The Many (Dead) Faces of the U.S.S. Renown

The U.S.S. Renown (NCC-96047), originally a Typhoon class in the old tutorial, was replaced by a Regent in Season 8. With the addition of this new ship, a very confusing continuity glitch was made.

If you didn't know, in the FED tutorial the Renown (commanded by Captain Vo'Lok) saves you from a Klingon Negh'var, escorts you to the Pollux system to be greeted by the Borg for the first time. It defends the system while you, the player, go off and save the Vega colony. The ship finally reappears with a small fleet and helps you destroy a Borg cube, and you all go your separate ways.

When Worf's VO was fully implemented, I decided to roll a Lethean and play the campaigns again. On the KDF side when you first meet the Renown, commanded by another Vulcan captain (strangely enough), you promptly blow it up. Yikes, Vo'lok must me mad. But, it's far from over.

Then bam! A story arc later, in "Second Star to the Right", there, behold! It's the Renown. It's destroyed yet again. It appears again in Skirmish, Boldly They Rode, the Kahless Expanse, and even in a Fleet Alert. This is a bug in the random name generator, as it spawns in most FED NPC groups, as an ally and an enemy.

That, or the Renown has been split apart throughout our character's timelines. Somehow, in all my years playing STO, this is the one bug that annoys me to no end.

Cryptic is sloppy. Breaking News at 11. This is what happens when there is no outline or plan and you just make up **** as you go along.

A friend and I were doing the Pi Canis sorties earlier today and blew up the Renown at least four times :D

Renown's been respawning and poking around where Klingons can blow it up before Season 8. My earliest screenshot of blowing up a random-encounter Renown on Holodeck was Oct 28.

    This, basically.

The sad thing is that if you go for the details nothing in STO really makes sense or feels thought out, aside from the major TRIBBLE ups that the game's own lore contradicts itself a couple of times.

Such things only play a minor role in STO. You are here to shoot stuff, not to think.

The Renown is the Kenny of STO, every time one gets blown up the warpcore of another Renown comes to life in drydock.

On a slightly more serious note: there are so many names of historical people cities and ships to pick from Cryptic has an entire generator full of them for the player...don't they use that thing themselves?

Evidentially the name Renown is so Renown in Starfleet they feel the need to use it more than once.

Honestly though I've always assumed those ship names were randomly plucked out of a list rather than actually be scripted in (in most cases), just goes to show how much attention I pay to details.

    :)

This is exactly what I thought. It's just a simple random name generator bug, but I don't want to speculate, it could be much much more.

Pretty much this. Some at Cryptic either really adores the name Renown or has a serious lack of creativity.

I'm saying this because I've encountered and blown up many more U.S.S. Renowns than you mentioned OP. In the Klingon cluster explorations, when you happen to deal with Starfleet there's 50% chance that the capital ship will be U.S.S. Renown.
And if you do the Kahless Expanse defence daily, every second capital ship you encounter is U.S.S. Renown.

From time to time, an update to the game causes this bug. There were a few months where EVERY map in the Pi Canis sorties spawned at least one copy of the U.S.S. KIRK.

Well, truth be told, she never lasts in front of my cannons long enough for me to see the registry number...:P
But it's always a captial ship of the Typhoon class or now changed to the Regent class.

I was thinking of a line from one of the TOS movies where the Klingon Chancellor(?) says "There can be no peace while Kirk lives" or something to that effect. :P

Pretty sure it's a part of the Federation battleship spawn tables. I've seen it pop up during Empire Defense for the Typoon/Armitage/Battleship encounters. No clue if its intentional or not.

Put simply it's like Clara from Doctor who "aka" the impossible Girl. It shows up each and every episode but you have no idea why. :P

Ahem. The U.S.S. Renown is a special class of decoy ship to make foreign powers think it is a command vessel.

In a recent KDF base defense, not only did the Renown show up each wave. But Two came in with the siege group.

Almost. The RRW Temer took one out in the way I have grown accustomed.
Battle your way in close to the enemies tearing down their shields, then as the siege ship hits you with a torpedo salvo, have your enemies light the way to Stovokor by sending them ahead with your detonating singularity core.

(Yes I am a Romulan/KDF. Well one of me.)

I thought it was the opposite of the enterprise or something. Every time the Enterprise gets blown up, they make a new one and put the best and brightest aboard. Every time the Renown gets blown up, the latest crop of failures gets put aboard on a suicide mission to map anomalies in klingon space.

I have a tick scratched into the bulkhead in my briefing room where I keep track of how many times I have destroyed the Renown...

I think I can go 5 or 6 more times before I break the inner hull.

Vo'lok only has to wait 15 seconds for the respawn timer. Its probably taking you longer than that to transfer between maps. :D
