no problems/display driver crashing, let me know how it goes
ok something weird happened i just tried what you said but as i tried to minimize i got an error report saying 'FATAL ERROR: Direct3d Driver returned error code (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL) while resseting the device' so i closed it all down re-opened the game and it loaded up fine now i have been having the black screen issue for a while but it doesnt always happen the last 2 day have been the worst for it and i dunno why but yeah im doing what you said but i gota resize on the legac of romulus screen to avoid crashes
BUT thankyou for this amazing peice of help now i dont have to worry bout the zen i purchased the other day going to waste lol
I was loading star trek online up it came up with cryptic that loaded then legacy of Romulus loaded up but then after that my screen just went black I could hear music but nothing else can someone help me or give me a idea of what to do .
Hey guys so I found out the source of our problem I think. So i got a new computer monitor just the other day then all this happened. I couldn't get the game to appear in the character select screen no matter what I changed on the graphics card and even completely re installed the game. What I found was when I changed the resolution on my computer monitor way down to 1280 X 720 all a sudden I could see the character select screen and the rest of the game. So maby we can collectively find a solution to this so we dont have to destroy our graphics just to play this dumb game lol! Try this our and let me know if anyone else has success.
