I just managed it to safe the Captains life at the beginning of the mission 'A Step between the Stars'. So he did not get 'redshirted' by the Voth - which I'm proud of.:D
But now I can't continue the mission - due to mission design - which is odd
Should I reload the mission?
But than, now that I know how to save the captain, should I let him get killed - to get the mission rewards? How much virtual rewards does a virtual life count?

This has been reported by at least one other--the captain can be saved, but then you can't continue the mission.
So, I think you're stuck. You're going to have to reload the mission, and this time, let the guy die. His mission in life will then be fulfilled. :P
I got stuck in a different place and had to start over.
Apparently, you can be "too close" to that door (in the room where you grab the EV suit) where the annoying doctor guy says "You might want to raise a shield before opening that door". So, if you get too close and then raise the shield, you're stuck between the shield and the door. I was 15 minutes into that 30 minute mission...had to start over. At least you only have to restart from the beginning.
One of those times that I wish "ghosting" were possible in STO.

Did you try the /stuck or the /killme commands? I know for a while they didnt work but, I got stuck a couple of times recently and they both worked fine. So I think they got them fixed.

First I've heard of it.
I'm writing this #$%^ down now, though. Thank you.
The capain already died, and you're just repeating a temporal event. Saving him thus causes a temporal causality loop which prevents continuation of the proper timeline and creates a second one where there is nothing to accomplish. As such, if you find you have saved the captain, please beam to your ship, drop the present timeline and then restart it from the beginning. The captain must die for the proper timeline to proceed.
It's a Fixed point A FIXED POINT it can't be changed without destroying everything
Until next episode, when its a companion that is in trouble, and then its all ok, what problem? Last episode i couldn't? Noooo, i'd defiantly remember that, so don't think about it, i can do it.

Why would you attempt to save a red shirt, you're taking away their sole purpose in this universe...realize they have kids to feed? What will their families do without their killed in action payment package.
My very first try at a Klingon mission, back in the days when "Bringing Down the House" was the first Klingon mission, suffered from a similar problem, in that the Evil Romulan Infiltrator absolutely has to kill the guy you're supposed to protect.
So, being efficient, dutiful and task-focused, my KDF toon went straight for E.R.I., determined to foil his evil schemes... and, being a ground tank like all my toons, she hammered away at him with her dual disruptor pistols until he dropped.
Only, of course, he didn't drop - just stood around with an empty health bar, looking peeved. And nobody else would do anything either. The guy I was supposed to be rescuing didn't even have the grace to look grateful.
I spent quite some time looking for a way to continue after that point. Finally, I gave up, looked for clues online, and found out what was actually meant to happen....
In The Time Machine, the whole reason the machine was built is because his dear fiancee dies... If he goes back in time to save her, the machine never gets built. No machine, no fiancee... A paradox...

they just did not take into account people would set up cover shields and things to protect him/her.
That part does make no sense whatsoever. You can:
Physically get in the way
Set up Cover Shields
Place the captain inside a shield generator bubble
Give a dose of various sci powers...
You'd think at the very least that should be a little accolade with an extra many-pipped grunt at your side as a result. It's touches like that which keep people gobbling it all up.
Similarly, when finding that voth exo-suit, why would you just... leave it? (in fact why are the solanae EV suits not those? Just look at those things!) Not so much as set a charge, take it, at worst let Cooper in there (which would certainly allow him to be a proper threat when he finally turns later in that cutscene). The EV suits are nice, but they're no Elemental.
The thing is also, if it was intended to save him, you would get a prompt to do so, or a hint at it. As it is, due to PLAYER knowledge (compared to Character knowledge), plus the fact that the assassin is using a proper attack, not an animation that is fired as part of a script, that one can block the deadly shot with a Cover shield, this is either an oversight by the content designer, or a glitch.

I'm not sure I like this kind of Kobayashi stuff - I don't want to loose against a cruel fate

"Jim, in order to set things straight again, Edith Keeler must die."
kind of sums it up from a canonical perspective.
"He's dead Jim." What a cruel world!

As it has been mentioned, the captains lot in life is to take the bullet for mission progression.

But they don't say what it is. Captain now can't be saved would be my guess, easier than adding in all the backend to make the captain come along.
Or maybe just stays behind with Sheld...er, Eric.
