Good evening all:

I am new to the game and have amassed level 30 due the playing a tone of pve and several assignment I've received from other sources.

I have to admit I'm clueless about fleet marks, credits, etc. I have little clue how to get to the alliance holdings (which, again I have little experience to deal with, when I was level 15 I accepted an invite to join an allice however don't know how to leave either) but unsure what to do when I get there. Is this conversion from energy credits? If not, what do I submit?

I know I have to use fleet marks for new ships, etc, but I have no clue how to look to see my amounts, etc.

I know it's a long post but I dont know where to start and truly need help. I looked in the beginner guide and it gave me little direction as to fleet marks/credit and their usage.

Thanks again.

Thank you for all the help, I have to muttle through this as best I can, but seems the complexity is not something you just adapt to in 4 months. Just hit lvl 40 today and feel ridiculous I don't know more...plasma vs beam, one projectile over ther other, etc. fricking learning curve.

I welcome all advice as well as a mentor. :)

Thank you very much for the offer, and I will definitely pick your brain..I do appreciate it.

I've seen folks running around with Borg gear, is that recovered or bought?

Also, I've looked at this fleet stuff, I'm screwed and just dont get it. Where to see amounts I have, purposes, how energy credits work, etc. I've seen ships a few days ago go for Z, now for some blue note, is that typical?

    Thank you again folks.

To see what you have for fleet marks/credits, just open your inventory and there is a second tab at the top. On that second tab's page, you'll find your energy credits, fleet marks, fleet credits, dilithium, etc..

You earn fleet credits by contributing to the fleet's holdings' projects. When you're on the fleet page (button under the mini-map, or the default hotkey is 'cntrl-G', there is a tab call holdings (-> contribute).

on the roster page, you can leave. Hope that helps :)

Borg gear is bought through the Omega Rep.

As for fleet stuff, for most stuff, you'll have to run Fleet Alert about 22 times for each. (50K FC)

I've played this game now for 2 years, and you slowly learn the ropes. The wiki is good although lacking in info. These forums are a better source of info.

Thank you BOTH for all the help.

I will try to take a look at the fleet marks info you recommended today. When I first started, I believe lvl10, I got an invite to join a "clan", and was unsure just what that was...no I have no clue how to drop out. I admit, I am lost, particularly if I have a give donations to an fleet I'm not married to. Also, does a fleet take enery credits? I have a buttload and from what I can see all I can spend it on is weapons at earth space dock that are underpowered when comparison them to the Sovereign.

what is a Omega Rep? Where are they located, and what funds do I need to spend there to get better armorments?

Are there better arms out there (considering the virtually stock equipment I have now) that I should look at, and where?

Again, thank you and I love the help you've given.

You can drop the fleet easily and just join another one. Fleet credits stay with you.

It's a good thing Cryptic revamped the currency system, to reduce the amount of currencies players have to deal with. /sarcasm (hint: they have introduced around 5 or 6 new ones since then)

You can get better weapons as random drops while playing, or from the exchange terminals in most hubs, in exchange for energy credits.

Omega rep is under the reputation tab of your status screen (default: U, then rightmost tab). You need Omega marks for that, which you get by playing STF missions, found in the PvE Queue window (one of the buttons under your minimap). The different reputations require different marks, acquired through different missions in that queue window.

    Good luck :)

    Thanks Twam,

Can you help me with a few terms? What is deboff and stf?

Also, can someone explain to me what the best places to go for experience, marks, etc (guessing marks can be obtained through those means)? I have been fighting @ starbase 24 the whole duration of my activity, however if a few folks can lead me to a better, more lucrative location I am all ears.

Thank all you again, I'm thick-headed but I try. :-)

Hello, another question...I understand the damage points that can be taken during an attack, however is there some weapons better than other, ie-plasma vs beam vs other, differences in power with different kinds of torpedoes, etc.

    Thanks for the help, again.

If you go into the fleet screen by clicking the mini map, then go to the roster page and click leave fleet

I'm guessing that is debuff - to apply negative effects to an enemy. You could think of the hit to damage resistance that Attack Pattern Beta gives, the debuff to movement of Eject Warp Plasma or the various negative side-effects of the different weapon types (see below).

STF is Special Task Force, and those are the 8 Borg missions in the public queue, 4 space and 4 ground. Infected, Cure, Kithomer and The Hive. These give decent loot drops and Omega Marks.

In that same queue interface (PvE button under the minimap), you'll find lots of different repeatable missions, each awarding a different type of Marks (which marks you get is listed in the interface).

For experience, your best bet is to do the Mirror Invasion, when that is available (it is only available during the 1 hour Mirror Incursion Event, press J to see which event is up and which are coming. However, Starbase 24 is actually a very decent substitute for experience, though regular storyline missions also give large amounts of experience.

Ship weapons, there is a difference between a weapon type (beam, cannon, dual cannon, turret, torpedo, mine) and damage type (plasma, disruptor, phaser, tetryon, polaron, antiproton, physical). A weapon will BE one weapon type and DEAL an energy type. Physical damage is mostly reserved for torpedoes and mines (and some sci skills).

    - The base damage differs according to weapon type, so Dual (Heavy) Cannons do more damage per shot, but have a much smaller arc of fire, to compensate, while turrets do little damage but can fire in all directions.

