The Flexibilty Of Starships

andihraveyandihravey Member Posts: 132 Arc User
Ive been on this game for over a year, and somthing that has really confused me is the lack of flexibilty when it comes to the ships.

Yes you can do builds and stuff, and thats brilliant, for those who know how to do them.

But what i am talking about is the "one size fits all" lay out.

I am a person, who logs in, buys what i think might be a decent ship, kit it out and have fun. But what i would really love is either a galaxy, or an intrepid, or maybe a nebula. But quite frankly i cant because the layout for the ships are rubbish.

Why cant WE the gamer choose???

What i mean by this is simple, We go, buy the ship, the devs choose how many weapons it has etc.

But when it comes to the eng, sci and tac consoles, we should be given a stack of 10 console squares which we can put where we want.

For example, i buy the galaxy, i have the 10 slots and decide to have 4 in eng, 2 in sci and 4 in tac. brilliant!!!. gonna love it, its gonna suit my gaming style and and i have the ship i want. someone else might buy it and would be able to have 3 eng, 4 sci and 3 tac, that would suit their style.

It would make the ships flexible and would give some of the older ships a new lease of life and in my opinion more enjoyable.

Its just an idea, and im just a bit confused as to why this isnt done. There could always be a "reset" option. and i wouldnt mind paying 500 zen for the reset token.

And yes some ships may need to have limits put on them to stop them been abused. Like some of the escorts. (maybe limit the number of consoles allowed in certain sections).

But like i said. just an idea. any thoughts?????????????

I've always hated the fact that ship stats are locked for their visuals.

Now I think an escort should never have more hull than a cruiser, or that pure science ships should not have comd tactical stations. There should be a certain limit to what a class should or should not do, but I wish there was much more flexibility in how we set them up.

You're favourite ship might be the intrepid, but you might hate the layout more than any other ship, so you're stuck between getting the ship you want and living with the stats, or getting the best stats on a ship you might find ugly.

There was talk about crafting ships at some point. so you take the ship visual you want and build the perfect set up within certain limitations. I think at this stage its our only hope as I cant see them changing every existing ship.

I have always thought this too. Heck pvper's should love the idea. Not knowing how someones ship is set up would make it more challenging then hey that guys in a science ship easy kill. I would love to be able to come up with some wild crazy builds. It would make the game more fun for me.

Okay to be the token naysayer.

And what happens when they build a ship with ten Tac consoles and max them out to over charge their weapons?

Nor should they be. Their ships would look weird.

Well, there are really 2 options. As i mentioned there are either some restrictions. so no escort can have any more than 4 or 5 tac stations etc.

or you create diminishing returns so by the time you get to the 6th or 7th you are adding so little that its hardly worth it, at great cost to defensive consoles.

Option 1 would be the better one I think. I dont think anyone is really asking to make any ship be anything. there should always be some restrictions of a ship. how high its hull goes. how fast it can turn etc but there really should be some freedom.

edit - thought of a third. have 5 or 6 set loadouts designated by cryptic and you choose the one you feel suits you the best. You pick your skin, then you pick your loadout to match. each one is balanced. not quite what the OP asked for but still gives people some variety to choose from.

like i said some restrictions might need to be in place. such as a max of either 4 or 5 slots or something to stop people abusing it and taking advantage

that was my original thought actually, you buy the console lay out you want with the fleet ship modules, and maybe for an extra fleet ship mod you can choose the skin you want. but when i spoke about this with a fleet member (who has his head up his rear) he said it would "not bring in the profit". but to be honest i think that excuse is rubbish, and i think they would restrict certain layouts to certain "classes" of ships. so i think the "build your own ship" would be a lot better.

More appropreatly when we REFIT a ship it actually REFITS THAT Ship so as its an upgrade to a ship we already have to a better more customized ship to fit YOUR needs as its captain.

Thats what we should be talking about with Fleet modules for Ship upgrades. You want us buying more Zen items THAT would be one of the key factors for me.

Adjusting duty stations or weapons layouts, Adjusting if you want 1 or 2 deflectors.

IDK I was always disappointed with the entire refit concept on fleets. So I go through a costly refit process and yet I still have teh original ship and the refit? that makes no sense..

But taking a good ship and upgrading it through a fleet refit to make it better, now THAT is logical. And cost effiecient and well worth Zen cost for fleet modules.

    Just saying...

The main reason about using fleet modules is that you DON'T have to use zen, people sell them on the exchange for around 7 mill ec.

So i thought again, more flexibility, dont have the zen?? use your ec's, no ec's?? save up or buy some zen.

I just think the whole process should be more in line with the players needs and resources, rrather than a one ship fits all, take it or leave attitude that seems to be there at the moment. its not nice and rather rude.

I started a thread about the same idea not to long ago, but it didn't get much attention - apart from those generic 'too much work, never happen' replies of course. *sadface*

But I do agree with you. Some way to determine what console and Boff layout on a particular ship hull would bring much more variety, obviously with some balance mechanic in place to stop players taking advantage.

Ships are getting better though. The console slots are still set in stone but we are seeing uni Boff stations more often these days which gives some variety.

Deffo, but more needs to be done. its just that if sort of thing was to happen i believe more players would come back to the game, and people would stick around for longer, and it would give the game a whole new edge and make it more fun and exciting,

It would be nice. That way you come in with an Ody, and suddenly you have 5 tac, 3 engineering and 2 science or any sort of config and now guy has no clue.

I'd be all for it, breaks away from cookie cutter molds.

Verry good point indeed as we discussed this before I think we should do it that way but make an diference between ships, like a dreadnaught should have more than a cruiser and a cruiser should have more then a destroyer ....

Dreadnaught has a stack of 15 slots
Cruisers has a stack of 12 slots
Destroyers have a stack of 10 slots

Something like this and your own choice where to put what like you said