    - Base damage is equal within the various weapon types, for energy weapons. The difference for those is only in the side-effects they can have (the proc). For instance, plasma can cause additional burning damage, while disruptors can debuff your enemy's hull resistance to damage. See here for details.

    - Torpedoes/mines are a different can of worms. They do physical damage, which is greatly reduced by enemy shields (meaning you'll want to take down their shields fast, if using torpedo's/mines). Their damage varies per weapon type, but so do the secondary effects and the recharge time. The more powerful ones have a longer recharge, so you can't fire them quite as often. See the link above for the 'proc' effects.

Does that help, at all, or did I just confuse you more with my big wall o' text? :p

To clarify what the guy before me said:

Torpedoes, Mines, and many Science powers deal "Kinetic" damage. This is an important distinction because I think there is one actual "physical" space damage...

Kinetic damage only does like 25% of it's listed number to shields, but full damage to "bare hull" or a spot without shields. Therefore, your goal with, say, torpedoes is to time the shot to hit once a shield is gone but before it comes back up.

To add to the confusion "some" while getting you ready for later - once you hit L40 or L50 and get your "endgame" ship, you're gonna want to pick one weapon type (plasma, polaron, disruptor, whatever) and equip your ship with "matching" weapons - so that you can focus on the tactical consoles that match that damage type (so if you go all, say, disruptor, you'll stock up on disruptor booster consoles).

It doesn't help that STO levels you up (in many people's opinion) way too fast the first time through. Game doesn't do much to teach you what you need to know and give you opportunities to practice your skills...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Sorry, been really busy at work, so I'm not around all the time :)

Weapons, it depends on what you're trying to do.

Rule of thumb: the smaller the arc of fire that a weapon has, the higher turn rate you need to make it work. I don't use Dual (Heavy) Cannons on any ship with a base turn rate of less than 12. On the other hand, the weapons with smaller arcs of fire also do more damage per hit.

Some of the slow turning ships, I use regular Beam Arrays. I also have agile, nimble ships that use 1 Dual Beam Bank (for Beam Overload 3), 2 Dual Heavy Cannons (DHC's) and 1 Quantum torpedo (for Torpedo High Yield 3), trying to get as much damage in a short time-frame. It really depends on what you're trying to do with your build...

Traditionally, though, you'd say cruisers go well with single beam arrays, escorts/raptors/birds of prey go well with DHC's, possibly with 1 torpedo launcher. Science vessels you see with all kinds of setups.

Energy types, though, I personally prefer disruptor weaponry, as it has a good extra effect (hull weakening that'll benefit your entire team). But basically, all are perfectly fine, each with their own advantages.

thanks again, I didnt mean specifically only you could respond, but beleive me I need the help.

thanks for the lift, another queation please.

I hit 50 today and first bought an Avenger, then a Odyssey. I made sure I had enough slots prior to purchase. the avenger transaction went off without a hitch, as usual, however I bought the O and it didnt show up on ship availability. the funds show withdrawn, the slots are there, I just cant think why its playing games on me instead of vice versa. I do have probably 6 other ships, however I do have the slots. is there a second page icon or somethung else I missed?

again, my side of the transaction went ok, but I didnt get anything in return...glad I waited on the tactical sscort and long range science.

    thanks you all...

I haven't actually gotten the Oddy myself, but it might be that it'll come in a box that you'll have to open first. So check your inventory for that :)

Also: if you bought it from the store window, you might need to go to a shipyard (on one of the major starbases) and requisition the ship there, at the Ship and Shuttle Requisitions officer. You won't need to pay again, you can just claim the ship - it'll say buy, but it'll cost 0 zen.

I will check again, but I bought it from the ship requisition place in earth spacedock so youd figure it would be there. I tried to check it out a few moments ago and it said "zero" owed as if I bought it. thing is the money to buy the ship (zen) was processed out of my account.

I am so confused its ridiculous.

    Help!!!

If it's listed as zero cost you can just claim it again, try that if it isn't in your inventory... Alternatively, try the ship selector - it might've worked, but not have made it your current ship.

The Oddy is one of the few ships from the Z-store that comes in a box when you still have open ship slots on your roster. The reason is because it has a 3-pack version that gives you all 3 variants when you buy it. This rings true for ALL ships that have a 3-pack purchase option. You'll have to open your inventory (normal key 'i') and then open the box for the ship.

Same is true if you buy it from the shipyard as well.

As a bit of advice, take some time and familiarize yourself with the various screens that can open up, including the tabs at the top and/or the sides.

It should actually look like a box - and going by the box the Vesta came in it'll be very recognisable as such. Description will say something like "Special Requisition Box - Oddysee Cruiser" or something like that. Just double-click to unpack.

76th Fleet is currently progressing towards a T5 shipyard.

However, you only need a T4 yard to get the Fleet Tac Escort. I have one sitting in my ship list and a few builds for it on our fleets website.

Email me in-game and I'll invite you to our Fleet. @risingstar2009

    Or

I am willing to help walk you through any mission/build concept/skill spec/or anything game related you may need, as is most of the Fleet.

Trying to contact me via chat is a bit annoying since you don't know any of my character names, and I have about 8 characters (most are level 50).
